BeachConnection.net | Enormous Waves, Tornado, Rattle Oregon Coast

Winds howl in Lincoln City, Oregon as the sheriff's office photographs tornado damage.

(Oregon Coast) November 7, 2009 – It's been a little of everything on the beaches of Oregon when it comes to crazed weather. Massive foam inundated Depoe Bay, inclement weather caused several rescues, and a tornado even cut a swath through the central coast last night.

Monstrous waves have been reported and documented along the Oregon coast the last two days, including a rather bizarre video of a woman who defied all wisdom and common sense and was nearly swept away or killed on several occasions by wandering a stormy beach.

The storm also caused the closure of coastal bays like Nehalem, Tillamook and Yaquina. The Coast Guard responded to more than one rescue on unruly seas, including a group that was stuck on a floating refueling platform on Tillamook Bay.

The most dramatic incident came from a tornado that shot through Lincoln City late Friday, but that wasn’t the only weather event.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's office said a large thunderstorm hit the area, including a lightning strike on the Alsea Bay Bridge about 10:13 p.m. It damaged a light pole and sprayed debris onto the roadway. Some flooding in Waldport was also reported due to heavy rains. Earlier in the evening, Lincoln City was hit with a small tornado.

“At about 9:54 p.m., residents of the Roads End residential area, just north of Lincoln City, near the Chinook Winds Casino, reported seeing a large waterspout tornado move onshore and through a section of the community,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release. Lincoln County deputies, Lincoln City Police Department officers, and members of the North Lincoln Fire Department responded to calls of damage in the area. Deputies reported a damage path, about two blocks wide, leading from the beach and stretching about three blocks to the east.

20 to 30 homes were damaged, as were several vehicles in the area. The damage mainly consisted of broken windows and downed trees, but one of the homes in the 7400 block of Logan Road suffered extensive damage. Emergency responders checked the area and reported that no one was injured. Many of the damaged homes were vacant at the time the tornado stuck. The Lincoln County Sheriffs said most of the home owners have been notified of the damage as of Friday night. “Power in the area was knocked out by the tornado and utility crews are working to restore services,” the sheriff's office said.

The National Weather Service was contacted and it reported that meteorological data supported the existence of a tornado, but that the classification could not be determined until the damage is examined in daylight.

Manzanita reported major winds, rain and surf this week.

Meanwhile, high winds and monstrous surf had also been an issue.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a surf warning for the Oregon coast on Friday, meaning conditions would be dangerous for the beaches. High winds started on Thursday and continued through the early morning on parts of the coast, culminating in reports of gusts as high as 90 mph on Mt. Hebo in Tillamook County, and gusts in the 60-mph range in many other parts of the coast.

The NWS said swells of more than 27 feet had been reported, although other entities on the coast have reported swells of near 50 feet in some places.

Large sneaker waves in Newport

“These waves will be very energetic as they move into the surf zone, pummeling the coast with large breakers as they move onshore,” said the NWS in a bulletin on Friday. “Heavy debris, such as logs, will be thrown around by the large waves, making the surf especially hazardous.”
Massive waves began hitting the central last week, such as here, at the Devil's Punch Bowl (photo BeachConnection.net)

Also in the oceanic drama category, monstrous sea foam hit the central coast earlier this week, although this had been more prevalent on the north coast in the last two weeks.

Depoe Bay resident Angi Wildt photographed the large chunks of brownish foam hitting the bay this week. Friday, she noted the ocean had grown wild and conditions in Depoe Bay were proving dramatic, especially one of the town’s more prominent natural features.

“The spouting horn is going off,” Wildt said.

Science experts say after the storms have subsided is the best time to go beachcombing, as numerous oddities will likely be in abundance.

TampaBay.com | El Niño brings calm hurricane season but potentially hazardous winter

October 27, 2009 - El Niño has brought Floridians a calmer hurricane season, but the winter could be a much different story.

Think downpours, floods and tornadoes.

"We're going to have a very active winter," said Daniel Noah, the warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay.

No hurricanes have threatened Florida this season, which ends Nov. 30. But tornadoes have killed more people in Florida than hurricanes in recent years, so the National Weather Service is trying to get the word out about the flip side of El Niño.

El Niño forms every three to five years as warm surface waters in the Pacific Ocean shift from the west to east. Those warmer waters form upper atmospheric storms that can thwart hurricanes forming in the Atlantic.

But they can also cause havoc during the winter months.

This El Niño started in July and weakened eight hurricanes, Noah said. Now considered a moderate El Niño, it is expected to strengthen in the coming months, producing hazardous weather.

