Focus on Haiti: Washington's Militarized Takeover

After Washington ousted President Jean-Betrand Aristide in February 2004, UN Blue Helmets (MINUSTAH) occupied Haiti as paramilitary enforcers. They still do, subordinate to around 20,000 US land and sea based troops, including Marines, Army 82nd Airborne paratroupers, Navy assault ships, and Coast Guard vessels offshore, a powerful force for indefinite occupation, severe repression, and ruthless exploitation for American interests - obstructing, not providing, humanitarian aid, and facilitating potentially hundreds of thousands of deaths from starvation, dehydration, disease, untreated wounds, trauma, and for some perhaps just giving up and expiring unnoticed, unreported, and uncared about by forces able to help.

Haiti PM begs for help as looting grips devastated Port-au-Prince

Raw Story - Haiti's premier begged foreign donors Monday to back the reconstruction of his quake-hit country as fresh looting and chaotic food hand-outs underscored the grim conditions facing survivors.

If true, this demonstrates that despite all the photo ops of US troops handing out supplies and food, that very little is actually getting to the people who need it most desperately.

If in fact there is looting, it becomes yet another "excuse" for the US military to forcibly occupy the island and create a total martial law environment.

That will make it easier to grant sweetheart deals to companies salivating for the rights to exploit Haiti's mineral and oil wealth.

And ultimately, the people of Haiti will be no better off than they were before the quake struck.

Howard Zinn on "The People Speak," the Supreme Court and Haiti

Haiti is one of the most shameful episodes in US foreign policy. When it became the first independent black republic in this hemisphere, Jefferson(ironically, author of our Declaration of Independence)refused to recognize it.& for some time now, strangling Haiti economically,& ruining its rice crop for the benefit of US exporters. If we weren't spending on stupid wars,we could have made them less vulnerable to natural disasters.

Haiti Relief Supplies Sit at Airport--Why?

This lack of an effective aid response seems eerily reminiscent of Hurricane Katrina here in the US when supplies and manpower were not mobilized to save lives in New Orleans. What is even more amazing is that President Obama has tapped former President George W. Bush to help with the Haiti relief effort.

Nanosecond Trading Strains Infrastructure: Firms Failing to Control Their Algorithms

Source: Financial Times

Published on 01-26-2010

An explosion in trading propelled by computers is raising fears that trading platforms could be knocked out by rogue trades triggered by systems running out of control.

Trading in equities and derivatives is being driven increasingly by mathematical algorithms used in computer programs. They allow trading to take place automatically in response to market data and news, deciding when and how much to trade similar to the autopilot function in aircraft.

Analysts estimate that up to 60 per cent of trading in equity markets is driven in this way.

Concerns have been highlighted by news that NYSE Euronext, the transatlantic exchange operator, has fined Credit Suisse proprietary trading arm for the first time for failing to control its trading algorithms. In the Credit Suisse case, its system bombarded the NYSE’s systems with hundreds of thousands of “erroneous messages” in 2007, slowing down trading in 975 shares.

The case was far from isolated, say traders. CME Group, the Chicago-based futures exchange, is investigating a case this month where a trader in “amini” S&P Index futures contracts “inadvertently traded approximately 200,000 contracts as both buyer and seller”.

Afghans Deserve Peace

January 26, 2010

By Atta Rasul Malik A few days back, I happened to meet an Afghan in Peshawar. In our informal discourse I inquired of him; what was left in his country after so much fighting? Is there any thing significant or visible there? I further refined my question.”Nothing” was the expected answer. Poverty, misery, dictators, anarchy, Soviets, Mujaheedin, Intelligence Agencies, Taliban, Warlords, and now NATO, a time line, as lengthy as my age, 50 years, was before my eyes, I could hardly recall a moment when Afghanistan was smiling. The Afghan gentleman, a refugee who appeared to be more mature than... [Read the full story]

DRONES

"Every one of these dead non-combatants represents an alienated family, a new revenge feud,

- David Kilcullen (Counterinsurgency Expert) Center for New American Security

Report: U.S. Drone Goes Down Over Pakistan, Again.

A U.S. drone reportedly crashed in Pakistan on Sunday. The Associated Press calls it “a rare mishap for a program Washington has increasingly relied on to kill Taliban and al-Qaida militants.” But that’s not quite right; American unmanned aircraft go down all the time. They’ve even gone down before in Pakistan.

According to U.S. Air Force statistics, Predator and Reapers drones have suffered at least 85 “class A mishaps” — accidents which caused a million dollars’ worth of damage or more. Typically, 14 of these accidents takes place for every 100,000 hours a Predator flies.

