A magnetosphere is formed when a stream of charged particles, such as the solar wind, interacts with and is deflected by the intrinsic magnetic field of a planet or similar body. The Kiruna magnetogram provides realtime data of the local Earth magnetic field at ground level. Strong deviations in the data, primarily the black line could signal the development of geomagnetic activity. The curves on this plot show deflections from an average. Here is a short clip I put together using the new format option by STEREO Ahead COR2 images. CME produced by an eruption around Sunspot 1399 is more clearly defined. It appears to have a somewhat Earthward component.

A minor eruption above Sunspot 1399 produced a small Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) on Jan 18, 2012. This video shows an image by SDO, Movie by GOES-15 Solar X-Ray imager and the CME captured by STEREO Ahead COR. The CME is rather faint in the new Lasco images. It looks to be directed mostly to the south.

Here is an impressive video by SDO of a very long duration C6.4 event above Sunspot 1402 during the early hours of Jan 16, 2012. This event produced a non Earth directed CME and lasted several hours. It almost looks like the Aurora is appearing above the Sun in this video.
