Backdoor taxes to hit middle class

The Obama administration's plan to cut more than $1 trillion from the deficit over the next decade relies heavily on so-called backdoor tax increases that will result in a bigger tax bill for middle-class families.

Largest-ever federal payroll to hit 2.15 million!

Washington Post February 2, 2010

The era of big government has returned with a vengeance, in the form of the largest federal work force in modern history.

The administration says 79 percent of the increases in recent years are from departments related to the war on terrorism: Justice, Defense, Homeland Security, State and Veterans Affairs.

After years of decline at the end of the Cold War, the Defense Department is restaffing. Mr. Obama estimated that the Pentagon will have 720,000 employees this year and 757,000 employees next year - up from a low of 649,000 in 2003.

The data also show that the Department of Homeland Security will grow by 7,000 a year in 2010 and 2011, and the Veterans Affairs Department will grow by 12,000 in 2010 and an additional 4,000 in 2011.

The American Federation of Government Employees, the union that represents many government workers, said it was combing through the budget and did not have a comment.

Two analogies for everyone to understand how US wars in Iraq and Iran are unlawful

February 2, 10:16 AM LA County Nonpartisan Examiner Carl Herman

Laws are meant to be perfectly clear and followed; especially those to save human beings from the scourge of war. The UN Charter are those laws, fortified with treaty status that under the US Constitution puts the Charter equal in authority to US law. The problem is that when political “leadership” of both parties want war, and then engage their propaganda minions in corporate media disclosed in the 1975 Church Senate Committee as “Operation Mockingbird,” Americans can easily be dis-informed. After all, Americans witness few wars and not many of us study the UN Charter to clearly understand lawful and unlawful wars.

Va. Senate bans health insurance mandate

The Democratic-led Virginia Senate sent a strong message about health care reform efforts in Washington, D.C., on Monday (Feb. 1), passing a bill that makes it illegal for Virginians to be required to buy health insurance.

With Republicans in control of the state’s House of Delegates and governor’s mansion, the bill could become law, The Washington Post reported. The effort would throw another wrench into congressional Democrats’ plans to revamp the nation’s health care system in the wake of a special election in Massachusetts that stripped the party of its 60-vote, filibuster-proof majority in the U.S. Senate.

America’s Secret Prisons for Undocumented Immigrants

GlobalResearch.ca - 2010-02-02

There are at least 186 secret detention centers maintained by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) within the borders of the US, according to an article published in the Nation magazine in December. Drawing on a report by Amnesty International (AI) entitled “Jailed without Justice,” it estimates that 415,000 people have been held at these facilities, which are operated under the authority of the Department of Homeland Security as so-called “sub-field offices” of the ICE. Their purpose is to deny undocumented immigrants due process and any means by which they can effectively lobby for their rights.

Obama Administration Vision: War Without End

The Obama administration has unveiled a scary new view of the global security landscape and a new strategy intended to protect Americans and U.S. allies. It is a sharp change from previous Pentagon strategic assessments in that it focuses on the wars Americans are currently fighting, rather than on future conflicts in which the United States might be involved.

And that future, in the Pentagon's view, is quite grim.

The new assessment -- reflecting "a bracing dose of realism,'' said Defense Secretary Robert Gates -- promises no respite from today's conflict-wracked world, and no backing away from the billions of dollars for new hardware and new capabilities that the administration says it will take to stay safe ...

150,000 metro Detroiters are at risk of having their heat shut off

Detroit Free Press February 2, 2010

State and local agencies estimate an unprecedented 150,000 metro Detroiters are at risk of having their heat shut off if they don't receive help paying their bills. The number of people seeking state assistance so far this winter jumped 30% over last year at this time, according to the state Department of Human Services.Officials blame the rise on metro Detroit's miserable economy that continues to cost people their jobs. Since last winter, unemployment rose 33% -- to 288,000 people -- for the tri-county area, according to state employment data.

