Australia.to | Obama to Meet Asian Leaders as China's Shadow Lengthens
WASHINGTON, Nov 11 (IPS) - U.S. President Barack Obama's attendance at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum leaders' meeting in Singapore next week will chart a new direction for U.S. participation in Asian multilateral diplomacy and call attention to the new administration's policy of engagement with the reclusive military-led government in Burma.Next week's summit between Obama and Southeast Asian leaders, which will occur on the sidelines of the APEC summit, signifies a major shift in U.S. diplomacy towards Southeast Asia from the approach of the George W. Bush administration, which focused on counterterrorism and military cooperation but largely ignored regional diplomatic frameworks, while China expanded its economic ties to the region.
China's increasing economic engagement in Southeast Asia has become most evident in its extensive economic ties to the ruling military junta in Burma and the China-ASEAN free trade agreement (FTA) which will come into effect in January.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, includes Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
Obama's summit with Southeast Asian leaders will be historic not only for the renewed U.S. interest in U.S.-ASEAN diplomatic ties, but also in that it will be one of the highest level meetings between a U.S. president and a top leader - Prime Minister Thein Sein - in Burma's military junta.
New Report Finds International Monetary Fund (IMF) Agreements Have Included Policies That Could Worsen Economic Slowdown in 31 of 41 Countries
Source: Center for Economic and Policy Research
A new discussion paper from the Center for Economic and Policy Research finds that 31 of 41 countries with current International Monetary Fund (IMF) agreements have been subjected to pro-cyclical macroeconomic policies that, during the current global recession, would be expected to have exacerbated economic slowdowns. The pro-cyclical conditions noted in the report are either pro-cyclical fiscal or monetary policies.
“More than a decade after the Asian Economic Crisis brought world attention to major IMF policy mistakes, the IMF is still making similar mistakes in many countries,” CEPR Co-Director and lead author of the paper, economist Mark Weisbrot said. “The IMF supports fiscal stimulus and expansionary policies in the rich countries, but has a much different attitude toward low-and-middle income countries.”
The paper, “IMF-Supported Macroeconomic Policies and the World Recession: A Look at Forty-One Borrowing Countries,” shows that in some cases, the IMF had relied on overly optimistic growth forecasts – significantly underestimating the impact of the world recession on borrowing countries. The paper also notes that in some cases the Fund later loosened its policy conditions after the economic performance was much worse than anticipated.

Wall Street Journal | States May Cut 900,000 Jobs Without More U.S. Aid, Think Tank Says
November 11, 2009 - State and local governments in the U.S. may be forced to cut 900,000 jobs next year without additional help from the federal government, according to a report released by a prominent liberal think tank Wednesday.
To prevent state budget cuts from imperiling an economy just beginning to recover, policy makers should send additional stimulus funds in 2010 to state and local governments, urged officials at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a Washington think tank.
If the government does not send more economic relief, deficit-strapped states trying to balance their budgets will have to make deep cuts in services and jobs. Those cuts could shave nearly a full point off the country’s gross domestic product and result in the loss of 900,000 jobs, the report predicts.
“Cutting services, laying off workers and raising taxes would further weaken the economy” at a time when its recovery would be especially fragile, said report co-author Iris Lav, a senior adviser at the think tank. FULL STORY

American Free Press | Chaos Manipulation a Forte of Global Elite
Who could calculate the effect of another false-flag “lone nut” domestic terrorist like Timothy McVeigh? Each of these scenarios is very real because the global elite have historically used crisis to disorient and overwhelm the populace into a state of shock so that they can push through legislation that had already been penned (i.e. two successive levels of Homeland Security and the Patriot Act enacted via the OKC Bombing and 9-11).
Barack Obama’s primary thug, Rahm Emanuel, recently quipped, “Never let a serious crisis go to waste.” New World Order elitists most certainly savor these moments. To them, crisis equals action, whether it’s a natural disaster, an orchestrated economic collapse, war, terror, or the instability of a coup.
When these “controlled chaos” events are foisted upon the public through the media’s shock and awe wizardry, the emergency suspends animation and people are far more open to suggestion and willing to comply. As such, we’re so focused on the misery and disaster that our personal interest is exploited before we realize what’s happening. FULL STORY

