Independent.co.uk | The collapse of an economy that was built on sand - The spectre of default in Dubai has serious implications for us all

Friday, 27 November 2009

In the years of the boom, Dubai set about building with an ambition that would have made even Ozymandias blush. Artificial islands full of luxury villas, the world's tallest tower, an underwater hotel, even a stone-by-stone recreation of the French city of Lyon – no project was too extravagant, some would say vulgar, for the construction magnates of the emirate.

But this was a project built on the shifting sands of credit. Foreign capital poured into Dubai as its ruler, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, set about turning his nation into the financial, tourist and sporting hub of the Gulf. In less than a decade, Dubai managed to accumulate foreign liabilities of $80bn. Some estimates put it still higher. Full Article

The China Post | National Taiwan University (NTU) develops a microchip to be inserted as pain reliever

Thursday, November 26, 2009 9:28 am TWN, The China Post

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A research team headed by National Taiwan University (NTU) has created a microchip that can be inserted into your body and alleviate pain through the swipe of a cell phone-sized device.

At only NT$10 a piece, the microchip is said to possess healing properties that provide chronic pain relief for up to three months per "swipe." The chip will help those who suffer from bone spurs, trigeminal nerve injuries, painful amputation stumps and sports injuries.

The landmark device will reportedly be ready for public use in two years time.

The innovative project was a collaborative effort by the NTU Graduate Institute of Electronics Engineering and Institute of Biomedical Engineering, National Taipei University of Technology as well as scholars and doctors from the Chungshing Hospital and Shin Kong Wu Ho-su Memorial Hospital. The nanomaterials used in the microchip technology were provided by the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited. Full Article

Telegraph.co.uk | Hundreds evacuated as Pacific volcano erupts on Vanuatu

More than 300 villagers were evacuated in the Pacific nation of Vanuatu after an erupting volcano started spewing smoke and ash on to their homes.

Published: 12:39PM GMT 26 Nov 2009

Residents were loaded onto fishing boats and shipped to the far side of Gaua island after the volcano, which has been rumbling for the past two months, started erupting.

"They'
re evacuating people to the other side of the island. The volcano was throwing ash in the place they live," said a Red Cross spokesman. He said police and Vanuatu's National Disaster Management Office were overseeing the operation.

The Red Cross is providing water containers and purification tablets for the villagers, who have been hit by respiratory problems and diarrhoea caused by the volcano's pungent sulphur fumes.

The evacuees will have to stay away from their villages until the volcano subsides, the official said.

The area has been put on the second highest alert level, reports said.
Gaua, about 9,800 feet high, has erupted 13 times since 1963, tourism officials say. Vanuatu is on the "Pacific Ring of Fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.

StanDeyo.com | Thanksgiving Day - November 26, 2009

We wish you and your family a Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving holiday. Even though there is much turmoil in the world, never lose sight of the Big Picture. We are here but for a brief time before the Lord puts everything right. Stand strong in Him and be encouraged.
- Stan & Holly

THANKSGIVING DAY

Deyo Note:

As one reader pointed out, there are many worthwhile charities, but it is primarily the larger ones that receive huge attention. It is not our intention to overlook anyone, but there are literally thousands of them sprinkled across the Nation. Many are too poor or too busy to maintain websites.

Please help your smaller local charitable agencies where you can. Often they are the backbone and saving grace of communities that are overlooked by national groups. This is especially true for animal shelters. Many people donate their time to keep these facilities open. They run their programs on minuscule budgets, mostly through donations.

When I lived in northern Colo., the Safeways always maintained a 6'x6'x3' wooden donation box where people could contribute pet food or cash. It was a personal joy to help out. Sorry to say, this tradition has not appeared here in southern Colo.

The other day Stan and I were in the veggie department of a national grocery chain. We watched the produce manager pluck various foods off tables and chuck them into a cart. We asked where all the borderline fruits and veggies went once close to their "best by" date. He shared that they all went into TRASH. Throw out. Wasted. Not even saved for compost.

Why can't it go to the poor? To soup kitchens? To needy families? He replied that it used to, that their stores yearly gave away millions of pounds of still-good food. However, one person had picked up a sandwich from their store, which that person left out on his own counter too long and got sick. He then sued the store. As company policy now, this chain can no longer donate any still-viable food and this was all due to the actions of one individual. We have a truly valuable resource here that could help feed literally millions of hungry Americans going to waste. How sad is that.

In the flurry of holiday celebrations, feasting and gift giving, it is often the poor, hungry and homeless – 2-legged and 4-legged alike – who are most overlooked. Please remember to give where you can. It will be the best gift you ever receive.

