From a forum - Interesting charts!

YEAR 2006

Lets look at this paired with another piece of data from the Fed. I have shortened the timeframe to focus on the last 5 years as most of the real action in the charts have happened in the last year and a half.

Chart 1: 5 year Monetary Base

Chart 2: Excess reserves of depository institutions

Notice how similar the charts look? Lets see how the actual increase in the monetary base and the "excess reserves" by the banks match up with the actual data...I think you will see something very interesting.

Lets go back in the time machine all the way back to March of 2008 and the collapse of Bear Stearns. That month showed a slightly increased 3.5 billion dollars onto the monetary base. Depository institutions holdings increased by 1.25 billion dollars that month. Interesting since that is the exact amount that JP Morgan paid to acquire Bear.

Now, fast forward to September of 2008. The dreaded month of Lehman and Merrill Lynch dying. That month the first of the big 'injections' occured--the monetary base raising by 60.3 Billion. Guess What? Bank excess deposits went up a corresponding 58.1 billion. Once again, interesting because of the purchases of Lehman and Merrill for a combined 54 billion and change.

But now, we have to get serious. The Fed must print the money to funnel to its owner banks. The presses must go into high gear. There is a crisis.
Look how these compare--the monetary base and excess reserves...printing cash and giving it to the banks:

Oct 08--Monetary Base +225.3 billion, excess reserves +207.8 billion
Nov 08--Monetary Base +309.3 billion, excess reserves +291.1 billion
Dec 08--Monetary Base +224.1 billion, excess reserves +208.4 billion
Jan 09--Monetary Base +48.3 billion, excess reserves +30.8 billion
Feb 09--Monetary base -149.9 billion, excess reserves -154.8 billion
Mar 09--Monetary Base +84.7 billion, excess reserves +81.1 billion
Apr 09--Monetary Base +105.9 billion, excess reserves +99.7 billion
May 09--Monetary Base +22.2 billion, excess reserves +19.7 billion
Jun 09--Monetary Base -90.8 billion, excess reserves -92.7 billion
July 09--Monetary Base -11.4 billion, excess reserve -18.4 billion
Aug 09--Monetary Base +33.1 billion, excess reserves +32.9 billion
Sept 09--Monetary Base +94.9 billion, excess reserves +94.2 billion

Interesting, huh? Seems as though over 95 cents of every dollar that is added to the monetary base ends up in the banks vault at the Fed. THAT is why inflation is not rampant right now. The money is "in the bank".

What is the net of all of that in the last year? The fed has increased the monetary supply by just under 956 billion dollars. Of that, 858 billion is sitting in the banks vaults at the fed. 89.76 cents of every dollar.

What is next? why another credit squeeze of course. We have build up the cash in the vault--now we need to create a crisis so that cash can be put to work buying real assets--homes, factories, etc....for pennies on the dollar.

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) | Quake could pose risk to the main plutonium laboratory at Los Alamos National Laboratory

Published : Tuesday, 27 Oct 2009, 2:45 PM MDT

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - An independent safety oversight board is warning that a major earthquake could cause a catastrophic fire at the main plutonium laboratory at Los Alamos National Laboratory, which could trigger a massive radiation release.

The four-page letter issued Tuesday by the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board urged Energy Secretary Stephen Chu to make changes to reduce potential hazards.

The board is an auditing agency that oversees federal nuclear programs. It typically examines worst-case scenarios involving national nuclear facilities, then makes recommendations to the Department of Energy on how to minimize risks.

Lab officials released a response, citing several actions taken this year to improve fire safety at the plutonium laboratory building known as Technical Area 55.

WiredScience.com | Mantis Shrimp Eyes Might Inspire New High-Def Devices

In the marvelously sensitive eyes of mantis shrimps, scientists have found cells that could inspire an overhaul of humanity’s comparatively clumsy communications hardware.