MercuryNews.com | U.S. is doing no good in Afghanistan
By Malalai Joy
Special to the Mercury News
Eight years ago, women's rights were used as one of the excuses to start this war. But today, Afghanistan is still facing a women's rights catastrophe. Life for most Afghan women resembles a type of hell that is never reflected in the Western mainstream media.
In 2001, the U.S. helped return to power the worst misogynist criminals, such as the Northern Alliance warlords and drug lords. These men ought to be considered a photocopy of the Taliban. The only difference is that the Northern Alliance warlords wear suits and ties and cover their faces with the mask of democracy while they occupy government positions. But they are responsible for much of the disaster today in Afghanistan, thanks to the U.S. support they enjoy.
The U.S. and its allies are getting ready to offer power to the medieval Taliban by creating an imaginary category called the "moderate Taliban" and inviting them to join the government. A man who was near the top of the list of most-wanted terrorists eight years ago, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, has been invited to join the government.
Over the past eight years the U.S. has helped turn my country into the drug capital of the world through its support of drug lords. Today, 93 percent of all opium in the world is produced in Afghanistan. Many members of Parliament and high ranking officials openly benefit from the drug trade. President Karzai's own brother is a well known drug trafficker. FULL STORY

BBC | Crime rings boost ivory smuggling
The last year has seen a major increase in the illegal ivory trade, with more involvement from organised crime.
November 11, 2009 - Figures compiled by Traffic, the agency charged with monitoring the trade, show a doubling in the volume of illegal ivory seized from 2008 to 2009.
Researchers believe most of it is poached in West and Central Africa, while China is the main destination.
Traffic says there is no evidence that last year's one-off legal sale of ivory in southern Africa boosted smuggling.
The volume of ivory seized is not a complete indication of the size of the illegal trade, because the effectiveness of police and customs authorities can vary from year to year and only a fraction of illegal consignments are discovered. FULL STORY

November 11, 2009 - And then there are today's veterans. Collins says that former President George W. "So, from where I sit," he continues, "this nation can take its Veterans Day banners, parades (from which veterans wishing to express the sentiments embodied in Armistice Day are routinely excluded) and red-banner sales of goods manufactured in China and shove it all where the sun don't shine." David said he could not release Schwarzenegger’s exact schedule for security reasons.

Pew Center on the States | These 10 states may be closest to financial collapse

California’s financial problems are in a league of their own. But the same pressures that drove the Golden State toward fiscal disaster are wreaking havoc in a number of states, with potentially damaging consequences for the entire country.
This examination by the Pew Center on the States looks closely at nine states, in addition to California, that are particularly affected by the recession. All of California’s neighbors–Arizona, Nevada and Oregon–and fellow Sun Belt state Florida were severely hit by the bursting housing bubble, landing them on Pew’s list of states facing fiscal difficulties similar to California’s. A Midwestern cluster of states comprising Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin emerged, too, as did the Northeastern states of New Jersey and Rhode Island. FULL STORY
ComputerWeekly.com | UFO Hacker Gary Mckinnon suicidal over health
November 11, 2009In the light of Gary McKinnon's hearings, the chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee has questioned whether the Human Rights Act is fit for purpose.
The Human Rights Act is so exacting that Gary McKinnon's risk of suicide might not be sufficient to engage its protections and prevent his extradition.
The threat of extradition was having a detrimental effect on McKinnon's mental health, said Janis Sharp, McKinnon's campaigning mother.
She told MPs on the Home Affairs Select Committee: "It has ruined Gary's life... it has destroyed him. If the door goes, he jumps. If someone touches him, he jumps. He has incredible chest pains every morning."
McKinnon, who has Asperger's Syndrome, became suicidal last month after the High Court threw out his appeal against extradition on human rights grounds. He was put on medication. "He would rather be dead than be extradited, that's the reality," Sharp said. FULL STORY

