Fed Under Fire | A rare bipartisan movement in Congress demands that the Fed be held accountable

The Federal Reserve is one of the most powerful and secretive institutions in Washington, long considered beyond the reach of lawmakers. But now, as details emerge of how the Fed secretly doled out more than a trillion dollars during the financial crisis, a rare bipartisan movement in Congress demands that the Fed be held accountable.

New Economy - Mythical or real one | There is no economy left to recover. US manufacturing economy was lost to offshoring and free trade ideology

New Economy - Mythical or real one
http://thenexteconomy.blogspot.com/
Can The Economy Recover?
Paul Craig Roberts

There is no economy left to recover. The US manufacturing economy was lost to offshoring and free trade ideology. It was replaced by a mythical "New Economy."

The "New Economy" was based on services. Its artificial life was fed by the Federal Reserve's artificially low interest rates, which produced a real estate bubble, and by "free market" financial deregulation, which unleashed financial gangsters to new heights of debt leverage and fraudulent financial products.

The real economy was traded away for a make-believe economy. When the make-believe economy collapsed, Americans' wealth in their real estate, pensions, and savings collapsed dramatically while their jobs disappeared.

The debt economy caused Americans to leverage their assets. They refinanced their homes and spent the equity. They maxed out numerous credit cards. They worked as many jobs as they could find. Debt expansion and multiple family incomes kept the economy going.

And now suddenly Americans can't borrow in order to spend. They are over their heads in debt. Jobs are disappearing. America's consumer economy, approximately 70% of GDP, is dead. Those Americans who still have jobs are saving against the prospect of job loss. Millions are homeless. Some have moved in with family and friends; others are living in tent cities.

Meanwhile the US government's budget deficit has jumped from $455 billion in 2008 to $2,000 billion this year, with another $2,000 billion on the books for 2010. And President Obama has intensified America's expensive war of aggression in Afghanistan and initiated a new war in Pakistan.

There is no way for these deficits to be financed except by printing money or by further collapse in stock markets that would drive people out of equity into bonds.

The US government's budget is 50% in the red. That means half of every dollar the federal government spends must be borrowed or printed. Because of the worldwide debacle caused by Wall Street's financial gangsterism, the world needs its own money and hasn't $2 trillion annually to lend to Washington.

As dollars are printed, the growing supply adds to the pressure on the dollar's role as reserve currency. Already America's largest creditor, China, is admonishing Washington to protect China's investment in US debt and lobbying for a new reserve currency to replace the dollar before it collapses. According to various reports, China is spending down its holdings of US dollars by acquiring gold and stocks of raw materials and energy.

The price of one ounce gold coins is $1,000 despite efforts of the US government to hold down the gold price. How high will this price jump when the rest of the world decides that the bankruptcy of "the world's only superpower" is at hand?

And what will happen to America's ability to import not only oil, but also the manufactured goods on which it is import-dependent?

When the over-supplied US dollar loses the reserve currency role, the US will no longer be able to pay for its massive imports of real goods and services with pieces of paper. Overnight, shortages will appear and Americans will be poorer.

Nothing in Presidents Bush and Obama's economic policy addresses the real issues. Instead, Goldman Sachs was bailed out, more than once. As Eliot Spitzer said, the banks made a "bloody fortune" with US aid.

It was not the millions of now homeless homeowners who were bailed out. It was not the scant remains of American manufacturing - General Motors and Chrysler - that were bailed out. It was the Wall Street Banks.

According to Bloomberg.com, Goldman Sachs' current record earnings from their free or low cost capital supplied by broke American taxpayers has led the firm to decide to boost compensation and benefits by 33 percent. On an annual basis, this comes to compensation of $773,000 per employee.

This should tell even the most dimwitted patriot who "their" government represents.

The worst of the economic crisis has not yet hit. I don't mean the rest of the real estate crisis that is waiting in the wings. Home prices will fall further when the foreclosed properties currently held off the market are dumped. Store and office closings are adversely impacting the ability of owners of shopping malls and office buildings to make their mortgage payments. Commercial real estate loans were also securitized and turned into derivatives.