Mechanical analogs of their eyes “are among the most important and commonly used optical components, and the cellular structure we describe significantly outperforms these current optics,” write researchers in a study published Sunday in Nature Photonics.

Mantis shrimps are reef-dwelling marine crustaceans who trace their evolutionary lineage straight back to the Cambrian age 500 million years ago, before vertebrates had even evolved. They’re so biologically unique that biologists call them “shrimps from Mars.”

They possess the animal kingdom’s most complicated eyes, capable of distinguishing between 100,000 colors — 10 times as many as humans — and seeing circular polarized light, or CPL, which can’t be detected by any other creature.

Petition Forcing 'All' Members of Congress to enroll in any gov't run health plan

HR 615 - Please forward this message to everyone you know.
Not a single American voter can be against this

Subject: HR 615 On Tuesday, the Senate health committee voted 12-11 in favor of a two-page amendment, courtesy of Republican Tom Coburn which would require all Members of Congress and their staff members to enroll in any new government-run health plan.

Congressman John Fleming has proposed an amendment that would require Congressmen and Senators to take the same health care plan that they would force on us. (Under proposed legislation they are exempt.)

Congressman Fleming is encouraging people to go to his Website and sign his petition. The process is very simple. I have done just that at:

http://fleming.house.gov/index.html .

Senator Coburn and Congressman Fleming are both physicians. Regardless of your political beliefs, it sure seems reasonable that Congress should have exactly the same medical coverage that they impose on the rest of us. Please urge as many people as you can to do the same!

Thanks.

From the United Nations Executive Council | A NEW WORLD ORDER - A Role for America

The three-tiered structure of the United Nations Executive Council is well-positioned to take mankind forward into the New Era. Some of the tools needed are outlined in detail in The 7th Sense, which also explains that there is a place for American leadership in the task ahead.

In Barack Obama, the United States now has a leader with a vision and the drive and courage to achieve lofty goals for Americans and the whole of mankind. He has the goodwill of Americans and most people around the world.

Not only can President Obama change America and move us forward into the New Era, he has the unique opportunity to leave his indelible mark on the lives of billions of people around the world by working through, and with, the Executive Council.

As emphasized in The 7th Sense, the Executive Council will not be composed of world “rulers.” Members will be world “leaders” serving mankind. Because a leader serves his people.

This is just one of the many life-changing lessons you will find in The 7th Sense as Rev. Magnus takes you on a journey of spiritual discovery. If you wish to understand your true place in the universe — and want to stop standing on the sidelines and give purpose to your life, just as President Obama has urged by calling on volunteers to step up — then this book is for you.

PajamasMedia.com | Now the UN Wants Us to Fight Terror With Overseas Gender Operations

October 27th, 2009 2:43 pm - It’s bad enough that the War on Terror has been reduced to “Overseas Contingency Operations.” Now the UN has come up with a report urging us to fight terrorists with Overseas Gender Operations.

You can read all about it in this Fox News article on “U.N. Report Demands Repeal of Counter-Terrorism Laws to Promote ‘Gender Equality.’ ” This is yet another product of the same UN Human Rights Council which in April brought us the Durban Review Conference in Geneva (with Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as a star speaker) and recently adopted the Goldstone Report on conflict between Israelis and Hamas in Gaza (with a Human Rights Council resolution slamming Israel and excusing the terrorists of Hamas).

The author of this UN report, Finnish law professor Martin Scheinin, wants counter-terrorism policies replaced with gender-equality policies at all costs, such as loosening terror-financing restrictions to help organizations that promote gender equality. In Afghanistan, he wants an end to force and a new policy responsive to the concerns of “women, gay, bisexual, transsexual and intersex individuals in local contexts.”

With the UN at the center of U.S. foreign policy, we may never defeat Al Qaeda, but we can go forwad with confidence that every effort is being made to ensure the ranks of terrorists worldwide include not only women, but a full complement of every gender permutation dreamt of in Martin Scheinen’s counter-terrorism philosophy. Just another case of your tax dollars, and UN diplomacy, at work.

