Haiti quake made gap between rich and poor even bigger

In the highest hills of Petionville, above the ruined Haitian capital, there are no dead in the streets. There is no rubble.
The earthquake that killed tens of thousands in the city below hardly touched the people of this wealthy neighborhood.
"Most of them chose to leave Haiti until the situation improves,'' said Jean Robert, 55, a worker who has been reinforcing walls in the posh neighborhood. "There are homes that have had damage. But they're few, and I don't think it's a problem. They'll build other ones.''
On the lower sides of the same hill, the change of scene is dramatic: The straight, spacious, tree-lined streets give way to a tangle of tiny homes. Bodies still lie amid the rubble, and the victims await help from international relief agencies.
But at the top, business goes on as usual. The hotel Ibo Lele remains open, and there are hardly any cracks in the walls of apartment buildings such as La Clos. Even the church, Divine Mercy Parish, is lucky. There will likely be a Mass on Sunday, and a crack on one of the altar walls will be repaired soon.
"The situation here is different,'' said Father Calixto Hilaire, the parish priest, acknowledging that the impact of the quake was hardly felt among the wealthier families in the district.

Over the past week, the U.S. has come under fire for its beefed up military presence on the Caribbean island. The U.S. military, which took control of Haiti's airport after the earthquake hit on Jan. 12, reportedly turned away cargo planes carrying humanitarian aid from the World Food Program and France.
General Douglas Fraser, who is in charge of the U.S. Southern Command, announced on Thursday that nearly 20,000 U.S. troops are expected to operate on and offshore, by Sunday. And Washington has said it plans to stay in the country for the long term.
"We are there for the long term, this is not something that will be resolved quickly and easily," U.S. Deputy Ambassador to the UN Alejandro Wolff said here on Thursday.
Several counties have deplored the large number of U.S. troops, including Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, who said Haiti seeks "humanitarian aid, not troops."
On Wednesday, Bolivian President Evo Morales said the U.S. should not use "a natural disaster to militarily occupy Haiti," and went so far as to say that "Haiti does not need more blood."
His comments were echoed again here on Friday during a meeting of the General Assembly, in which the world's countries adopted a resolution calling on the international community to provide Haiti with speedy and sustainable support.
Bolivia's deputy envoy to the UN, Pablo Solon-Romero said the world needs to overcome neocolonialism, which is the cause of Haiti's poverty in the first place.

A drone pilot's nightmare came true when operators lost control of an armed MQ-9 Reaper flying a combat mission over Afghanistan on Sunday. That led a manned U.S. aircraft to shoot down the unresponsive drone before it flew beyond the edge of Afghanistan airspace. Federal antitrust suit targets Dean Foods' acquisition of dairy plants

The U.S. Justice Department filed an antitrust suit Friday against Dallas-based Dean Foods Co. that seeks to overturn its acquisition last year of two Midwest processing plants from a rival.The suit, filed in Milwaukee, marks the first antitrust action taken by the federal government since several senators complained to regulators last summer about what they consider to be Dean's unfair dominance of the Northeastern dairy market.
The department said Dean's acquisition of Wisconsin-based Foremost Farms USA's consumer products division "eliminates substantial competition between the two companies."
After the acquisition, Dean controlled about 57 percent of the processed milk market in northeastern Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the department said.
"The purpose of the department's lawsuit is to restore competition so that schools, grocery stores and other retailers in Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin will pay lower prices for their milk," Christine Varney, who heads the Antitrust Division, said in a statement. The states joined in the lawsuit.
Dean, which became the nation's largest dairy processor through a series of acquisitions, said undoing the deal would result in higher costs for customers.