The real crisis awaits us. It is the crisis of high unemployment, of stagnant and declining real wages confronted with rising prices from the printing of money to pay the government's bills and from the dollar's loss of exchange value. Suddenly, Wal-Mart prices will look like Nieman Marcus prices.

Retirees dependent on state pension systems, which cannot print money, might not be paid, or might be paid with IOUs. They will not even have depreciating money with which to try to pay their bills. Desperate tax authorities will squeeze the remaining life out of the middle class.

Nothing in Obama's economic policy is directed at saving the US dollar as reserve currency or the livelihoods of the American people. Obama's policy, like Bush's before him, is keyed to the enrichment of Goldman Sachs and the armament industries.

Matt Taibbi describes Goldman Sachs as "a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentless jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money." Look at the Goldman Sachs representatives in the Clinton, Bush and Obama administrations. This bankster firm controls the economic policy of the United States.

Little wonder that Goldman Sachs has record earnings while the rest of us grow poorer by the day.

A rising tide of social misery

List of Shills for the Fed

Shills for the Fed

Lew Rockwell
LRC Blog
July 16, 2009

Here’s another proof that the anti-Fed movement is gaining new ground: a long list of prominent economists–many of them recipients of Fed preferment and largesse, of course–who say, in effect, “Don’t question the central bank!” They actually claim that questioning the Fed can lead to inflation, when they all endorse it in their teaching and writing. The Fed was founded to inflate; it exists to inflate. These economists claim inflation — a constant increase in the money supply — is necessary to economic growth, when it is the greatest enemy of prosperity ever invented by the state and its friends, like these economists. It is even more damaging than direct state looting, that is, taxation, since inflation distorts economic calculation. Of course, by strengthening the state and its allies, inflation has benefited men and women like this, but not the producers in society. Ron Paul’s Audit the Fed bill, the progress of which alarms these members of the power elite, is a reflection of a change in the climate of opinion. So is this ad, which the Fed obviously requested through its new lobbyists. And folks, we haven’t seen anything yet, both in establishment demonization of Fed opponents, and in decline in its tacit support among the people. Look forward to this battle. It is one we will win, thanks to the great Austrian economists. Rothbard, thou should’st be living at this hour!

In Italy, hundreds of desperate people are prepared to sell their own organs to raise money for their families

Disturbing organs trade in Italy

16 July, 2009, 09:41

The struggle for cash is taking a sinister turn in Italy, as hundreds of desperate people are prepared to sell their own organs to raise money for their families.

The shop windows of the streets of central Rome – among the most famous shopping passages in Europe – are showing off their merchandise, but hide the reality of the economic crisis that is forcing many to desperate measures.

The crisis-stricken people of Italy are being forced to sell their cars, homes and businesses. But for many, even that is not enough. And the metaphorical cost of an arm and a leg has become a gruesome reality, as people exploit one of the darkest demands of the black market.

A typical announcement over the web sounds like this “I am a 48-year-old craftsman and father of three little girls. My job no longer brings in enough money. I need at least 50,000 euros to cover my debts. I am willing to sell a kidney, or a part of my liver. Help me, I pray of you.”

This story is one of many, as Italy's leading daily La Repubblica found out. Hundreds of ads can be found in blogs where Italians offer their organs as a last resort.

Despite the fact that selling organs is illegal in Italy, the trade is growing.

“We never knew there was an illegal offer for organs, in exchange for money. It’s a symptom of the economic situation, which is very dark. And we did not realize – our institution did not realize – that the situation is really this bad,” says Maurizio Torrealta, an investigative journalist for RAI 24.

But doctors across the country are convinced such a level of sales is simply impossible.

“There are many people who think they could sell parts of their body and they offer that, as it was described in the paper, and I agree with the journalists that this phenomenon is increasing, and probably is somehow connected with the crisis. But these are only proposals,” Alessandro Nanni Costa, chief surgeon of the National Transplant Centre stresses.