TrueSlant.com | Goldman Lobbies Senate, Says Full Transparency Sucks

ALTERNATIVE TRADING PLATFORMS AND THEIR EFFECT ON LIQUIDITY

The equity markets provide perhaps the best example of a highly evolved complex ecosystem, where care must be taken to preserve the benefits that have evolved from competition and innovation…

Crucially, liquidity is what helps to solve this mismatch problem. Market makers that see large volumes are best positioned to match differing size transactions. In traditional exchange trading, bids and offers are public, and this transparency helps buyers and sellers to achieve the best price.

For some market participants, however, the openness and transparency of the equity market actually mean they are unlikely to achieve the best price. The risk, particularly for large transactions such as those undertaken by pension funds or large mutual funds (where most small investors have most of their equity exposure), is that other market participants will use this transparency to undercut the intended transactions.

From a Goldman Sachs lobbying document (emphasis mine)

effective-reg-part-4.pdf (application/pdf Object).

This is from a lobbying document Goldman has been passing around the Senate on financial regulatory reform in general.

There is a lot of crazy stuff in this document, but the most notable is probably this passage, in which Goldman pooh-poohs the notion that complete transparency in markets creates accurate prices.

Instead, the bank argues that an over-the-counter market in which big traders like Goldman get to do deals in the shadows in “dark pools” without the retail investor having any knowledge of what the hell is going on is somehow better for everybody, that this somehow produces better prices. Of course the reality is that the two-tiered system creates one pool of fools whose every movement is visible to every animal on the Serengeti, and another pool of giant bloodthirsty carnivores who get to walk around invisible, picking off the dik-diks one by one.

Everyone I showed this to had the same reaction — “I can’t believe they said this out loud.”

One friend of mine put it this way: say Goldman buys a big block of stock from a pension fund in a dark pool. Now they have shares they want to get out of and flatten out their risk. So where do they sell? Well, a big chunk of it might go to the retail schmuck who has no idea what’s going on. He’s buying 1000 shares of whatever at $28, not knowing that Goldman has another 50,000 shares to go. Next thing you know, the schmuck’s shares are at $27.

Goldman salutes this process, noting the magic of so-called “non-displayed liquidity.” What the rest of us would describe as “hiding shit from the rabble,” Goldman calls “separating liquidity from information about the transaction.” You almost have to admire the sheer balls of this sort of propaganda:

Alternative trading platforms – so-called “dark pools” of liquidity – have evolved to address this problem. They work by separating liquidity from information about the transaction – the participants, lot sizes and transaction prices. Through the process of “non-displayed liquidity”, information does become available to both regulators and the public market – but not until the transaction is complete.

God bless this company. They’re never boring, that’s for sure.

WashingtonTimes.com | Obama: $3.4B for 'smart' power grid

Click to view video on news website:

October 27, 2009 - President Obama on Tuesday announced a $3.4 billion federal investment to modernize the country's outdated power grid.

The money will go to 100 projects in 49 states to add automated substations, digital transformers, electric meters in homes and other high-tech equipment to create a "smart" grid.

"We're going to create an energy superhighway," Mr. Obama said when making the announcement at Florida Power & Light Co.'s DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center in Arcadia, Fla., one of the country's biggest solar-power facilities.

Mr. Obama used the nationally televised event to promote climate-change legislation in Congress that would reduce greenhouse gas emissions over time.

"We've heard these arguments before," he said. "People don't like change. They get nervous."

The House has passed the legislation, and the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works began hearings Tuesday morning on its own version.

The money will be released in the form of grants through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and recipients will have to match the federal money with an equal amount of private investment.

Administration officials said that the program includes $4.7 billion in private investments and that grants range from $400,000 to $200 million.