Heads Up – Respiratory Pneumonia in Ukraine Spreading Fast. Get Ready
http://www.stevequayle.com/News.alert/09_Disease/091111.Ukraine.flu.html
November 11, 2009
Rick in RomaniaEverything I am seeing out of the Ukraine is very troubling. The government of Ukraine is still holding to the story that this is h1n1, however there are reports now that doctors in Ukraine are not allowed to give a diagnosis of "plague", they must call it a respiratory pneumonia.
There are also widespread reports of the police seizing medical records of the dead and cremation of the bodies.
The people are saying the Russians did this but I have not seem any evidence to prove that. What I do know is Moshe said Baxter was going to release a plague in Ukraine and then he is assaulted and arrested by LAPD.
As far as I know we don't know if he was deported to Israel or if he was "suicided".We also have reports of low flying planes spraying the cities in Ukraine right before the outbreak. We have no idea what or who those planes were and the Ukraine govt denies them.Something is very wrong here and ever several days into this thing we are still operating mostly on leaked reports from individuals. Romanian news is no better, they are right next door and we are hearing almost nothing about it.
Major cover up in the works....I hate to think about how bad it really is. I'll keep everyone posted as I hear more.
Reply #4 on: November 10, 2009, 04:17:42 PM »
Short update...looks like this thing is in Romania now... there have been a small number of deaths reported from "respiratory pneumonia".... the same description the Ukrainian doctors have to give for this plague!
I don't think this is a coincidence. Get ready everyone, stock up on your antibiotics and your natural immune enhancers. I really have a bad feeling about this. With the US now doing a drill simulating the pneumonic plague, I think Wanderer is right on target when he suggests they will release it in the states. Ukraine did the same drill pneumonic plague) before it was released there. way too many dots here to feel comfortable.

AllHeadlinesNews.com | Western Greece Jolted By Magnitude 5.4 Earthquake
November 11, 2009 10:01 a.m. EST - Athens, Greece (AHN) - The Greek Ionian islands were rocked by an earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale on Wednesday. Officials say there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
Because the quake zone is one of Europe's most seismically active in Europe the building standards in the region are quite high thereby preventing widespread damage and injury. The underwater quake was recorded at 11:51 am and had an epicenter 182 miles west of the Greek capital Athens.
The region affected and the tourist island of Zakynthos has been experiencing seismic activity over the past few days. On Nov. 3 the Ionian islands suffered a quake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale.

In an advisory released at 7am on November 11, 2009, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) declared that the status of the Mayon Volcano remains at Alert Level 2.
A three-minute explosion type earthquake ocurred at 1:58am and baranggays nearby were affected by traces of ashfall. There have also been 20 recorded volcanic earthquakes in the past 24 hours.
PHIVOLCS strongly recommends staying away from the 6-km radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) around the volcano and the 7-km Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) on the southeast flank of the volcano due to the threat from sudden explosions and rockfall from the upper slope. Active river channels and lahar-prone areas in the southeast sector should also be avoided especially during bad weather conditions.

The service was launched by the Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corp. in Jakarta Wednesday. ASEAN stands for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
Other ASEAN countries using the yuan (Renminbi) trade settlement service are Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam and Brunei Darussalam, China's official Xinhua news agency reported.
The service is part of China's cautious effort to create a bigger global role for the yuan as the weakened U.S. dollar continues to be questioned as a world reserve currency. China holds the world's largest foreign exchange reserves of more than $2.1 trillion and is also the largest holder of U.S. debt.
"The Chinese government's policy to allow Renminbi as trade payment currency would improve the trade between the two countries," Vincent Sugianto, HSBC's head of trade, said. FULL STORY

