Web Ad Prompts Dozens to Help Colorado Springs Homeless

The growing homeless camp population in Colorado Springs is grabbing the attention of the more fortunate.

Annie Gaffney posted an ad on craigslist.com saying she wanted to spend her birthday collecting and distributing items to homeless camps near downtown.

As Southern Colorado braces for another week with below-freezing overnight temperatures, the hundreds of people living in the so-called 'tent cities' hope they have enough wood and propane to stay warm.

About two dozen people showed up Sunday with supplies to America The Beautiful Park eager to help. "Its heartbreaking to see people struggle," said Gaffney. “I'm just completely in shock with how many people showed up with so much help.”

"I'm really surprised," said Bill, a member of the homeless camp along Fountain Creek. Bill has been homeless since the summer, and he's very thankful for the gifts.

A short drive up the road, 11 News finds a young couple living under the freeway on-ramp. "We're really excited, just the fact of wood made us happy cause it keeps us warm," said Carissa.

"It actually boosts my spirits. It actually shows that people are starting to care more," said Chris.

Support beams are used as food pantries and tarps hang to block the wind in the camp Carissa and Chris set up below the interstate.

"You just gotta do what you gotta do,” said Bill. “Cause if you give up, then you lose."

Every single volunteer hopes the donated supplies will help the homeless stay warm, as the cold night air sets in.

At last Monday’s city council meeting, the Colorado Springs Police Department presented a new ordinance looking to make camping on city property and in city parks illegal. The council said the ordinance did not have sufficient information. After more research is done, the proposal will be brought to the council in February.

Gaffney says she's planning another donation drop off next Sunday. If you’d like more information on how to help her out, you can send an email to annmarie1341@msn.com.

'Obamaville' sign posted near Colorado Springs homeless camp

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Someone has put a lot of thought into a welcome sign that may surprise you, it's in front of a homeless camp off I-25 in Colorado Springs.

Its message, "Welcome to Obamaville, Colorado's fastest growing community." Despite repeated calls no one could answer the question, who put up the sign?

To some homeless the sign's message says enough. Mark Limonez, a homeless man living in "tent city", says the sign doesn't make him feel good about trying to get back on his feet. "Guys are trying to work but there's not enough work out there, so they go pan handling or flag a sign" Limonez says, "I've never seen so many camps since I've been out in the streets - there's no money."

There are no logos on the front of the sign and no clues to where it comes from.

Runaway Box Car Derails In Adams County

Covered Car Filled With Plastic Pellets

3:13 pm MDT October 8, 2009A runaway rail way car headed to the Denver area was stopped when it derailed near 60th Avenue and Federal Boulevard in Adams County Thursday morning.Steve Forsberg, spokesman for Burlington Northern Santa Fe, said the car had been standing still on the track when it rolled uncontrolled down the tracks. It rolled east "several miles" because of the downward slope, Forsberg said. The car stopped at the junction where Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks join Union Pacific tracks.

Forsberg said the car was loaded with condensed plastic pellets, which are not considered hazardous. Some of the pellets spilled when the car tipped over but because the car was covered, not all of the material spilled. The pellets are the raw form of plastic used to make various plastic products, he said.BNSF is investigating what caused the car to roll.No one was injured, no rail traffic was affected and no property was damaged, Forsberg said. The line that the car had been sitting on ends in Golden and is not used heavily.Three counties -- Adams, Denver, and Jefferson Counties -- were all called out to handle the runaway car.It was first reported at about 8:30 a.m.

Real news from Aspen, Colorado would confront the corporate-government media's baloney of green shoots and happy days are just about here again!

I SURE HOPE THAT ASPEN, CO RESIDENTS DO NOT COUNT ON ABC NEWS FOR THEIR ONLY SOURCE FOR NEWS!

Over at ABC News the talking heads are laughing about Aspen, Colorado being overrun by black bears in what they called a "Bear Invasion". Bears seeking alternative sources of food since a wet spring caused a berry shortage.
Officials Tell Colorado Residents to Be "Mean" to the Bears ABC News - September 27, 2009 - 21 hours ago‎. Residents fight back as scarce food causes bears to disrupt community. ""Bears are emblematic of the Aspen community,"," said Aspen resident Mark Goodman. ...
Interesting how even the Wall Street Journal had a story weeks back on September 1st about Aspen, Colorado and the bears:

Colorado Struggles to Run Bears Out of Town Wall Street Journal - Stephanie Simon, Chris Herring - ‎Sep 1, 2009‎

In Aspen, the hardest-hit town, police have received more than 460 calls for help dealing with bears since July 1, including 15 during one 24-hour period ...
ABC News and their on the scene reporters appeared busy collecting all that breaking news out of Aspen, Colorado, a place they described today as the Rodeo Drive of the Rockies. The following actual news from Aspen, Colorado would definitely confront the corporate-government media's baloney of green shoots and happy days are just about here again.
City of Aspen lays off 12, cuts 4 jobs Grand Junction Free Press
ASPEN, Colo. (AP) — The city of Aspen has laid off 12 employees, and it is eliminating four other positions to cope with plunging tax revenue. The cuts Thursday are expected to save $1.36 million.

The city previously cut $2.4 million in its 2009 general fund budget, which included eliminating or freezing 20 positions and laying off nine employees.

In February, the city froze employee salaries and eliminated or reduced some benefits and bonuses to save about $1.4 million. Salaries also are being frozen for 2010.

Through July, sales tax collections were down 18 percent from the same time last year, while lodging taxes were down 27 percent. Building and planning fees were down 46 percent through August compared with last year.

StanDeyo.com | Colorado Earthquake "a Little Scary"

August 17, 2009

By Jessica Fender
The Denver Post

It sounded like thunder or an explosion to Mary Breslin, a retiree who was making dinner at her home in Eads Sunday evening when she felt the rolling tremors.

"It was a little scary. I mean, we went outside to look and see if something really bad had happened," Breslin said. "I really thought it was an explosion. It did not occur to me in the beginning that it was an earthquake."

A quake registering 3.9 on the Richter scale started at 6:22 p.m. just nine miles east of Breslin's small town and was felt as far as Colorado Springs, according to data from the United States Geological Survey.

While the Front Range has a lengthy history of minor earthquakes, Eastern Colorado rarely sees seismic activity from a handful of epicenters in the Arkansas and Platte river valleys, the Survey says.

The most powerful earthquake on record in Colorado happened in 1882 west of Fort Collins and is thought to have registered as a 6.6 on the Richter scale.

Sunday's earthquake was powerful enough for Breslin, who said it shook her home and knocked a picture off the wall at her mother's assisted living facility nearby.

"I heard it first," she said. "It was a pretty loud rumbling noise. Then, just right on the heels of that, there was a rolling and shaking under the house. It started on one end and kept on rolling."