NYMag.com Daily Intell | As Fed President, Tim Geithner Charged $13 Billion of Crappy CDOs to Taxpayer Tab

October 27, 2009 - Last November, in his role as president of the New York Federal Reserve, Tim Geithner personally interceded in negotiations between AIG and banks like Goldman Sachs, Société Générale, and Deutsche Bank, and arranged for said banks to receive in-full payment on the credit default swaps they had purchased rather than the 40 cents on the dollar the struggling insurance company was proposing. Per Bloomberg:

The New York Fed’s decision to pay the banks in full cost AIG — and thus American taxpayers — at least $13 billion. Under the agreement, the government and its taxpayers became owners of the dubious CDOs, whose face value was $62 billion and for which AIG paid the market price of $29.6 billion. The CDOs were shunted into a Fed-run entity called Maiden Lane III. FULL STORY
RELATED:
Collateralized debt obligations (CDOs) are a type of structured asset-backed security (ABS) whose value and payments are derived from a portfolio of fixed-income underlying assets. CDOs securities are split into different risk classes, or tranches, whereby "senior" tranches are considered the safest securities. Interest and principal payments are made in order of seniority, so that junior tranches offer higher coupon payments (and interest rates) or lower prices to compensate for additional default risk.

A few academics, analysts and investors such as Warren Buffett and the IMF's former chief economist Raghuram Rajan warned that CDOs, other ABSs and other derivatives spread risk and uncertainty about the value of the underlying assets more widely, rather than reduce risk through diversification. Following the onset of the 2007-2008 credit crunch, this view has gained substantial credibility. Credit rating agencies failed to adequately account for large risks (like a nationwide collapse of housing values) when rating CDOs and other ABSs.

Many CDOs are valued on a mark to market basis and thus have experienced substantial write-downs on the balance sheet as their market value has collapsed.

A rocket fired from Lebanon hit northern Israel on Tuesday causing no damage or injury, an Israeli police spokesman said

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A rocket fired from Lebanon hit northern Israel on Tuesday causing no damage or injury, an Israeli police spokesman said.
A Lebanese security source confirmed a rocket had been fired from southern Lebanon from the village of Houla, and another Lebanese security source said Israel returned artillery fire at the area.
Micky Rosenfeld, spokesman for Israeli police, said a Katyusha rocket "landed in upper Galilee" after darkness and that there were no reports of damage or injury. An Israeli military spokesman had no immediate comment.
The Israeli-Lebanese border has been largely quiet since a U.N.-brokered truce was reached after a 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas.
But two rockets were fired a month ago after a long lull and a military group with links to al Qaeda claimed responsibility.
There was no immediate claim made for Tuesday's rocket which fell in an area near the northern Israeli border town of Kiryat Shmone, an Israeli security source said.

(IsraelNN.com) Terrorists in southern Lebanon fired a Katyusha rocket on the Upper Galilee around 7 p.m. (1 p.m. EDT). No one was wounded and no damage was reported, but a fire broke out at the site of the explosion. Lebanese sources reported that the IDF retaliated with artillery fire, but Israel has not confirmed the report.
The explosion occurred near Kiryat Shmona, and police and civil defense authorities are searching for the point of impact. Lebanese authorities confirmed that the rocket was fired from a village near the Israeli border.

The rocket may have been fired by a terrorist cell not directly connected with Hizbullah.
Earlier in the day, Defense Minister Ehud Barak visited the area and said, “Quiet has been maintained here for nine years after many years of attacks and the painful five-week period of the Second Lebanon War." Tuesday's attack was at least the ninth since the end of the war in 2006.
United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) forces have been mandated to keep Hizbullah out of southern Lebanon as part of the ceasefire agreement to which Israel agreed to end the Second Lebanon War in August 2006.
Its commanders said at the outset that they would not carry out the mandate to disarm, Hizbullah, which is estimated to have stockpiled between 60,000 and 80,000 rockets since the end of the war, more than three times the amount it possessed before it attacked Israel with more than 1,000 rockets.

