Raw Story | Protesters storm big bankers meet, chant ‘we’ll be back’ as police escort them out
Besieged by activists from the Service Employees International Union, the AFL-CIO and Americans for Financial Reform, the leaders of America's financial sector were interrupted Sunday night as a throng of protesters poured into the conference area and began to chant.
The meeting, scheduled to continue through Tuesday, will feature "[exceptional] speakers like FDIC Chairman Sheila Bair, Comptroller of the Currency John Dugan, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, and political commentator George Will," the ABA's site announced.
"All we wanted to do was deliver a letter to the Wall Street bankers to let them know how much they've hurt our communities - and what they need to do to clean up their act," the SEIU's blog declared. "They wouldn't listen to us. They kicked us out. But, the bad news for them is that we'll be back. We're not going to leave after tonight. In fact, more and more people are coming to Chicago in the next 48 hours. What started as a thousand people tonight will continue to grow up until Tuesday when more than 5,000 taxpayers march on the ABA and demand an end to Wall Street greed." (FULL STORY)

UPI | A stretch of Interstate 40 in North Carolina could be blocked for months after it was buried by a rock slide Sunday
The state Transportation Department said the massive slide occurred about 2 a.m. EDT in a steep gorge west of Asheville in the western portion of the state, The Charlotte Observer reported. No one was hurt by the slide, which initially was estimated to be 50 feet deep and 100 feet long, a DOT spokesman said.
The blockage means anyone traveling between North Carolina and Tennessee on I-40 will have to take a detour.
Officials were developing a strategy for removing rocks and dirt. They said it was too soon to predict when the highway would reopen, the newspaper said.
Twelve years ago, a rock slide not far from the site of Sunday's slide closed the interstate for three months.
2Point6Billion.com | Russia, India to Ditch U.S. Dollar and Return to Rupee/Rouble Trade within 5 years
Indo-Russian trade was based on rupee-rouble transactions during the Soviet era, which led to India emerging as the biggest trade partner of the former USSR in the developing world. Bilateral trade between India and the former USSR was US$5 billion in 1991.
Current bilateral trade is around US$7 billion, although this is in what is now a smaller market. Nonetheless, the feeling is that U.S. dollar denominated bilateral trade has not assisted with any major developments in cross-border economics and is now becoming an unnecessary liability.
The Bank of Russia, the countries Central Bank stated: “The Central Banks of the two countries have agreed to hold consultations to study the possibility of using national currencies transactions in foreign economic operations between Russia and India.” According to the Bank of Russia, both sides discussed the issue at the 15th session of Indo-Russian working group on banking and financial matters in Hyderabad earlier this month.....FULL STORY
AFP | China's second-highest ranking officer kicked off a week-long visit to the United States on Saturday October 24th
US Defense Secretary Robert Gates (L) meets with Chinese Central Military Commission Vice Chairman General Xu CaihouWashington has expressed concern at China's military build-up and modernization, pressing for more transparency from the Asian giant on its intentions amid double-digit increases in Beijing's armed forces budget.
The Pentagon chief said last month that China's increasingly advanced weaponry could undermine US military power in the Pacific, as American aircraft carriers and short-range fighter jets faced potential threats from missiles and anti-ship and anti-satellite systems.
China has boosted its conventional missile capabilities to such an extent that an attack involving Chinese short-range ballistic missiles "could cut every runway at Taiwan's fighter bases and destroy any aircraft parked in the open," a RAND Corporation report concluded in August. FULL STORY
UPI | Stolen car plates (police, firefighters, emergency responders, Homeland Security) trigger terrorism alert
ALBANY, N.Y., Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Thefts of license plates from official security vehicles in Albany, N.Y., have prompted a terrorism alert, a trade publication says.
CrossFire, an industry publication for police, firefighters and other emergency responders, reported there have been "numerous" cases of stolen plates. Unnamed sources told Sunday's New York Post that plates were stolen from state Homeland Security cars in Albany about six weeks ago, and that thieves took the plates from two Bethlehem, N.Y., Police Department vehicles in late August.
The trade journal said the thefts have triggered official notifications to the New York Police Department and state and federal agencies to watch for drivers attempting to get past security checkpoints without proper ID.
The Post said Crossfire speculated the license plates could be useful to terrorists "trying to monitor response activities or to perpetrate a secondary attack with additional explosives."

