Sinkhole shows up for a second time in SC town

SANTEE, S.C. (AP) - A small South Carolina town has a mystery on its hands - one that literally has authorities looking into it.
The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reported Friday that a 20-foot-wide, 6-foot-deep sinkhole has appeared for a second time in Santee. Witnesses say a sinkhole similar in size occurred at the same spot about five years ago.
Santee State Park manager Nathan Maiwald says the areas around Lake Marion are part of a sinkhole system which begins in North Carolina and ends in Florida. He says sinkholes can occur when groundwater or an underground stream causes the limestone under the top layers of soil to give away.
Authorities think the latest hole in Santee developed overnight Wednesday. Santee State Park officials will monitor the sinkhole.