BANKSTER NEWS

Warning: This is Not Another Wall Street Conspiracy Theory, These are the Facts

What really stinks about the whole mess is not only the cover-up of what really happened and why, but the inability of anybody in Congress to actually do their homework and be able to frame pointed questions and get to the truth.
This whole affair raises scores of questions. Last week's hearing before Congress drove that point home. In fact, as I watched the testimony, I realized that our elected representatives didn't even know the correct questions to ask. That's why it's time to write your congressmen and tell them to ask:
  • Why didn't the Treasury Department make the required margin calls - if they were needed - and stand to get collateral back if the insured CDOs rose in value?
  • Why did the New York Fed buy paper at 50 cents on the dollar and pay banks 100 cents, when they had no idea what the intrinsic value of those securities was at the time?
  • Who really leaned on the New York Fed to not disclose who got our taxpayer money?
  • What did Stephen Friedman know about the payments to Goldman?
  • What records exist of correspondence between Friedman and Timothy Geithner, who was then president of the New York Fed?
  • What records exist of correspondence between Friedman and Henry M. Paulson, Geithner's predecessor as Treasury secretary and a former Goldman CEO himself.
  • If Goldman was really hedged as Friedman appeared to claim, then why did taxpayers pay the investment bank 100 cents on the dollar?
  • Did Goldman (and others) drive down the value of securities to collect cash, demand to be made whole and at the same time buy credit-default-swap insurance on AIG, which they were helping to sink?
  • Can we see the trade blotters of Goldman's trading desks to determine what trading strategy those traders employed during this period and later when making record profits?
  • Why are so many Goldman Sachs people in so many powerful government positions?
  • Why has the United States government allowed a cabal of financial interests to hijack America?
That's a start. I urge you add to the list and forward it to President Barack Obama and to your elected representatives in Congress. It's our money, our future and our financial freedom being held hostage.

US refuses to share info on Mumbai suspect

The US has refused to share details about the past records of a key terror suspect of the 2008 Mumbai attack, Indian intelligence sources say.

The Indian team tasked with probing the Mumbai bombing is desperately looking for information regarding the role David Headley played in the deadly attack that killed 166, but Washington has denied them access to the details, Fars news agency reported on Saturday.

According to the report which is a translated version of an article posted on the American Free Press website, Indian intelligence sources claim that the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has continued to withhold information on the suspect.

Feb 02, 2010 4:59 PM LasVegasNow.com

President Obama is catching heat from Nevada lawmakers and business leaders regarding his comments Tuesday criticizing trips to Las Vegas.

During the president's town hall meeting in Nashua, New Hampshire, he discussed the need to curb spending during tough economic times. "When times are tough, you tighten your belts," the president said. "You don't go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage. You don't blow a bunch of cash on Vegas when you're trying to save for college."

The president's comments come nearly a year after he criticized companies that received federal money for taking corporate junkets to Las Vegas. "You can't go take that trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on taxpayers' dime," he said at the time. Local business leaders say Nevada tourism suffered last year in part because companies canceled trips to Las Vegas in the wake of the president's comments.

His statement Tuesday drew sharp criticism from Nevada lawmakers. "The President needs to lay off Las Vegas and stop making it the poster child for where people shouldn't be spending their money," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat. "Las Vegas is suffering through one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, and we cannot afford for the President to bring us down any further," added Republican Senator John Ensign. "Nevada has one of the most distressed economies in the country, and the President has done little to focus on job creation over the past year. Discouraging people from coming to our state to make a political point adds insult to injury," said Republican Congressman Dean Heller.

"Tourism is the number one economic stimulus for Southern Nevada and for many cities and states across the country. While we appreciate Las Vegas is top of mind for the President, we would ask that he offer words of encouragement instead of criticism," Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority President and CEO Rossi Ralenkotter said.

President Obama is scheduled to visit Las Vegas this month.

ARGENTINA

Argentina - The problems of the President on the nation

02 Feb 2010

By Michael Soltys, Buenos Aires Herald Senior Editor

Conventional wisdom argues that the current crisis has been one gigantic nightmare for the presidential couple leading to one blunder after another in a counterproductive drive for the Central Bank reserves but the government could also end up achieving even more objectives on a broadened front.

Depletion of the AFJP private pension funds confiscated only 14 months ago (and the devastating capital flight which followed that body blow to confidence) induced the Cristina Fernández de Kirchner administration to raid the biggest piggy-bank in the country, namely the Central Bank reserves, but the dubious legality of this move caused it to run afoul of various courts. But not only is the battle for the Central Bank far from lost (with a far less independent helm all but confirmed now that Martín Redrado’s exit is sealed), this month’s courtroom setbacks have supplied a powerful motive to go after the judicial branch, not excluding the Supreme Court itself (where Justice Carlos Fayt turned 91 last month) — the CFK administration has already identified its next enemy and target by coming up with the name of “judicial party” to smear independent judges.

The battle for the Bicentennial Fund to pass Central Bank reserves to the Treasury may have been lost (at the price of blackening the name of that historic milestone in the first days of the year) but not the war for those reserves.

