Magnetosphere Update - Saturday MAY 12, 2012

The Japanese magnetosphere website has temporarily ceased updating since Monday April 2, 2012 to "develop more accurate and practical space environment models and will resume the real-time simulation in the near future" (http://swc.nict.go.jp/contents/rt_simulation_e.html)

High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program(HAARP)

The High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) is an ionospheric research program jointly funded by the US Air Force, the US Navy, the University of Alaska and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
Geomagnetic storminess is usually indicated in oscillatory variations in the earth's magnetic field. Additional detail concerning the nature and severity of the ionospheric disturbance can be found through analysis of the three components of the field. Data from a chain of magnetometers are also available.

A magnetosphere is formed when a stream of charged particles, such as the solar wind, interacts with and is deflected by the intrinsic magnetic field of a planet or similar body. Earth is surrounded by a magnetosphere, as are the other planets with intrinsic magnetic fields: Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn…

Swedish Institute of Space Physics

The Kiruna magnetogram provides realtime data of the local Earth magnetic field at ground level. Strong deviations in the data, primarily the black line could signal the development of geomagnetic activity. The curves on this plot show deflections from an average. The average is derived from the monthly means of the five most quiet days.

Duchsinse | 5/9/2012 -- Weather overview = clear over 3/4 of USA -- Severe over 1/4

website post with the creepy PBS ray bradbury movie here:http://sincedutch.wordpress.com/2012/05/09/592012-weather-overview-clear-over...
It sure seems like a VERY long time since we saw this large of a clear area --- no severe weather in most of the lower 48!!!
Im reminded of this old PBS short movie called "All summer in a day" .. original book by Ray Bradbury ... where it rains all the time ... kids have never seen the sun ... and the sun only comes out once every so many years... then in one day.. the sun comes out... (depressing warning.. this story is kind of sad actually .. movie linked below)..
part1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QWmahMdeGU
part2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DI8A1LOLdkA
part3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQfWno_DuB0
Its time to take a deep breath and finally relax for a day --- here in St. Louis Missouri... mid 70 degrees Fahrenheit w/ "little fluffy clouds" ..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHixChYgGRI
In South Texas and South Arizona -- we see hail detected along with a few strong cell thunderstorms ..... as well as on the far east coast (at the Georgia / South Carolina border also Florida) .. extending up the east coast to New York in non-severe cells --- eventually heading out east off shore.
The west coast low pressure system pulled north into Canada / British Columbia --- will eventually come down to the southeast over the next day or two.
In the Southwest Arizona / New Mexico ... the mini-low pressure system will most likely come back ENE over mexico / AZ / NM / TX and possibly into OK. Hail and Damaging winds (possible tornadoes) as it heads ENE.
Use the links at the site below to monitor severe weather or the possible outbreak over the next two days -- also just to see the beauty of a clear map for once!

SolarHam.com | Sunspot 1476 produced a M4.7 Solar Flare peaking at 12:21 UTC (5-9-12)

Solar activity is currently moderate with two M-Class flares within the past 24 hours. The largest of these events was an M4.7 at 12:32 UTC Wednesday morning around Sunspot 1476. This region has a Beta-Gamma-Delta magnetic configuration and could produce an X-Class event. New Sunspot 1477 rotated into view off the southeast limb. This looks to be the return of old Sunspot 1462.

Another Solar Flare: A second moderate solar flare was just detected at 14:09 UTC. This one was smaller than the initial flare and measured M1.8 at its peak.
