SpaceWeather.com | Goddard Space Weather Lab forcasts CME explosion from M-6 Class flare of 7/28/12 WILL BE EARTH DIRECTED to arrive on Tuesday


GEOMAGNETIC STORM WARNING: NOAA forecasters estimate a 45% chance of polar geomagnetic storms on July 29-30 in response to a high-speed solar wind stream buffeting Earth's magnetic field. Even stronger storming could occur on July 31st when a CME associated with yesterday's M6-flare arrives. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras for the next three nights. Aurora alerts: text, voice.

SOLAR ACTIVITY PICKS UP: Sunspot AR1532 is crackling with M-class solar flares. The latest, an M6-class eruption on July 28th (2056 UT), produced a bright flash of extreme ultraviolet radiation, shown here in a snapshot from the Solar Dynamics Observatory:


Update: Contrary to earlier reports, this explosion did produce a CME and the cloud is heading for Earth. According to a forecast track prepared by analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab, the CME will reach our planet on July 31st at 1500 UT (+/- 7 hours). Weak to moderate geomagnetic storms are possible when the cloud arrives.

The M5.6 Solar Flare from earlier today did generate a blob of plasma that looks to be directed mostly towards the south and not towards Earth. This image by STEREO Ahead COR2 shows the direction of the CME cloud. 




Plasma shoots out, Plasma gets sucked back. Here is a great view of the solar flare along with the plasma that was ejected. Most of the CME material did not escape and was sucked back in towards the Sun.

Two prominences are seen lifting off in the northern hemisphere. The second one of these events produced a Coronal Mass Ejection that was mostly directed to the north.

Coronal Mass Ejection

Yet another Coronal Mass Ejection is seen in the latest images. This image captured by STEREO Ahead COR2 shows that there is potential for an Earth bound plasma cloud. More images will be needed to determine if this is so, or if it will again be directed to the east.

Returning active regions should begin to rotate into view by the weekend.

SolarHam.com | Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) off NW limb this morning - February 9, 2012

A new sunspot is growing rapidly in the southeast quadrant and should be numbered 1416 on Thursday. This region is currently producing low level solar flares. There will continue to be a chance for C-Class flares on Thursday. Elsewhere, newly numbered region 1415 remains stable as it approaches the western limb.

A Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) is seen billowing away off the northwest limb this morning. This could be related to activity surrounding Sunspot 1410 which is now out of direct Earth view. Image is below.

The Earth facing side of the Sun may be quiet, however the farside of the Sun appears to be a different story. Yesterday there were two Coronal Mass Ejections, including this one which was directed to the north and away from Earth.

A magnetic filament in the sun's northern hemisphere erupted on Jan. 5th and hurled a CME in the general direction of Earth. At first it appeared that the cloud would sail north of Earth and completely miss our planet. Subsequent work by analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab suggests a different outcome: the CME might deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field on Jan. 7th. Bright CME / S1 Minor Radiation Storm:

Early this morning on Saturday, something exploded near the western limb causing a bright Coronal Mass Ejection. The image below is captured by Lasco C2 and in the new STEREO Ahead COR2 images, it does appear to be a full halo event with perhaps an Earth directed component. The proton levels are near the S1 Minor Radiation Storm threshold. More to follow.

Tuesday's 2 CMEs will pass North of Earth - only glancing blow to our magnetic field ETA - Sep 8-10

STRONG SOLAR ACTIVITY: Sunspot 1283 is crackling with solar flares. Yesterday, Sept. 6th, the active region produced an M5.3-class eruption at 0150 UT followed by a X2.1-class event at 2220 UT. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded this extreme UV flash from the X-flare.

The flares produced waves of ionization in Earth's upper atmosphere, briefly altering the propagation of low-frequency radio signals around our planet. Moreover, the two eruptions hurled clouds of plasma (CMEs) in our general direction. A preliminary analysis of SOHO and STEREO imagery suggests that the CMEs could sail substantially north of Earth, delivering a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field as they pass. ETA: Sept. 8-10.

BREAKING NEWS: X Flare!!!

A strong X2.1 Class Solar Flare took place at 22:20 UTC Tuesday and was centered around Sunspot 1283. Another CME now looks to have resulted.

A Type II and Type IV sweep frequency event occurred as well as a TenFlare (10.7cm Radio
Burst).

Proton Levels
are on the rise and very close to the S1 Radiaton Storm level.

LASCO C2 - Solar Filament Eruption Friday caused CME not earth directed

Filament Eruption: A solar filament burst during the day on Friday causing a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) off the southeast limb. It does not look to be earth directed.

EPIC Solar Blast - December 6, 2010

EPIC BLAST: As predicted, the a "mega-filament" of solar magnetism erupted on Dec. 6th, producing a blast of epic proportions. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the action as the 700,000-km long structure lifted off the stellar surface and--snap!!--hurled itself into space. Click on the arrow to play the movie:

The eruption produced a bright coronal mass ejection (CME) observed by the STEREO-A spacecraft: video. Earth was not in the line of fire; the cloud should sail wide of our planet. Earth-effects might be limited to pretty pictures.