IslamOnline.net | Taliban's Strategic Revision: Towards a Pragmatic Policy - Setting up a Realist Regional Agenda

By Suhail Shaheen

Former Chief Editor of the Kabul Times

October 27, 2009 - Despite the Afghani Taliban's fierce resistance against the foreign troops and the government, they have moved onto adopting a more pragmatic approach of good relations towards their regional neighbors. The upcoming run-off elections between incumbent president Karzai and his opponent Dr. Abdullah, have not seemingly affected the movement's view of the US occupation and any US-backed regime.

Our contributor Mr. Suhail Shaheen tracks such a turning point in the strategic outlook of the Taliban that is consciously moving away from Idealism towards a Realist agenda of regional relations.

Mullah Muhammad Omar's last Eid Message, was quite different from his previous messages in content and tone. It indicated a shift in Taliban's general policy and approach towards neighboring countries, the US and Europe.

The Taliban's leader, in his message, assured Afghanistan's neighboring countries that the Taliban will not harm them if they gain political power but rather will develop relations based on mutual cooperation. He said: "The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan wants to maintain good and positive relations with all neighbors based on mutual respect and open a new chapter of good neighborliness of mutual cooperation and development."

In the same tone, he assured China, India and Russia that the Taliban is going to play positive role in establishing peace and stability in the region. He added: “We consider the whole region as a common home against colonialism and want to play our role the peace and stability of the region."

In the same direction on October. 7, the Taliban issued a statement on the eighth anniversary of the American aerial attack on Afghanistan, which further elucidated the Taliban's new policy: "We announce to all, that our aim is obtainment of independence and establishment of an Islamic system. We did not have any intention to harm other countries including Europe nor do we have such an agenda today." FULL STORY

TimesOnline.co.uk | Skull of huge sea monster that could have eaten T. rex found in Dorset

October 27, 2009

Dinosaur experts in Dorset are examining the fossilised skull of a sea monster so large they say it could have eaten a Tyrannosaurus rex for breakfast.

The fossil head is 2.4m (8ft) long, suggesting that the beast measured up to 16m (54ft) from the tip of its massive, crocodile-like snout to the end of its muscular tail, making it one of the largest specimens ever found.

The skull belongs to a pliosaur, one of a group of giant aquatic reptiles which roamed the warm seas over what is now southern Britain 150 million years ago. Full Story

Rian.ru | Russia, India, China set to forge energy ties

BANGALORE (India), October 27 (RIA Novosti) - The foreign ministers of Russia, India and China agreed on Tuesday to enhance energy cooperation.

Russia's Sergei Lavrov, India's S.M. Krishna and China's Yang Jiechi met in the Indian city of Bangalore to discuss energy security, the fight against terrorism and climate change.

"India, Russia and China are seeking to intensify international energy cooperation on a new basis to help make the energy market more open, transparent and competitive and reflect the common interests of all the parties involved," the three diplomats said in a joint declaration.

The ministers recognized Russia as a leading oil and gas supplier for energy-hungry India and China, major suppliers of manufactured products and services.

"Trilateral relations can be forged in the future through the establishment of mutually advantageous energy contacts," the declaration read.

The Indian and Russian foreign ministers held talks in Moscow on October 21, while the Indian and Chinese premiers, Manmohan Singh and Wen Jiabao, met at the weekend on the sidelines of an ASEAN summit in Thailand.

The three countries are also members of the BRIC union with Brazil.

The Final Call | Africom: President Obama's Bush inheritance, challenge

October 26, 2009 - Africom is overseenby General William “Kip” Ward, the Army's highest-ranking Black American, and is the sixth U.S. geographic combatant command. Prior to Africom, the Pentagon's presence in Africa involved three geographic commands.

Created in February of 2007, launched in October of 2008 and headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany because it couldn't find a home base in Africa to protect U.S. interest abroad, this entity has been “charged with supporting U.S. military partners in Africa.”