RIAN.ru | Meteorite falls in northern Latvia, no one injured - local media
RIGA, October 26 (RIA Novosti) - No one was injured after a meteorite fell near a small town in northern Latvia on Sunday, local Latvian media reported.
According to media reports, the meteorite fell near a residential house on the outskirts of Mazsalaca town in the Valmiera district of Latvia, leaving a crater of some 20 meters (66 feet) in diameter and 10 meters (33 feet) deep.
A spokesperson for the Latvian State Fire and Rescue Service said that rescuers and soldiers immediately cordoned off the territory, however, it is still not clear whether it was an asteroid or a space satellite.
"The territory has been immediately cordoned off as we still do not know what fell down from the sky. According to preliminary information, it was a meteorite. However, it is possible that it was a [space] satellite or its fragment. A radioactive contamination is also possible," she said.
A witness, who saw the object falling from the sky and leaving a burning trace behind, said it was making a noise similar to the one of an aircraft flying at a low altitude.
On March 2 this year, a 35-meter asteroid came within 72,000 kilometers of Earth. The size of the space rock was comparable to the asteroid that caused the Tunguska disaster, but there was no danger of a collision.
On June 30, 1908, an explosion equivalent to between 5 and 30 megatons of TNT occurred near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in a remote region of Russia's Siberia.
The Tunguska blast flattened 80 million trees, destroying an area of around 2,150 sq km (830 sq miles).
It is assumed that a huge meteorite had hit the area, although research expeditions failed to find an obvious crater.

Wall Street Journal | Fall in Yuan Worries China's Rivals: Currency slides along with dollar, pressuring Asian exporters like Malaysia and South Korea
HONG KONG - October 26, 2009 - As the dollar continues to weaken, concerns are mounting in much of Asia over another descending currency: the Chinese yuan.
For more than a year, China has kept the yuan largely unchanged against the dollar. So like the dollar, the yuan has been falling steadily against the currencies of China's neighbors, including the Malaysian ringgit, the Indonesian rupiah and the South Korean won. That makes goods produced in those countries more expensive compared with China's.

RIAN.ru | Joint US-Georgia military exercises to begin on Monday
The US embassy on Friday said the exercises would begin on October 24.
"The program is specifically designed to enhance Georgia's ability to conduct joint counterinsurgency operations in Afghanistan together with US forces," the embassy statement said on Friday.
The two-week joint military exercise, code-named Immediate Response, will be held in Georgia and will include training in counterterrorist operations. US military instructors have already arrived at the Krtsanisi training center.
"We commend Georgia for its voluntary contribution of forces to the critical mission in Afghanistan," the US embassy said.
The Georgian Parliament in August approved President Mikheil Saakashvili's initiative to deploy one marine company and one marine battalion to Afghanistan to help in the peacekeeping mission. According to Georgia's Defense Ministry, the company will be commanded by US forces and the battalion by French forces in Afghanistan.
Georgia with US support has requested to become a NATO member, but at the NATO summit in April 2008, members refused to admit the post-Soviet country into the Membership Action Plan (MAP), a key step for membership.
Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Nalbandov said on Thursday that the country's Annual National Program is a copy of MAP, and may suffice for membership.
Georgian state minister on reintegration, Temur Yakobashvili, told reporters that the "instrument we have is a mirror copy of MAP, so if we are discussing implementing criteria, we have the opportunity, in the framework of this document, to fulfill all commitments, which will make us closer to NATO."
"The rest is just a political decision to be made by NATO member countries," he said.

Jerusalem Post | Mashaal: Fate of Jerusalem will be determined by confrontation, not talks
October 25, 2009 - Following a day of clashes between security forces and Arab rioters in Jerusalem, Damascus-based Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal on Sunday evening stated that the fate of the capital would be determined by force, not negotiations.
"The fate of Jerusalem will be determined only by confrontation and not by the negotiating tables," Mashaal said in a speech, according to Channel 10.
"The Israelis want to divide al-Aqsa Mosque, and this is not all. They want to hold their religious ceremonies in the mosque … in preparation for demolishing it and building their temple there," he reportedly said.
Israel is interested in determining the Jerusalem issue unilaterally so that the issue is not included in negotiations with the Palestinians, Masha'al claimed. FULL STORY

KFSM.com | Controversial study suggests vast magma pool under Washington state
The study, published Sunday in the magazine Nature Geoscience, concluded that the magma pool among the three mountains could be the "most widespread magma-bearing area of continental crust discovered so far."
Other scientists dismiss the existence of an underground vat of magma covering potentially hundreds of square miles as "farfetched" and "highly unlikely." Rather than magma heated to 1,300 to 1,400 degrees, some think it could be water.
They also discount speculation that a so-called "super volcano" such as the one under the Yellowstone National Park area might be beneath the region. They say there's no credible evidence to suggest a need to overhaul the volcanic hazard assessments for the three mountains.
Even so, the study is another piece of the puzzle as scientists try to understand the deep plumbing of volcanoes and, perhaps eventually, learn how to predict their eruptions better. FULL STORY

More Republican Deception
As my husband is fond of saying, we have Socialist Party A and Socialist Party B, there is little difference. It seems quite obvious to even the least politically involved that both parties are melding into one and both are far too liberal for the conservative, small government voters who favor our founding fathers’ beliefs and desires for America. In 1965, I remember a close friend telling me that the Soviet Union and America would meld into one combining both communism and capitalism. I’ve thought of that statement many times over the years........