All it takes is to abandon the sham that the reserves were required for foreign debt service (even if they had been used for their nominal purpose, the budgetary allocations to service debt would have been promptly freed for populist spending) and the CFK administration may count on enthusiastic centre-left support for laying hands on the reserves — not to mention provincial governors desperate for public works (and also vulnerable to the manipulation of being denied their federal revenue-sharing funds).

It is hard to believe that the opposition would be so naïve as to allow Central Bank reserves to be used by the state for lofty social projects and public works, only to see them vanish into Kirchner campaign coffers, but it is equally hard to envisage how cast-iron safeguards against this abuse could be created, despite the opposition majority in Congress — the prospects are not good.

A sagging public image and successive blunders do not rule out the possibility that this government could be losing countless battles but winning its war.

Argentina - The Government and the Central Bank

02 Feb 2010

By now you know Argentine politics, there’s never a dull moment — literally.

Not even Friday evening is dull. Come off it. Friday evening, when it comes to political news, should be a bore. Even hacks need to take a breather. Try telling that to Martín Redrado, the — suspended? fired? former? — chief of the Central Bank. Redrado held a press conference on Friday night and called it quits. “My time,” Redrado said, “is up.” It was a theatrical end to an ugly row between Redrado and President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner over the use of 6.57 billion dollars of Central Bank reserves to service debt this year.

But did the President sigh in relief after watching Redrado throw in the towel on television? No. Cabinet Chief Aníbal Fernández, even as Redrado was fielding questions from reporters in the plush hotel where he held the press conference, said that “for us the resignation does not exist, we must await the resolution of Congress.”

Did you get that straight? Yes, the President is refusing to accept Redrado’s resignation. Things are never simple when they aren’t dull.

The Central Bank case is a legal and political wrangle. Fernández de Kirchner fired Redrado by decree on January 7 purportedly after he voiced objections in private about the legal consequences of moving 6.57 billion dollars in Central Bank money to a Bicentennial Fund managed by the Treasury.

AFRICOM: Militarization of U.S. Foreign Policy New America Media - ‎Jan 28, 2010‎

But over the past year, the Obama administration has failed to increase funding for HIV/AIDS programs, bolstered the much maligned International Monetary Fund (IMF), and tripled the budget for the U.S. Military Command in Africa (AFRICOM) -- all actions that will further entrench poverty on the continent rather than improving the lives of African people, states the report.

Africa Policy Outlook 2010

The argument that AFRICOM is primarily designed to provide humanitarian support has largely disappeared. Yet the United States still struggles to persuade African people of the benefits of AFRICOM. To most observers, Africa has never been the intended beneficiary of AFRICOM. Based on the historical record, including direct comments from National Security Advisor James Jones, co-founder of AFRICOM, the goal of the new command is to protect U.S. access to oil and to protect U.S. corporate interests in Africa.

Market Manipulation

February 2, 2010
From China Joe to Steve

The manipulation of the markets now show that the USD is strengthening against the EURO. The EURO is weakening because we still use the USD to buy commodities around the world.

From what I was just told that is the time not to buy but sell off positions in the USD.

Sort of opposite laws rule in these times. If it goes up, don't buy, sell, if it goes down, then buy. Then you are ahead of the curve coming up.

Taiwan has Obama's trust for arms, which is disturbing to the Chinese. This may force the hand for China to dump more equity in the USA's economy.

The big question is: the stored funds in the sovereign trusts of governments and queens have to be assignable. That means after the fall, there is a place to reboot the system with. That area of finance is stored in the computer in Switzerland. Everything else that deals with speculative measures will die off finally. So more banks will be consumed this year.

There is no gold offers that I have seen that are real and moveable for over 3 months. Private sales are very quiet.

It's the calm before the storm. Word out of NYC, is that the city is dead for business, that means that if you can't bunker down now, you will fall through the grid very shortly.

Salmon farming is a multi-billion dollar global industry

Chile - New technology in fish farming

02 Feb 2010

The use of copper mesh in salmon farms is not only a mechanism against bacteria and fish diseases, but also reduces the generation of carbon for every kilo of salmon produced.

Accorging to Diario Financiero, Víctor Pérez, president of EcoSea Farming explained that thanks to antifouling properties from copper which do not allow the adherence of microorganisms and its resistance to attacks by sea lions, which reduces the need for maintenance, operational costs and fuel consumption decrease, the use of copper cages in fish farming could reduce carbon emissions by 20 per cent per kilo of farmed salmon.

Mr Perez said that in Chile there are 18 cages in use in Camachaca, Friosur and glaciers.

He said the company hopes to expand the business in 2010, wanting to close the year with over 60 cages installed across Chile.