Drones are more glitch-prone than traditional planes. Communications with their remote pilots regularly cut out, forcing the robotic aircraft into automatic holding patterns. The unmanned planes don’t handle rain, snow, heavy clouds, or high winds particularly well; the Air Force typically grounds as many drone flights as it can if there’s bad weather. Landing the aircraft (especially under inclement conditions) is awfully tricky. That’s when almost all of the Reaper accidents have taken place.

Obama Mulls Legality of ‘Taking Out’ US-Born Cleric

Can Obama ‘Take Out’ a Citizen Not Charged With Any Crimes?

By Jason Ditz | January 25, 2010

According to US intelligence officials, the Obama Administration has “missed” several opportunities to assassinate US-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki because lawyers are still unclear on the legality of killing him.

At issue is that Awlaki, a New Mexico-born Muslim cleric, is not charged with any crimes under US law and is only speculatively linked by the Obama Administration to terrorism through secret “intelligence reports.”

As a native-born citizen of the United States, assassinating him on the basis of secret evidence which is so shaky that officials haven’t felt comfortable issuing charges against him is a legal grey area, to say the least.

But despite this legal concern, officials had no problem in backing Yemeni air strikes which attempted to assassinate Awlaki just last month. US officials said Awlaki was ‘probably’ killed in those strikes, though it later turned out he wasn’t even present at the site of the attack.

Nervous elite trudges up the mountain

Atlantic Online - ‎2 hours ago‎
DAVOS, Switzerland -

At Davos this week the alarm bells and worries over a new economic dip will be sounded by the likes of George Soros, Joe Stiglitz and Nouriel Roubini, while the Obama Administration will be represented by veteran Davos schmoozer Larry Summers, with a likely co-star in Barney Frank.

King Abdullah and Queen Rania of Jordan will be ubiquitous, the most articulate and charming power couple on the circuit. Other star performers will include Nicolas Sarkozy of France, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil, David Cameron -- the man most likely to take over as prime minister of Britain this May -- plus the usual assortment of veteran talkers from Bill Clinton to Bill Gates.

And set against this will be the real story that only some of the traditional media will highlight: the emergence of China, India, and Southeast Asia as the real engines of global recovery in 2010, and the growing importance of the economies that form a new Silk Road of GDP growth and prosperity.

Look out Davos, the Clinton Global Initiative has pulled in front as the world's top executive conference, according to an annual survey by a global public relations firm.

Last year the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, came out on top. This year Davos has slipped to fourth place, and former president Bill Clinton's Global Initiative, which runs over three September days in New York, has snagged the No. 1 slot.

Obama to Seek Partial 3-Year Spending Freeze, Penalizes Americans, Keeps Foreign Aid

President Obama, after approving billions of dollars in spending increases in his first year in office, now is seeking a three-year federal spending freeze that would reduce budgets by less than 1 percent.

Obama's proposed budget cuts spare foreign aid

Um, Hellooo!!! Am I the only one who sees something seriously wrong with this picture???

Obama's three-year spending freeze will be part of the budget Obama will submit Feb. 1, senior administration officials said, commenting on condition of anonymity to reveal unpublished details.

The savings would be small at first, perhaps $10 billion to $15 billion, one official said. But over the coming decade, savings would add up to $250 billion.

The Pentagon, veterans programs, foreign aid and the Homeland Security Department would be exempt from the freeze.

A country that can't afford to spend on its own domestic expenditures has no goddamn business "aiding" other countries!

Egypt's Internet Crackdown

In the case of Egypt, the familiar dictum that all that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing is far from sufficient.Evil triumphs in Cairo because supposedly good men in the West openly and unapologetically fund and arm it. America has supplied Egypt with approximately $50 billion of aid (primarily military) since Hosni Mubarak came to power three decades ago. Stability was supposedly bought at the price of liberty—a fool's bargain. Instead, Egypt remains impoverished, illiterate, autocratic, corrupt, and repressive, not exactly the conditions for lasting stability or peace.

Ah, yes, good old Hosni Mubarak; a consummate thug, but nonetheless our thug.

This is another grand example of the US government being pathologically incapable of learning the lessons of history.

When peaceful revolution is impossible, violent revolution is inevitable.

There will be a breaking point for the Egyptian people, and my guess is, that breaking point will not be too long in coming, no matter how repressive the current Egyptian government may be.

HEALTH SCANDAL - MONSANTO'S GMO PERVERSION OF FOOD

NewsWithViews.com

In the 2010 growing season Monsanto plans to unleash its latest Frankenfood experiment on the American and Canadian public, a new version of genetically mutated corn with eight abnormal gene traits called Genuity SmartStax corn. It is the culmination of an astonishing scandal that has been steadily building over the past decade. During this time Monsanto’s mutated seeds have grown to 90% of the U.S. soy crop and 85% of the corn crop – and wheat is next on their agenda. Their efforts have been marked by corporate bullying and have drawn the attention of the Justice Department who is conducting an antitrust investigation. All the while they have been spending millions on lobbying to fast track their agenda before the American public even realizes what hit them. Monsanto is making an ominous power play to corner the worldwide market on food and seeds. In the process they are adversely altering the very nature of food itself.