Rense.com | New Study Shows Ten States Face Fiscal Crisis

By Stephen Lendman
11-25-9

The Pew Center on the States (PCS) "works to advance state policies that serve the public interest," through "credible research (to) advance nonpartisan, pragmatic solutions for pressing problems affecting Americans." Its new report titled, "Beyond California: States in Fiscal Peril," says the following:

"Many economists are optimistic that America's Great Recession may be turning the corner. States, however, are not celebrating. Plagued by record-setting revenue losses, the housing bust and credit crisis, high unemployment and a host of other challenges, (they've) struggled through nearly two years of budgetary pain - and are bracing for more."

California is worst off, but hardly alone. Others include Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island and Wisconsin. Pew's Managing Director on the States, Susan Urahn, says:

"America's economic recovery and prosperity hinge in key ways on how quickly and to what degree states emerge from the Great Recession." For many, their "fiscal health hangs in the balance."

Telegraph.co.uk | Chile's Mapuche Indians wage war against history

26 Nov 2009 - In his prison cell in Concepción, a town 400 miles south of the Chilean capital Santiago, an indigenous leader dreams of recovering his ancestral lands.

Three Mapuche natives guard their territories
around the little town of Temucuicui, Chile Photo: AFP

The model for the "Mapuche nation" he foresees in the central southern region of Chile is based on the autonomous rule enjoyed by Basques and Catalans in Spain.

But the hurdles he faces are numerous, including governmental opposition that extends to imprisoning him and other militants, and a division among the Mapuche Indian communities about strategy.

"Recovering our land will cost us sweat, blood and tears," Llaitul said.

The 41-year-old leader of the radical indigenous Auroca Malleco Coordination was one of nine militants imprisoned after a 2008 attack against a state prosecutor and police.

Chile charged several of them under anti-terrorist legislation dating from its 1973 to 1990 military dictatorship, which permitted lengthy preventative detention.

InfoWars.com | Dubai Balks at Debt Payment, Rattles Global Markets

Telegraph
November 26, 2009

Stock markets in Germany, France, Spain and Italy were all down about 2pc in early afternoon trading as investors retreated from riskier assets. Investors spent the morning digesting the news that Dubai World, the government investment company with $59bn of liabilities, is seeking to delay repayment on much of its debt. Price for European government bonds rose as investors moved money into safer assets.

“Dubai isn’t doing risk appetite any favours at all and the markets remain in a vulnerable state of mind,” Russell Jones, head of fixed-income and currency research at RBC Capital Markets, told Bloomberg. “We’re still in an environment where we’re vulnerable to financial shocks of any sort and this is one of those.”

The credit default swaps, instruments investors use to protect themselves against a borrower defaulting, linked to Dubai’s debt jumped more than 100 basis points to 571. Fears over Dubai’s finances rippled out to a host of other emerging-market assets, including Russia’s Micex stock index and Vietnam’s currency

On Thanksgiving eve, Obama issues special Hajj message to world's Muslims

Statement by the President on Hajj and Eid-ul-Adha, as provided by the White House

November 25, 2009 - "Michelle and I would like to send our best wishes to all those performing Hajj this year, and to Muslims in America and around the world who are celebrating Eid-ul-Adha. The rituals of Hajj and Eid-ul-Adha both serve as reminders of the shared Abrahamic roots of three of the world’s major religions.

During Hajj, the world’s largest and most diverse gathering, three million Muslims from all walks of life – including thousands of American Muslims – will stand in prayer on Mount Arafat. The following day, Muslims around the world will celebrate Eid-ul-Adha and distribute food to the less fortunate to commemorate Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son out of obedience to God.

This year, I am pleased that the Department of Health and Human Services has partnered with the Saudi Health Ministry to prevent and limit the spread of H1N1 during Hajj. Cooperating on combating H1N1 is one of the ways we are implementing my administration's commitment to partnership in areas of mutual interest.

On behalf of the American people, we would like to extend our greetings during this Hajj season - Eid Mubarak."

Cave Editor's Note: Wikipedia: Eid mubarak is a traditional Muslim greeting reserved for use on the festivals of Eid ul-Adha and Eid ul-Fitr. The phrase translates into English as "blessed festival", and can be paraphrased as "may you enjoy a blessed festival". Muslims wish each other Eid Mubarak after performing the Eid prayer. This celebration continues until the end of the day, and continues a further three days. It is notable that saying these exact words is a cultural tradition influenced by deep roots of religion in it; however, it is not part of any religious obligations. Speakers of Arabic might also add "kul 'am wantum bikhair." Eid refers to the occasion itself, and Mubarak means 'congratulations'.

A World War 2 Veteran sends a letter to Obama – Its a must read for Every American on Thanksgiving, if any Reside at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, There Too

WW II Battleship sailor tells Obama to shape up or ship out !

This venerable and much honored WW II vet is well known in Hawaii for his seventy-plus years of service to patriotic organizations and causes all over the country. A humble man without a political bone in his body, he has never spoken out before about a government official, until now. He dictated this letter to a friend, signed it and mailed it to the president.

