A tornado touched down in western Oklahoma early Monday evening in the Hammon area, tearing the roofs off at least five homes and damaging other structures, state emergency officials said. Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management spokeswoman Michelann Ooten said there were no initial reports of any injuries with the storm, which was first spotted about 5:15 p.m. Monday. The storm traveled north of Elk City, which is about 110 miles west of Oklahoma City. Hammon is about 15 miles north of Elk City. Early reports indicated damage throughout areas of Roger Mills County around Hammon. The Roger Mills County Sheriff's Office reported that the county barn was destroyed in the storm, leaving behind significant debris.

Oklahoma Has Biggest Deficit Among States

Oklahoma has the unwanted distinction of having the largest revenue shortfall of any state, according to a new report. That reality is illustrated by the state's revenue collections, which are down by more than 25 percent from a year ago.

The state last week ordered yet another round of cuts, this time instructing agencies to cut 10 percent from their budgets.

A November state budget report by the National Conference of State Legislatures says Oklahoma's 18.5 percent shortfall for the current fiscal year edges out Arizona's 18 percent, with Illinois in third at 16.5 percent.The report says states have lopped $145.9 billion from their fiscal year 2010 budgets compared with 2009. For most states, the fiscal year begins on July 1.

In addition, 36 states have reported additional shortfalls for 2010 totaling $28.2 billion....

Unexplainable earthquakes continue to hit Oklahoma County, OK - another quake hit Sunday morning 16 mi ENE of Oklahoma City - December 13, 2009

OKLAHOMA CITY - December 13, 2009 - For the second time in three days, an earthquake shook homes in Oklahoma County.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, it happened Sunday morning around 3 just two miles north of Jones. It measured 3.4 magnitude.

Eyewitness News 5 received several phone calls from viewers who said they felt it in Jones and Midwest City. One woman said her lamp fell over.

Another mild earthquake hit near Spencer early Saturday. A similar quake hit Friday near Arcadia.

Scientists have not been able to explain why so many quakes have hit Oklahoma County in the past few years.

2.7 earthquake shakes Central Virginia

November 25, 2009 - At News 7's Lynchburg Newsroom, a number of viewers called and said they felt the earthquake along the Route 29 corridor, near the Amherst/Nelson County line.

The epicenter was many miles away, but residents say they felt like the center was right underneath them.

Holly Jones was reading a book in the kitchen when her attention was shaken to something else. "Suddenly, I just heard this loud kind of noise and felt the foundation of the house shaking," says Holly Jones, who felt the earthquake. Her mother Sandy was in the next room. "I heard this horrible noise and it sounded to me like something had blown up in the basement," says Sandy Jones, who also felt it. Both Sandy and Holly thought the washing machine had exploded. "I had been doing laundry and I thought, well there goes the washing machine, but maybe we better get out of here, because it was so loud and it went on so long." In a house where the Thanksgiving dinner table is already set, there were moments of confusion and unease. "It kind of startled me more afterwards. I was really feeling kind of scared," said Holly "I know it probably didn't last as long as it seemed, to me I thought it just kept going," says Sandy Jones.

Down the road, strange rumbles brought Veryl Campbell to her front yard. "Then, all of a sudden it was a thud, and I thought oh!" She worried it was coming from the church next door. "I thought 'oh my gosh, somebody has run into the side of the house!'" says Campbell. She soon realized her house was fine. "I was relieved that it was an earthquake," says Campbell.

"It was a minor earthquake," says Gary Roakes, Amherst County Director of Public Safety. Roakes says Amherst 911 was flooded with calls. "Fortunately, this was just a small earthquake that just startled people because it's one of those things that people aren't aware of. They don't think of it happening here," says Roakes.

Back at the Jones house, there's no sign of an earthquake. Pictures on the wall and plates on the bookshelf never moved. The only thing that shook was a plant on the fridge. "I wouldn't want to experience anything more, because I know this house has a pretty solid foundation and it was definitely shaking," says Sandy Jones.

Emergency officials in Nelson, Amherst, and Appomattox counties say there haven't been any reports of major damage or serious injury.
