Nuke-Hunting Robo-Roaches Enlisted for Animal Army

America’s rapidly expanding cyborg-animal army could soon add a new crawler to its ranks. National Defense magazine reports that scientists in Texas have turned the near-indestructible cockroach into a remote-controlled nuke detector.

A team of nuclear engineers at Texas A&M’s Nuclear Science and Policy Institute attached radioactivity sensors to the backs of cockroaches, meant to scope out different kinds of nuclear material. The cockroaches are remote-controlled, so officials could unleash them into potentially contaminated areas that might not be safe for humans.

The roaches would join an array of non-human war-fighters the Department of Defense seems keen on assembling: already, they’ve floated plans for cyborg spy beetles, flying robo-moths and even killer dolphins, allegedly.

But when it comes to nuke-detection, roaches are ideal candidates - for every reason everyone already hates them: the critters can survive for weeks without food, are nearly impossible to kill, and have invaded every continent except for Antarctica. They can also run non-stop for 35 minutes, and are resilient enough to carry a three-gram back-pod for several months. Oh, and somehow the things are radiation-resistant, too.

“More Empires Have Fallen Because Of Reckless Finances Than Invasion” - Washington Blog

While Eric Margolis' entire comment in the Toronto Sun is a must-read, the following two quotes really hit the nail on the head:

More empires have fallen because of reckless finances than invasion...

If Obama really were serious about restoring America’s economic health, he would demand military spending be slashed, quickly end the Iraq and Afghan wars and break up the nation’s giant Frankenbanks.

Margolis is right.

As I have repeatedly shown, war is bad for the economy. According to a Nobel prize-winning economist, the head of JP Morgan and others, the Iraq war and the war on terror in general were huge factors in destroying our economy.

America is a dying empire, destroying the last of its resources to fight unnecessary wars. Instead of rebuilding our economy so that we can once again be a strong nation, we are wasting trillions fighting those unnecessary wars, thus guaranteeing that we do not have the economic resources to defend ourselves in the future from real threats.

Don't believe me?

Well, our military and intelligence leaders say that the economic crisis is now the biggest threat to America's national security.

And as leading economic historian Niall Ferguson recently wrote in Newsweek:

Call the United States what you like—superpower, hegemon, or empire—but its ability to manage its finances is closely tied to its ability to remain the predominant global military power...

This is how empires decline. It begins with a debt explosion. It ends with an inexorable reduction in the resources available for the Army, Navy, and Air Force...

If the United States doesn't come up soon with a credible plan to restore the federal budget to balance over the next five to 10 years, the danger is very real that a debt crisis could lead to a major weakening of American power. READ MORE

RMN.com | The Iron Triangle - Who Is The Carlyle Group?

WHO IS THE CARLYLE GROUP?

(snip)

It is hard to imagine an address closer to the heart of American power. The offices of the Carlyle Group are on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC, midway between the White House and the Capitol building, and within a stone's throw of the headquarters of the FBI and numerous government departments.

The address reflects Carlyle's position at the very center of the Washington establishment, but amid the frenetic politicking that has occupied the higher reaches of that world in recent weeks, few have paid it much attention. Elsewhere, few have even heard of it.

This is exactly the way Carlyle likes it. For 14 years now, with almost no publicity, the company has been signing up an impressive list of former politicians - including the first President Bush and his secretary of state, James Baker; John Major; one-time World Bank treasurer Afsaneh Masheyekhi and several south-east Asian powerbrokers - and using their contacts and influence to promote the group.

Among the companies Carlyle owns are those which make equipment, vehicles and munitions for the US military, and its celebrity employees have long served an ingenious dual purpose, helping encourage investments from the very wealthy while also smoothing the path for Carlyle's defense firms.

But since the start of the "war on terrorism", the firm - unofficially valued at $13.5bn - has taken on an added significance.

Carlyle has become the thread which indirectly links American military policy in Afghanistan to the personal financial fortunes of its celebrity employees, not least the current president's father.

And, until earlier this month, Carlyle provided another curious link to the Afghan crisis: among the firm's multi-million-dollar investors were members of the family of Osama bin Laden.

The closest the Carlyle Group has previously come to public attention was last May, when a Seoul-based employee called Peter Chung was forced to resign from his £100,000-a-year job after sending an email to friends - subsequently forwarded to thousands of others - boasting of his plans to "f*** every hot chick in Korea over the next two years".

The more business-oriented activities of Carlyle's staff have been conducted much more quietly : since it was founded in 1987 by David Rubenstein, a policy assistant in Jimmy Carter's administration, and two lawyer friends, the firm has been dispatching an array of former world leaders on a series of strategic networking trips.

Last year, George Bush Sr and John Major traveled to Riyadh to talk with senior Saudi businessmen.