Doctors are coming across such cases more and more frequently.

“We receive mails twice a week, from people offering to sell us their organs, which are clearly illegal proposals. But these are people who need to be helped, since they are trying to do something which is impossible in Italy,” explains Alessandro Nanni Costa.

This is why willing donors travel to Eastern European countries like Bulgaria and Romania or sometimes, Israel and the Palestine to get the surgery done.

And with a kidney fetching up to €30,000, the supply of people willing to go to this black market as a way out of their financial troubles looks set to increase.

Flu shots may not prevent hospitalizations in children -- The inactivated flu vaccine does not appear to be effective in preventing influenza-related hospitalizations in children, especially the ones with asthma. In fact, children who get the flu vaccine are more at risk for hospitalization than their peers who do not get the vaccine, according to new research that will be presented on Tuesday, May 19, at the 105th International Conference of the American Thoracic Society in San Diego.

CDC: Kids may get up to 4 flu shots in the fall -- School children who have never had a flu shot may need to get vaccinated four times in the fall - twice for seasonal flu, twice for pandemic swine flu - officials at the CDC told health professionals on Wednesday. Most everyone else should expect three shots.

Another example of censorship of US mainstream media - Cynthia McKinney detention in Israel -- Cynthia McKinney and 20 other humanitarians on the ship "Spirit of Humanity" were stopped in International waters Monday by the Israeli Navy. This is a pretty big deal. An aid ship captured by the armed forces of another country in International waters is an act of piracy...I think. At least it was when Somali pirates captured an American ship recently. It appears that the U.S. Mainstream media is going to ignore this story even though Cynthia McKinney was once a Congresswoman from Georgia and a Presidential candidate. How odd.

News.MK.Co.Kr | Korean Cyber Attacks Traced to U.S.

A malware denial-of-service (DDoS) attack against South Korean websites earlier this month was revealed to have come from a master server in the U.S.

The U.K.-based Internet protocol TV platform Global Digital Broadcast (GDB), known as the company owning the IP address of the master server, on July 16 traced the attacks to a VPN connection originating in Miami, Florida.

A VPN connection in Miami is controlled by the data center at, Digital Latin America (DLA), a Buenos Aires-based digital content provider.

GDB conveyed, “We’ve investigated the attacks and it seems like a program called an ‘exploit finder’ has created zombie networks that had caused DDoS attacks.”

An open-source program ‘exploit finder’ which interconnects Internet software programs is frequently used by hackers for attacks.

RSOE Emergency and Disaster Information Service | A flea from a Westminster, Jefferson County, Colorado dog park tested positive for Bubonic plague

RSOE Emergency and Disaster Information Service

Budapest, Hungary

Situation Update No. 1
On 16.07.2009 at 03:15 GMT+2

Plague has hit a popular dog park in Jefferson County. Jeffco health officials have not found any humans infected with the plague, but flea specimens with plague have been collected at Westminster Hills Open Space Dog Park, West 105th Avenue and Simms Street, according to the Jefferson County Department of Health and Environment. Health officials suggest that nearby residents and those who visit the park take precautions to protect themselves and their pets. The area was closed to the public today and posted with plague warning signs. "There have been no reported human cases of plague in the area, and if precautions are taken, the disease is not considered to be a threat to humans," said Jim Dale, director of environmental-health services. Cats most commonly contract the disease from flea bites, a rodent scratch or bite, or ingestion of a rodent. Dogs are generally resistant to plague, however they may pick up and carry plague-infected fleas, the release said. Humans may be infected with plague through bites from infected fleas, by the coughing of an infected animal, or by direct contact — through a bite — with blood or tissues of infected animals. People can protect themselves and their pets from plague by rodent-proofing their homes; maintaining litter and trash-free environments; storing food and garbage properly to prevent rodent access; and keeping domesticated animals indoors. If pets are outside, owners should protect them by using insect repellant and flea-control products and keeping them on leashes. Residents also should talk with their veterinarian about effective flea-control products and procedures.