The opposite of El Niño — La Niña — occurs when surface water in the eastern Pacific cool to below average temperatures. That produces warmer winters, drier summers and a more active hurricane season in the Atlantic.

The last El Niño was during 2006 and 2007, and it led to the Christmas Day tornadoes that damaged about 100 homes in Pasco County. FULL STORY

Huliq.com | A freak tornado struck Rome yesterday

Rome was struck by extreme weather conditions which spun off a small tornado at 5 pm yesterday afternoon, causing mayhem with rush hour traffic.

Winds clocked at 90kmh, accompanied by heavy downpours, toppled more than 50 trees, killed one 21 year old, and caused an additional 5 injuries, one of whom remains in critical condition.

Meteorologists say the small tornado struck ground’ just a few miles east of the capital’s ring road, in Via di Lunghezzina.

The gale force winds kicked in at around 5 pm. Approximately 30 major roads had to be closed and bus routes and rail lines were temporarily stopped or re-routed away from the storm.

Due to the severity of the winds and rains, and the time of day, traffic jams wreaked havoc with workers trying to get in and out of the capitol.

Much of the damage, and ensuing mayhem was caused by the falling trees.

Storms of this severity are rare in Rome. The last one that was reported was in April 2009. While residents submitted photos and videos of the hail and purported tornado, the "tornado" was not confirmed by weather services.

Examiner.com | Tornadoes in 2009: Well below average through September

With the El Nino effect expected to increase, the number of tornadoes will probably be a bit above average during the fall, but so far 2009 has shaped up to be a year with 15% fewer than average tornadoes.

In fact, looking at all years from 1954-2007, the year 2009 is just above the 10% line for this point in the season. This means only 5 or 6 years during this period have had equal or lower tornado counts. So far there have been just over 1000 tornadoes reported nationally (adjusted for duplicate reports).

Not a bad thing at all.

UK.Reuters.com | Freak tornado wreaks havoc in Cyprus capital

NICOSIA Fri Sep 18, 2009 (Reuters) - A freak tornado ripped through Cyprus Friday, injuring at least 11 people and wreaking havoc in the capital Nicosia, police said.

The whirlwind accompanied by hammering rain tore off rooftops and uprooted trees which smashed into cars during rush hour traffic.

Parts of the city were blocked by trees, while flying debris smashed shop windows and factory roofs collapsed.

"It was unbelievable, the damage is huge. Thank God we had no victims," said Panayiotis Kyprianou, mayor of the Nicosia suburb of Latsia.

Police said those injured were hit either by flying debris or when trees crashed onto their vehicles. Their condition was not serious.

Extreme weather conditions in Cyprus are very rare.

Possible tornado rips through central Japan, damaging houses and cars, two injured

Sheer winds or a possible tornado ripped through a small town in central Japan, sending debris flying, on Sunday evening, July 19th, according to Japanese media reports.

The incident happened at about 7:20pm in the town of Mimasaka, Okayama prefecture, on the main island of Japan, about 90 miles west of Osaka. Heavy rains and bad weather were reported throughout the region.

Multiple houses were severally damaged, with roofs and walls being torn off. Other objects, such as cars, were damaged by flying debris. One car was found to have been thrown more than 300 feet (100 meters) into a nearby farm field.

No one was seriously hurt, but two elderly women received minor injuries.

Tornadoes are relatively rare in the country which is known to be highly prone to natural disasters, such as earthquakes.

Pataskala, Ohio | Tornado dome offers shelter for mobile home park residents

The cost of inflation is a small price to pay for safety.

With the help of a FEMA grant and matching funds from a local businessman, a tornado dome that can double as a community shelter went up in Pataskala, Ohio.

"Historically we've had some serious tornadoes here in Licking County with our data going back 55, 60 years," said Licking County Environmental Planner Jim Mickey.

"Our goal is to, obviously, to protect the residents here, save lives, reduce injuries in severe weather events, but also use this as an opportunity to educate people how they can better protect their families and their community in severe weather."

One of the greatest dangers in tornadoes is injury from flying debris, which can act like projectiles, penetrating walls.

The dome is 50 feet wide and 18 feet tall, capable of withstanding 250 mile-per-hour winds. The wind-resistant pliable fabric within the dome is reinforced with steel attached to a four-by-six concrete foundation and sealed with polyurethane foam.

"It's kind of a shelter in a full-service building to provide for these people in this modular park, so it's really great, and when severe weather comes, they've got someplace to go," said Licking County's Director of Homeland Security Jeff Walker.

The shelters, which cost about $229,000, are invaluable. Licking County plans to have up to six tornado shelters completed by the end of the year.