Sounds more like the premier of the sequel to Ollie North and the boys Central American Insurgency. According to Colin Powell's former chief of staff during the Bush administration, Larry Wilkinson, it might not be far from the truth. “You have an enormous constituency for war, you have an enormous constituency for the instruments for war,” he told “Africom or Africon?” host/narrator Ragel Omar. Without skipping a beat, Mr. Wilkinson asked, “What constituency does the State Department have?”

“To find a voice that equals or exceeds the voice of the Pentagon is virtually impossible. How do you put up $30 billion,” which Mr. Wilkinson suggests is State Department's budget and “chump change,” against “nearly a quarter of a trillion dollars”—the estimated annual Pentagon budget.

Mr. Wilkinson went on to say, “That kind of money interests every congressman, every senator, every military contractor, from Haliburton to Lockheed.

According to the four-part series, when President Bush came into office, he had a series of meetings with oil executives. Mr. Wilkinson's “educated surmise” suggests they discussed “ensuring American's way of life,” and getting “our hands” on a “substantial” amount of oil to guarantee the continuance of the above. Telegraph.co.uk | An asteroid that exploded in the Earth’s atmosphere with the energy of three Hiroshima bombs this month

On 8 October, the rock crashed into the atmosphere above South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The blast was heard by monitoring stations 10,000 miles away, according to a report by scientists at the University of Western Ontario.

Scientists are concerned that it was not spotted by any telescopes, and that had it been larger it could have caused a disaster.

The asteroid, estimated to have been around 10 metres (30ft) across, hit the atmosphere at an estimated 45,000mph. The sudden deceleration caused it to heat up rapidly and explode with the force of 50,000 tons of TNT.

Luckily, due to the height of the explosion – estimated at between 15 and 20 km (nine to 12 miles) above sea level – no damage was caused on the ground.

However, if the object had been slightly larger – 20 to 30 metres (60 to 90ft) across – it could easily have caused extensive damage and loss of life, say researchers.

Very few objects smaller than 100 meters (300ft) across have been spotted and catalogued by astronomers. FULL STORY

SolarCycle24.com | Sunspot 1029 is a Beta-Gamma sunspot group with potential for C-Class and a lower chance of M-Class solar flares

Several C-Class Flares / Solar Flux above 80
10/27/2009 - Several low level C-Class flares have taken place around Sunspot 1029 in the past 24 hours. There will remain a chance for C-class and perhaps an M-Class flare. Sunspot 1029 has grown in size and is a pretty impressive sunspot cluster for Cycle 24.

The solar flux reached 81.3 on Monday, which is yet again a new record for Cycle 24. This is the highest Flux reading since March 2008 when Cycle 23 sunspots were present on the sun.

TampaBay.com | El Niño brings calm hurricane season but potentially hazardous winter

October 27, 2009 - El Niño has brought Floridians a calmer hurricane season, but the winter could be a much different story.

Think downpours, floods and tornadoes.

"We're going to have a very active winter," said Daniel Noah, the warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay.

No hurricanes have threatened Florida this season, which ends Nov. 30. But tornadoes have killed more people in Florida than hurricanes in recent years, so the National Weather Service is trying to get the word out about the flip side of El Niño.

El Niño forms every three to five years as warm surface waters in the Pacific Ocean shift from the west to east. Those warmer waters form upper atmospheric storms that can thwart hurricanes forming in the Atlantic.

But they can also cause havoc during the winter months.

This El Niño started in July and weakened eight hurricanes, Noah said. Now considered a moderate El Niño, it is expected to strengthen in the coming months, producing hazardous weather.

The opposite of El Niño — La Niña — occurs when surface water in the eastern Pacific cool to below average temperatures. That produces warmer winters, drier summers and a more active hurricane season in the Atlantic.

The last El Niño was during 2006 and 2007, and it led to the Christmas Day tornadoes that damaged about 100 homes in Pasco County. FULL STORY