A flea from a Westminster dog park has tested positive for Bubonic plague. Jefferson County Public Health received the test results Wednesday. The flea was taken from a prairie dog die-off at the Westminster Hills Open Space/Dog Park at 105th Avenue and Simms Street. "The area of concern includes the entire dog park and open space area from Simms Street west to Indiana Street," a news release from Nancy Braden, the public information officer for the Jefferson County Health Department. The health department recommended that everyone living in or visiting the area in and around the Westminster Hills Open Space/Dog Park take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their pets from plague. The affected area at the park has been closed to the public and posted with warning signs. "There have been no reported human cases of plague in the area and if precautions are taken the disease is not considered to be a threat to humans," said Dr. Jim Dale, Director of Environmental Health Services. Cats most commonly contract the disease from flea bites, a rodent scratch/bite, or ingestion of a rodent. Dogs are generally resistant to plague however, they may pick up and carry plague-infected fleas. Humans may be infected with plague through bites from infected fleas, by the cough from an infected animal, or by direct contact with infected animals. When outside, pet owners should use insect repellant, keep their pets on leashes, and use flea control products on pets. If these precautions are taken, the probability of contracting plague is extremely low. Symptoms of plague in humans occur within two to seven days after exposure. Those infected may experience fever, headache, weakness and rapidly developing pneumonia with shortness of breath; chest pain; cough; and sometimes bloody or watery saliva. The pneumonia progresses for two-to-four days and may cause respiratory failure and shock. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should consult a physician.)

Some Guantanamo Bay Prisoners May Be Held Indefinitely --DoD lawyer: Any detainee, even if acquitted, could be held indefinitely 10 Jul 2009 An Obama administration official told Senators Tuesday that some detainees at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility will most likely be held indefinitely if they pose a threat. The official spoke at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing... At a Senate hearing, Defense Department lawyer Jeh Johnson described one group of prisoners that will remain behind bars. "There will be at the end of the review a category of people that we in the administration believe must be retained for reasons of public safety and national security, and they're not necessarily people that we'll prosecute," Johnson said. Johnson also said any detainee, even if acquitted, could be held indefinitely. "And we've gone through our review period and we've made through the assessment the person is a security threat....I think it's our view that we would have the ability to detain that person," Johnson said.

US military resumes Guantanamo tribunals 16 Jul 2009 The US military has resumed the controversial Guantanamo tribunals for the first time in months with a series of pretrial hearings. The US President Barack Obama suspended the proceedings shortly after taking office in January but announced in May that some of the cases would continue, drawing criticism from human rights activists. On Wednesday, prosecutors sought delays pending a review in the cases of three defendants, said Joe DellaVedova, a Spokesman for the Military Commissions at the US naval installation in Cuba.

CIA death squads 'copied Mossad' 15 Jul 2009 Former US officials claim CIA was to hire assassination teams modeled after the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad's targeted killing specialist squads. On Tuesday, Newsweek quoted some former senior officials as saying that in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, the former administration approached the Central Intelligence Agency to form the teams. The officials, requesting anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue, said the White House broached the issue with CIA's espionage wing, the Directorate of Operations.

U.S. Lawyers Won't Defend Ex-Bush Attorney in Torture-Memo Case 14 Jul 2009 Justice Department attorneys will no longer defend former Bush administration lawyer John Yoo, who wrote memos justifying harsh interrogations torture of suspected terrorists, in a lawsuit claiming he’s responsible for violating the constitutional rights of a detainee prisoner. Private lawyers paid by the Justice Department will represent Yoo, who is appealing a federal judge’s refusal to throw out the lawsuit, according to court filings and a Justice Department spokeswoman.

Obama Claims Immunity, As New Spy Case Takes Center Stage 15 Jul 2009 The latest legal volley attacking President [sic] George W. Bush’s once-secret electronic eavesdropping dragnet gets its first court hearing here Wednesday, nearly four years after the warrantless surveillance program was revealed. The Jewel v. NSA lawsuit was filed in September by the Electronic Frontier Foundation. It responded to 2008 federal legislation that immunized the nation’s telecommunications companies from suits challenging their complicity in the President's Surveillance Program.