Copper Alloy Fish Cages

Salmon farming is a multi-billion dollar global industry facing considerable difficulties posed by growing pressure from environmental regulatory bodies. Because marine organisms grow on and "foul" synthetic nets, oxygen available to fish is reduced and infectious diseases and parasites can spread among the fish. The combination of copper alloys' antifouling, antibacterial properties, and mechanical strength leads to healthier fish without antibiotic use, prevents the escape of farmed fish due to attacks by marine mammals, and can reduce production costs by up to 30%. Copper alloy nets are completely recycled at the end of their useful life.

Defense Secretary Cohen's 1997 Warning about Scalar EM Geotechnical Terrorism

“Others [terrorists] are engaging even in an eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves… So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations…It's real, and that's the reason why we have to intensify our [counterterrorism] efforts.”

- Secretary of Defense William Cohen at an April 1997 counterterrorism conference sponsored by former Senator Sam Nunn. Quoted from DoD News Briefing, Secretary of Defense William S. World’s Biggest Emitters Sign Up to Copenhagen Accord

Feb. 1 (Bloomberg) -- China, the U.S. and the 27-nation European Union signed up to the Copenhagen Accord, giving life to the first climate-protection agreement that contains numerical goals for all the biggest greenhouse-gas emitters.

They were joined by Australia, Indonesia, Canada, Japan and India, according to national governments and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which is compiling the pledges. They had until Jan. 31 to formally back the accord.

The United Nations is just a debating society and a 'front' for banks

"Today, America would be outraged if U.N. troops entered Los Angeles to restore order. Tomorrow they will be grateful! This is especially true if they were told that there were an outside threat from beyond, whether real or promulgated, that threatened our very existence. It is then that all peoples of the world will plead to deliver them from this evil. The one thing every man fears is the unknown. When presented with this scenario, individual rights will be willingly relinquished for the guarantee of their well-being granted to them by the World Government."
Dr. Henry Kissinger, Bilderberger Conference, Evians, France, 1991

Kissinger Genocide Report 1974 NSSM

You Are In the Way. It’s that simple.

US foreign policy became very clear in the December 10, 1974 National Security Study Memorandum, “NSSM 200, Implications of Worldwide Population Growth for U.S. Security and Overseas Interests” also called the Kissinger Document. In it, an explicit policy by which the US would promote rapid population decline in 13 countries was articulated. Kissinger’s now famous (and declassified) quote sums up the elaborate plan:

“Depopulation should be the highest priority of foreign policy towards the third world, because the US economy will require large and increasing amounts of minerals from abroad, especially from less developed countries.”

NSSM 200 became official US policy in November 1975 under President Gerald Ford. Birth control, war and famine were all tools to serve US access to mineral resources without impediments caused by third word populations who were to be eliminated. Brent Scowcroft, Kissinger’s replacement as National Security Adviser was put in charge of implementing the plan. CIA Director George Bush was ordered to assist Scowcroft, along with the Secretaries of State, Treasury, Defense, and Agriculture. READ MORE

From a News Update reader:

2010 -- The Year of the Citizen

Take a look at this and remember the election in Nov., 2010.

U.S. House & Senate have voted themselves $4,700 and 5,300 raises.

1. They voted to not give you a S.S. Cost of living raise in 2010 and 2011.

2. Your Medicare premiums will go up $285.60 for the 2-years and you will not get the 3% COLA: $660/yr. Your total 2-yr loss and cost is -$1,600 or -$3,200 for husband and wife.

3. Over 2-yrs they each get $10,000

4. Do you feel SCREWED?

5. Will they have your cost of drugs - doctor fees - local taxes - food, etc., increase? NO WAY . They have a raise and better benefits. Why care about you? You never did anything about it in the past. You (we) were obviously too stupid or didn't care.

6. Do you really think that Nancy, Harry, Chris, Charlie, Barney, et al, care about you?

SEND THE MESSAGE-- You're FIRED.

IN 2010, YOU WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO GET RID OF THE SITTING CONGRESS: Up to 1/3 OF THE SENATE, AND 100% OF THE HOUSE.

MAKE SURE YOU'RE STILL MAD IN NOVEMBER 2010 AND REMIND THEIR REPLACEMENTS NOT TO SCREW UP.

It is ok to forward this to your sphere of influence if you are finally tired of the abuse.

Maybe it's time for........

Amendment 28

"Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators or Representatives, and Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators or Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States ."

Let's get this passed around, folks - these people in Washington have brought this upon themselves!!! It's time for retribution. Let's take back America .

If you don't forward this to all your friends you're just part of the problem of national apathy.

UP.