World Sugar Inventories at an All-Time Low

Sugar Hits 29-Year High

January 26, 2010
Tom Sellen
Wall Street Journal

Strong demand for sugar catapulted prices above 30 cents a pound in intraday trading to a 29-year high. The tight global supply situation was illustrated by news Monday that Indonesia expected a 530,976-metric-ton production shortfall at the end of April, which will be met largely through imports totaling 500,000 tons. Efforts to import white sugar have been stymied by soaring world prices and a lack of sellers.

If you read any economic, financial, or political analysis for 2010 that doesn’t mention the food shortage looming next year, throw it in the trash, as it is worthless. There is overwhelming, undeniable evidence that the world will run out of food next year. When this happens, the resulting triple digit food inflation will lead panicking central banks around the world to dump their foreign reserves to appreciate their currencies and lower the cost of food imports, causing the collapse of the dollar, the treasury market, derivative markets, and the global financial system. The US will experience economic disintegration.

Yellowstone Volcano Observatory

Tectonic Plates Thought Responsible for Swarm of Yellowstone National Park

The recent swarm of earthquakes noted at Yellowstone National Park were most likely caused by shifts in tectonic plates, not pressures in the magma chamber beneath the park, according to geologists.

According to the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, University of Utah semismograph stations in the park noted a pair of earthquakes Sunday evening that measured magnitudes of 3.0 and 3.1. The first event of magnitude 3.0 occurred at 11:09 p.m. and was followed by a magnitude 3.1 event at 11:21 p.m., the observatory reported.

Both shocks were located around 9 miles southeast of West Yellowstone, Montana, and about 10 miles northwest of Old Faithful. Typically, events of this magnitude are felt in and around the park, but there were no reports of these particular events being felt, the observatory noted.

These two earthquakes are part of an ongoing swarm in Yellowstone that began January 17, 2010. The largest earthquake in the swarm as of 9 a.m. MST, January 25, was a magnitude 3.8, the observatory reported. There have been 1,271 located earthquakes in the swarm of magnitude 0.5 to 3.8. This includes 11 events of magnitude larger than 3, with 97 events of magnitude 2 to 3, and 1,163 events of magnitude less than 2. There have been multiple personal reports of ground shaking from observers inside the park and in surrounding areas for some of the larger events.

Earthquake swarms are relatively common in Yellowstone.

The swarm events are likely the result of slip on pre-existing faults and are called tectonic earthquakes and are not thought to be caused by underground movement of magma, the observatory staff noted. Currently, there is no indication of premonitory volcanic or hydrothermal activity, but ongoing observations and analyses will continue to evaluate these different sources.

Seismic information on the earthquake can be viewed at the University of Utah Seismograph Stations: http://www.seis.utah.edu/.

Seismograph recordings from stations of the Yellowstone seismograph network can be viewed online at: http://quake.utah.edu/helicorder/yell_webi.htm.

Anyone who has felt earthquakes in the swarm are encouraged to fill out a form on the USGS Community Felt reports web site: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/dyfi/.

Climategate update: ‘The wheels are coming off for the IPCC’

Thomas McClanahan | The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is supposed to represent the unimpeachable view of science. Now we’re learning just how sloppy it’s methods have been.

The United Nations is just a debating society and a 'front' for banks

"Today, America would be outraged if U.N. troops entered Los Angeles to restore order. Tomorrow they will be grateful! This is especially true if they were told that there were an outside threat from beyond, whether real or promulgated, that threatened our very existence. It is then that all peoples of the world will plead to deliver them from this evil. The one thing every man fears is the unknown. When presented with this scenario, individual rights will be willingly relinquished for the guarantee of their well-being granted to them by the World Government."

Residents in Harbour Mille, a tiny community on Newfoundland's south coast, want to know what it was they saw in the sky Monday night.

Darlene Stewart said she was outside taking pictures of the sunset when she saw something fly overhead.

She snapped a picture of the object in an attempt to zoom in on it to see what it was.

"Even with the camera, I couldn't make it out until I put it on the computer," she told CBC News. "I knew then it wasn't an airplane. It was something different."

A picture snapped by Stewart shows a blurry image of what appears to be some kind of missile-like object with either flames or heavy smoke coming from its back.

Elly Pardy also saw the object in the sky, and along with other residents, reported what she saw to the RCMP and federal fisheries officers.

Officials from both organizations were in the community Tuesday investigating the reports.

The residents plan to be outdoors again Tuesday evening to see if there is a similar sight in the sky.