Bush officials lead Iraq business push 09 Nov 2009 Senior Bush administration figures including Zalmay Khalilzad, former US ambassador to Baghdad, and Jay Garner, the retired general who led reconstruction efforts immediately after the war, are leading a new business push into Iraq. As the direct result of the Iraq war, major American and other transnational energy conglomerates are now gaining control over some the largest oilfields in the world.
US firm Blackwater in Iraq bribery scandal: report 10 Nov 2009 Executives at US security firm Blackwater approved secret payments of about one million dollars to Iraqi officials to "silence their criticism" after company guards killed 17 civilians in Baghdad in 2007, the New York Times has said. Citing interviews with four unnamed former Blackwater executives, the Times said the company's president at the time, Gary Jackson, approved the bribes.
Blackwater Authorized $1M In Bribes to Iraqi Officials After Shootings --Blackwater's buying off government officials is illegal under US law 11 Nov 2009 Top executives at Blackwater Worldwide authorized secret payments of about $1 million to Iraqi officials that were intended to silence their criticism and buy their support after a September 2007 episode in which Blackwater security guards mercenaries fatally shot 17 Iraqi civilians in Baghdad, according to former company officials. Blackwater approved the cash payments in December 2007, the officials said, as protests over the deadly shootings in Nisour Square stoked long-simmering anger inside Iraq about reckless practices by the security company’s employees. Four former Blackwater executives said in interviews that Gary Jackson, who was then the company’s president, had approved the bribes, and the money was sent from Amman, Jordan, where Blackwater maintains an operations [and torture] hub, to a top manager in Iraq. Lockerbie: Human rights lawyer states Megrahi was framed By Steve James 11 Nov 2009 Leading British human rights lawyer Gareth Peirce has stated that, in her opinion Abdel Baset Ali al-Megrahi, the only man accused and convicted of the 1988 bombing of PanAm flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, was framed. ...[F]ollowing the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1991, Iran and Syria both assisted the US invasion of Iraq. It was at this time that the focus of the Lockerbie investigation was shifted. Vincent Cannistraro, the architect of the Reagan administration’s CIA campaign of destabilisation against the Libyan government of Colonel Muammar Gadhaffi, was brought out of retirement to head the new line of investigation.
The Framing of al-Megrahi By Gareth Peirce 24 Sep 2009 It is, of course, now all about oil. Only a simpleton could believe that Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi, convicted of responsibility for the Lockerbie bombing, was not recently returned to his home in Libya because it suited Britain... Extraordinarily, however, distinct from the Dumfries and Galloway police, scores of men, some wearing no insignia, some the insignia of the FBI and Pan Am (it was noted at the time that many of these men were clearly not Pan Am staff), invaded the area. Lockerbie residents reported seeing unmarked helicopters hovering overhead, carrying men with rifles whose telescopic sights were pointing directly at them.
Obama exploits Fort Hood massacre to promote US wars By Bill Van Auken 11 Nov 2009 President Barack Obama used his speech at Tuesday’s service for the 13 men and women killed last week at Fort Hood, Texas to promote the two ongoing US wars and his own plan to escalate the intervention in Afghanistan. The president delivered his remarks as his administration is finalizing plans to send tens of thousands more US troops to Afghanistan.
Military not told about Ft. Hood suspect's e-mails 11 Nov 2009 Two high-profile anti-terrorism task forces did not inform the Defense Department about contacts between a radical Islamic cleric and the Army psychiatrist accused of killing 13 people in last week's rampage at Ft. Hood, a senior Defense official said Tuesday. The FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Forces investigated e-mails that Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan sent over the last year to Anwar al Awlaki, an imam in Yemen who espouses a radical Islamist ideology and who has ties to militants. However, officials said, task force members concluded that the communications posed no threat and had been undertaken as part of Hasan's research on Muslims, the military and post-traumatic stress disorders.
Senior Official: More Hasan Ties to People Under Investigation by FBI --Alleged Shooter Had 'Unexplained Connections' to Others Besides Jihadist Cleric Awlaki 10 Nov 2009 A senior government official tells ABC News that investigators have found that alleged Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan had "more unexplained connections to people being tracked by the FBI" than just radical cleric Anwar al Awlaki. The official declined to name the individuals but Congressional sources said their names and countries of origin were likely to emerge soon. Questions already surround Major Hasan's contact with Awlaki, a radical cleric based in Yemen whom authorities consider a recruiter for al Qaeda [al-CIAduh].

