Magnetosphere Update - Saturday AUGUST 18, 2012 at 5PM CT

High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP)

The High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) is an ionospheric research program jointly funded by the US Air Force, the US Navy, the University of Alaska and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
Geomagnetic storminess is usually indicated in oscillatory variations in the earth's magnetic field. Additional detail concerning the nature and severity of the ionospheric disturbance can be found through analysis of the three components of the field. Data from a chain of magnetometers are also available.

Magnetosphere - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetosphere
A magnetosphere is formed when a stream of charged particles, such as the solar wind, interacts with and is deflected by the intrinsic magnetic field of a planet or similar body. Earth is surrounded by a magnetosphere, as are the other planets with intrinsic magnetic fields: Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn…

The Kiruna magnetogram provides realtime data of the local Earth magnetic field at ground level. Strong deviations in the data, primarily the black line could signal the development of geomagnetic activity. The curves on this plot show deflections from an average. The average is derived from the monthly means of the five most quiet days.

SolarHam.com | PHOTO magnetic loop structures (8/15/12)

Solar activity is now at very low levels. The Solar X-Rays appear to be stuck in B-Class territory. There will remain a chance for C-Class flares around Sunspot 1543.

Solar output in the form of solar flares may be low, however there are still plenty of things to look at today. These nice loop structures were captured today by SDO in the image below.

Two partial halo and slow moving Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) were observed by STEREO Ahead COR2 today (Aug 14, 2012) and each may impact our planet by August 17. Minor Geomagnetic Storming at very high latitudes will be possible on that day. Attached video by STEREO Ahead COR2. SolarHam.com | ONE FULL YEAR with an official visible Sunspot counted on each day - August 14, 2012

One Full Year
Today, August 14, 2012 is significant as it marks 1 full year with an official visible Sunspot counted on each and every day. The current streak started on August 15, 2011. There were a few moments where the Sun nearly went spotless, only to rebound with new sunspots. The current Solar Cycle 24 remains weak in comparison to previous cycles in decades past. Here is the latest Sunspot number progression chart as we slowly make our way to expected Solar Max next year.

SolarHam.com | Sunspot Update - Tuesday AUGUST 14, 2012 at 8:45 AM CT

Solar activity is currently very low, with the exception of a couple of C-Class flares around Sunspot 1543 in the northern hemisphere. Regions 1542 and 1543 are the only visible spots remaining on the Earth facing side of the Sun. All other regions have decayed to spotless plagues.

SUBSIDING METEOR SHOWER: After two days of strong activity, the Perseid meteor shower is finally subsiding. For much of August 12-13, meteor rates exceeded 100 per hour. Now, according to worldwide observers, activity is only half that and continues to drop. http://www.spaceweather.com
