OregonLive.com | Sea lion numbers fall, but appetites rise at Bonneville Dam, researchers say

Sharon Young, marine issues field director for the Humane Society, said the research indicates salmon consumption numbers are unlikely to drop. New sea lions will show up to replace removed animals. When they don't, she said, the animals left will prey more efficiently with fewer competitors.

Fishing and competition from sportfish do more to damage salmon runs than sea lions, she said.

"It's not that we favor sea lions over salmon," Young said. "We want something meaningful to happen for salmon, and this isn't it."........