Local police were called to cordon off the area and told ABC News they were acting on instructions from the FBI. Moments later, four agents, wearing blue gloves, began to search through a trash bin outside the mosque.
Fort Hood suspect to be tried in military court 10 Nov 2009 The army psychiatrist suspected in the killing of 13 people in a shooting at the Fort Hood Army post will be charged in a military court, U.S. government officials said on Monday. The official said there is no indication that the accused gunman, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, had been planning an attack.
FBI, military checked Hasan, saw no terror threat, officials say 10 Nov 2009 The FBI and the military investigated contacts between an Army psychiatrist accused of last week's deadly shooting rampage at Fort Hood and a Yemen-based militant over the past year but concluded he didn't pose a terrorist threat, senior law enforcement and military officials said Monday.
Fort Hood Gunman Gave Signals Before His [Alleged] Rampage 09 Nov 2009 Major Hasan’s behavior in the months and weeks leading up to the shooting bespeaks a troubled man full of contradictions. He lived frugally in a run-down apartment, yet made a good salary and spent more than $1,100 on the pistol the authorities said he used in the shootings.
US Senate to probe whether base massacre was terrorism 10 Nov 2009 A Senate committee on homeland security will investigate the mass shootings at Fort Hood, Texas, to determine whether Major Nidal Malik Hasan's deadly shooting rampage was an act of terrorism. The chairman of the Senate committee on homeland security, Joseph Lieberman [I-Israel], told Fox News Sunday there had been ''strong warning signs'' that Major Hasan was an ''Islamist extremist''.
Ft. Hood: Official story full of holes By Gregory Patin 10 Nov 2009 The more information there is, the more inconsistencies that can be found. That does not make any topic a conspiracy theory, it just makes it what it is...questionable. A good example is what allegedly happened at Ft. Hood last week... A retired MP, Michael Martinez also said: "No way! That would be impossible. Even if he had two semi-auto pistols [according to reports he used a 9mm and a .357 revolver to gun down over 40 people] he would still have had to stop to reload and someone would have jumped his ass. Most people on base aren't carrying [weapons], but MPs are and they would have been there in a heartbeat." (CLG item in article)
Fort Hood Shooting Oddities.... By vii 10 Nov 2009 Folks, there are problems with the delivered Fort Hood Massacre scenario. You will not hear about them in the controlled press. You will hear about them in the alternative, internet media. Which is why the globalist cabal is seeking to censor it. All under the guise of "fighting hate", of course.... (CLG item in telegraph.co.uk blog)
CLG Exclusive: Fort Hood: 'This story stinks to high heaven.' --SFC, who spent ten years at Fort Hood, comments on Ft. Hood events 09 Nov 2009 I spent 10 years at Ft Hood. There is no way this 'official' story is legitimate. No way would a room full of combat vets allow this one shooter to get off over 100 rounds! And, it is not normal for the outside security guards to be there. They are at the MP station, and at the main gates. This means the room full of soldiers processing must have been pinned down; multiple shooters is the only plausible scenario. This sounds like MAJ Hasan has been used, and perhaps is a patsy. --SFC Donald Buswell (Retired)

KansasCity.com | Wind energy in Kansas hampered by lack of power lines
Driving through western Kansas, you’ll see hundreds of whirling wind turbines. But you won’t see lots of people — or high-voltage power lines.
And that is the big obstacle to realizing the wind-energy potential of Kansas and the Midwest: You can put up all the towers and turbines you like, but without more transmission lines, the added electricity won’t get to the cities that could use it.
Those lines will take years to build and cost tens of billions of dollars — if they are built at all.
“It’s a showstopper for renewable development,” said Ralph Cavanaugh, co-director of the Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental group with 1.3 million members.
The national power grid is a mishmash because much of it was built to serve utilities’ individual territories. That left the country with high-powered lines serving big populations in the East and West — but not connected to the windy corridor from the Dakotas to Texas. FULL STORY