In September 2000, Carlyle hired speakers including Colin Powell and AOL Time Warner chair Steve Case to address an extravagant party at Washington's Monarch Hotel.

Months later, Major joined James Baker for a function at the Lanesborough Hotel in London, to explain the Florida election controversy to the wealthy attendees.

We can assume that Carlyle pays well.

Neither Major's office nor Carlyle will confirm the details of his salary as European chairman - an appointment announced shortly .... READ MORE ......

Carlyle to Form Buyout Fund With Beijing Government

(snip)

Jan. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Carlyle Group, the world’s second- largest private-equity firm, said it will set up a domestic Chinese private equity fund with the Beijing government.

The fund, to be registered in China’s capital, will be established by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Financial Work and Carlyle Asia Partners, Carlyle said in an e-mailed statement.

The yuan-denominated fund will be entitled to “preferential treatment” from the government, it said.

Carlyle follows Blackstone Group LP, which became the first global private-equity firm to set up a 5 billion yuan ($731 million) fund with the Shanghai government in August to target investments in the eastern coastal city and neighboring areas.

China is stepping up efforts to build its own private equity industry as the government seeks to foster corporate governance and strengthen capital markets.

“You’ll see this trend continue with more global private equity titans seeking to raise domestic money in China with government-backed institutions,” said Alfred Lam, research associate at the Asian Venture Capital Journal.

“It helps deal sourcing and capital is more readily available than in other parts of the world.”

The Carlyle Asia Partners renminbi fund will invest alongside the Asia buyout group of Carlyle, which signed a memorandum of understanding with the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Financial Work, and pursue independent investments, according to the statement.

WHO IS THE RAND CORPORATION

In May 1948, RAND was incorporated as a not-for-profit entity independent of Douglas, but it continued to receive the bulk of its funding from the Air Force.

The think tank did, however, begin to accept extensive support from the Ford Foundation, marking it as a quintessential member of the American establishment.

Collbohm stayed on as chief executive officer until 1966, when he was forced out in the disputes then raging within the Pentagon between the Air Force and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara.

McNamara's "whiz kids" were Defense intellectuals, many of whom had worked at RAND and were determined to restructure the armed forces to cut costs and curb interservice rivalries.

Always loyal to the Air Force and hostile to the whiz kids, Collbohm was replaced by Henry S. Rowan, an MIT-educated engineer turned economist and strategist who was himself forced to resign during the Ellsberg-Pentagon Papers scandal.

Collbohm and other pioneer managers at Douglas gave RAND its commitment to interdisciplinary work and limited its product to written reports, avoiding applied or laboratory research, or actual manufacturing.

RAND's golden age of creativity lasted from approximately 1950 to 1970.

During that period its theorists worked diligently on such new analytical techniques and inventions as systems analysis, game theory, reconnaissance satellites, the Internet, advanced computers, digital communications, missile defense, and intercontinental ballistic missiles.

During the 1970s, RAND began to turn to projects in the civilian world, such as health financing systems, insurance, and urban governance.

RAND CORPORATION Lobbies Pentagon For War To Save US Economy:

(snip)

For those of you unfamiliar with the RAND Corporation (RAND coming from research and development), it is a think tank created after World War II to advise the US military.

It was a key player in formulating the US’s policy during the Cold War and developing the US military industrial complex.

RAND’s board of directors includes Frank Charles Carlucci III, former Defence Secretary and Deputy Director of the CIA.

Carlucci was chairman of the Carlyle Group from 1989-2005 and oversaw gargantuan profits the defense contractor made in the aftermath of 9/11 following the invasion of Afghanistan.

The same Carlyle group that “Pappi” Bush now works for. For more on RAND look here. It’s supposed to be an NGO, but in fact proposes policy that will result in huge profits for it’s war mongering associates.

War is openly being considered as a viable commodity. An economic tool to get the country out of a recession.

All this is made even more scary by both presidential candidates hostile views towards Iran (remember McCain’s “Bomb Iran” song) and the fact that Debkafile, an Isreali website that reports on intelligence, terrorism, politics and military issues in the Middle East, have reported that both McCain and Obama have been given a guideline to prepare for a major international crisis soon after the elections.

At this point it’s worth noting that Debkafile predicted in 2000 that Al’Qaeda - (literally meaning “the base”, as it referred to the data base containing Mujahadin trained by the CIA during the Russian occupation of Afghanistan in the ‘80s ) - would strike the World Trade Center.

Even Joe Biden, Obama’s running mate, has said “It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy,” and “Watch, we’re going to have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy”.

Pirate Update - January 14, 2010

Pirate attacks up sharply in 2009

“As of Dec 31, suspected Somali pirates held 12 vessels for ransom with 263 crew-members of various nationalities as hostages,” the report said.

World Powers Not Interested in Combating Pirates - a cover for military exercises

“That is only a cover for the public. They have the weapons to wipe the pirates from the face of the earth, and most of the limitations are of a legal nature” said Tabak.