Israeli soldiers in Gaza describe a 'moral Twilight Zone' 14 Jul 2009 Israeli combat soldiers have acknowledged that they forced Palestinian civilians to serve as human shields, needlessly killed unarmed Gazans and improperly used white phosphorus shells to burn down buildings as part of Israel's three-week military offensive in the Gaza Strip last winter. In filmed testimony and written statements released Wednesday, more than two dozen soldiers told an Israeli army veterans' group that military commanders led the fighters into what one described as a "moral Twilight Zone" where almost every Palestinian was seen as a threat.

Israel soldiers speak out on Gaza 15 Jul 2009 A group of soldiers who took part in Israel's assault in Gaza say widespread abuses were committed against civilians under "permissive" rules of engagement. Afghanistan: 'Britain is backing the Taleban' 16 Jul 2009 Despite the grim toll of British soldiers' bodies coming home in coffins, many Afghans believe British troops have been helping the Taleban. "Of course we think they are supporting the Taleban," said shopkeeper Saad Alikhi in Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand province. "When the international troops first came here, they cleaned up all the Taleban, all over Afghanistan, within a month. Now I find there's a mine exploding in front of my shop." Security has plummeted across Helmand since UK troops arrived three years ago, and ordinary people have watched the Taleban grow stronger. Many are struggling to understand why Britain, with all the might of Nato and the United States behind it, has failed to beat the ragtag Taleban militia. [Because: It's not profitable for US/UK mercenary firms and corpora-terrorists to exit. More money can be made via their illegal occupation of Afghanistan.]

And now the hardest working conservative Democrat in show business has a new gig: lobbying against the Honduran leader recently deposed in a military coup.

Ex-Clinton aides advising Honduran coup regime By Bill Van Auken 15 Jul 2009 Ever since the military abducted President Manuel Zelaya at gunpoint on June 28 and expelled him from the country, the Obama administration has cast itself as a steadfast defender of "democracy" in Honduras. The real nature of that defense has become somewhat clearer with the news that key former aides to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, have surfaced as top advisers to the illegal regime led by Roberto Micheletti, which was installed by the coup.

'I hope we don't see the 1918 picture.' Swine flu will be biggest pandemic ever, warns world health chief 16 Jul 2009 How does Margaret Chan, director-general of the World Health Organisation, expect the flu pandemic to compare to other pandemics? "In terms of the number of countries affected and the number of people infected, this has got to be the biggest." Bigger than 1918? "If you're talking about mortality then it's different. 1918 is the biggest in terms of mortality. I would not like to make any predictions... I hope we don't see the 1918 picture. But we should expect to see more people infected, and more severe cases coming up, including deaths."

Experts unearth history of pandemic flu viruses 14 Jul 2009 Flu viruses that sparked the three worst pandemics in the last century circulated in their near-complete forms for years before the catastrophes occurred, researchers in Hong Kong and the United States have found. The H1N1 virus that sparked the Spanish flu of 1918-1919 circulated in swine and humans well before the pandemic started, and it did not come directly from birds as previously thought, they added. Instead, it was probably generated by genetic exchanges between flu viruses from swine and humans. This contrasts sharply with previous studies which suggested that the H1N1 virus of 1918 was a mutant that jumped direct from birds to human and ended up killing as many as 50 million people.

Yet nine months after saying, "I do," Schaumburg has called the whole thing off, citing no improvements in safety and a flood of angry-motorist grief, after red-light cameras at the village's lone picture-snapping intersection netted more than $1 million in tickets.

The 44th president threw out the ceremonial first pitch, something no one in office had done since Gerald Ford at the 1976 All-Star Game in Philadelphia.

The previously undisclosed C.I.A. list includes key Qaeda leaders like Osama bin Laden and his chief deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri, as well as other principal figures from Al Qaeda and affiliated terrorist groups, the officials said.