He says that the recent American and French attacks on pirates cannot solve anything.

“They kill three pirates and open the way for another thirty. Somalia is the blackest hole without a doubt” said Tabak.

He considers that serious operations against the pirates will occur only when the insurance premiums go up.

“When piracy raises the insurance premiums and when it seriously starts to get in the way, then it will be combated, and that will occur very fast” concluded the military analyst. READ MORE

Blackwater - now Xe - key part of President Barack Obama's strategy for stabilizing Afghanistan

January 9, 2010

WASHINGTON – Blackwater Worldwide's legal woes haven't dimmed the company's prospects in Afghanistan, where it's a contender to be a key part of President Barack Obama's strategy for stabilizing the country.

Now called Xe Services, the company is in the running for a Pentagon contract potentially worth $1 billion to train Afghanistan's troubled national police force. Xe has been shifting to training, aviation and logistics work after its security guards were accused of killing unarmed Iraqi civilians more than two years ago.

Yet even with a new name and focus, the expanded role would seem an unlikely one for Xe because Democrats have held such a negative opinion of the company following the Iraqi deaths, which are still reverberating in Baghdad and Washington.

During the presidential campaign, then-Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, now Obama's secretary of state, backed legislation to ban Blackwater and other private security contractors from Iraq.

Xe eventually lost its license to operate as guardian of U.S. diplomats in Iraq and the State Department, with Clinton at the helm, elected not to rehire the company when the contract expired in 2009. Delays in getting a new company in place led to a temporary extension of the State contract.

A federal judge on New Year's Eve dismissed criminal charges against five of the Blackwater guards, citing repeated missteps by federal prosecutors. The Iraqi government has vowed to pursue the case, a new strain on relations between the U.S. and Iraq.

Xe on Wednesday reached a settlement in a series of civil lawsuits in which dozens of Iraqis accused the company of cultivating a reckless culture that allowed innocent civilians to be killed. On Thursday, however, two former Blackwater contractors were arrested on murder charges in the shootings of two Afghans after a traffic accident last year.

Despite the scrutiny, the U.S. relies heavily on Xe — pronounced "zee" — for support in Afghanistan and the workload may grow significantly.

Xe spokesman Mark Corallo declined to comment on whether the company, based in Moyock, N.C., is bidding for the Afghan police training contract. But a U.S. official knowledgeable of the deliberations said Xe is competing. The official requested anonymity to discuss sensitive information about the federal contracting process. READ MORE ...

U.S., NATO Expand Afghan War To Horn Of Africa And Indian Ocean

Global Research, January 8, 2010
In parallel with the escalation of the war in South Asia - counterinsurgency operations in Afghanistan and drone missile attacks in Pakistan - the United States and its NATO allies have laid the groundwork for increased naval, air and ground operations in the Horn of Africa and the Gulf of Aden.

During the past month the U.S. has carried out deadly military strikes in Yemen: Bombing raids in the north and cruise missile attacks in the south of the nation. Washington has been accused of killing scores of civilians in the attacks in both parts of the country, executed before the December 25 Northwest Airlines incident that has been used to justify the earlier U.S. actions ex post facto. And, ominously, that has been exploited to pound a steady drumbeat of demands for expanded and even more direct military intervention.

The Pentagon's publicly disclosed military and security program for Yemen grew from $4.6 million in 2006 to $67 million last year. "That figure does not include covert, classified assistance that the United States has provided." [1]

In addition, "Under a new classified cooperation agreement, the U.S. would be able to fly cruise missiles, fighter jets or unmanned armed drones against targets in the country, but would remain publicly silent on its role in the airstrikes." [2]

On January 1 General David Petraeus, the chief of the Pentagon's Central Command, in charge of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as operations in Yemen and Pakistan, was in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad and said of deepening military involvement in Yemen, "We have, it's well known, about $70 million in security assistance last year. That will more than double this coming year." [3]

The following day Petraeus was in the capital of Yemen where he met with the country's president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, to discuss "continued U.S. support in rooting out the terrorist cells." [4]

White House counterterrorism adviser (Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism) John Brennan briefed President Barack Obama on Petraeus' visit to Washington's new war theater and afterward stated "We have made Yemen a priority over the course of this year, and this is the latest in that effort." [5]

The alleged terrorist cells in question are identified by U.S. and other Western governments as being affiliated with al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). However, on January 4 CNN reported that "A senior U.S. official cited a rebellion by Huti [Houthi] tribes in the north, and secessionist activity in the southern tribal areas" as of concern to Washington. [6]

The Houthis' confessional background is Shi'a and not Sunni Islam and the opposition forces in the south are led by the Yemeni Socialist Party, so attempts to link either with al-Qaeda are inaccurate, self-serving and dishonest.