Dear President Obama,

My name is Harold Estes, approaching 95 on December 13 of this year. People meeting me for the first time don’t believe my age because I remain wrinkle free and pretty much mentally alert.

I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1934 and served proudly before, during and after WW II retiring as a Master Chief Bos’n Mate. Now I live in a “rest home” located on the western end of Pearl Harbor, allowing me to keep alive the memories of 23 years of service to my country.
One of the benefits of my age, perhaps the only one, is to speak my mind, blunt and direct even to the head man.

So here goes.

I am amazed, angry and determined not to see my country die before I do, but you seem hell bent not to grant me that wish.

I can’t figure out what country you are the president of. You fly around the world telling our friends and enemies despicable lies like: " We’re no longer a Christian nation”

"America is arrogant" – (Your wife even announced to the world, ”America is mean-spirited”. Please tell her to try preaching that nonsense to 23 generations of our war dead buried all over the globe who died for no other reason than to free a whole lot of strangers from tyranny and hopelessness.)

I’d say shame on the both of you, but I don’t think you like America, nor do I see an ounce of gratefulness in anything you do, for the obvious gifts this country has given you. To be without shame or gratefulness is a dangerous thing for a man sitting in the White House.

After 9/11 you said,” America hasn’t lived up to her ideals.”

Which ones did you mean? Was it the notion of personal liberty that 11,000 farmers and shopkeepers died for to win independence from the British? Or maybe the ideal that no man should be a slave to another man, that 500,000 men died for in the Civil War? I hope you didn’t mean the ideal 470,000 fathers, brothers, husbands, and a lot of fellas I knew personally died for in WWII, because we felt real strongly about not letting any nation push us around, because we stand for freedom.

I don’t think you mean the ideal that says equality is better than discrimination. You know the one that a whole lot of white people understood when they helped to get you elected.

Take a little advice from a very old geezer, young man.

Shape up and start acting like an American. If you don’t, I’ll do what I can to see you get shipped out of that fancy rental on Pennsylvania Avenue.

You were elected to lead not to bow, apologize and kiss the hands of murderers and corrupt leaders who still treat their people like slaves.

And just who do you think you are telling the American people not to jump to conclusions and condemn that Muslim major who killed 13 of his fellow soldiers and wounded dozens more. You mean you don’t want us to do what you did when that white cop used force to subdue that black college professor in Massachusetts, who was putting up a fight? You don’t mind offending the police calling them stupid but you don’t want us to offend Muslim fanatics by calling them what they are, terrorists.

One more thing. I realize you never served in the military and never had to defend your country with your life, but you’re the Commander-in- Chief now, son. Do your job. When your battle-hardened field General asks you for 40,000 more troops to complete the mission, give them to him. But if you’re not in this fight to win, then get out. The life of one American soldier is not worth the best political strategy you’re thinking of.

You could be our greatest president because you face the greatest challenge ever presented to any president.

You’re not going to restore American greatness by bringing back our bloated economy. That’s not our greatest threat. Losing the heart and soul of who we are as Americans is our big fight now.

And I sure as hell don’t want to think my president is the enemy in this final battle.

Sincerely,

Harold B. Estes

MedicalNewsToday.com | Global HIV Infections Down 17 Per Cent

November 26, 2009

A new report shows that global new HIV infection rates have fallen by 17 per cent and suggests that HIV prevention programmes are making a difference beyond the natural course of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

2009 AIDS epidemic update was released on Tuesday by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the World Health Organization (WHO) at a press conference in Shanghai.

The drop of 17 per cent reflects new data that shows in some parts of the world such as East Asia, the rate of new HIV infection has dropped by nearly 25 per cent from 2001 to 2008. In South and South East Asia it has dropped by 10 per cent, and in sub-Saharan Africa it has dropped by about 15 per cent, over the same period.

In Eastern Europe it has levelled off, while in some countries it looks like the new HIV infection rate is on the rise again.

Michel Sidibé, Executive Director of UNAIDS, spoke about the good and the bad news highlighted in the report. Full Article

2.7 earthquake shakes Central Virginia

November 25, 2009 - At News 7's Lynchburg Newsroom, a number of viewers called and said they felt the earthquake along the Route 29 corridor, near the Amherst/Nelson County line.

The epicenter was many miles away, but residents say they felt like the center was right underneath them.

Holly Jones was reading a book in the kitchen when her attention was shaken to something else. "Suddenly, I just heard this loud kind of noise and felt the foundation of the house shaking," says Holly Jones, who felt the earthquake. Her mother Sandy was in the next room. "I heard this horrible noise and it sounded to me like something had blown up in the basement," says Sandy Jones, who also felt it. Both Sandy and Holly thought the washing machine had exploded. "I had been doing laundry and I thought, well there goes the washing machine, but maybe we better get out of here, because it was so loud and it went on so long." In a house where the Thanksgiving dinner table is already set, there were moments of confusion and unease. "It kind of startled me more afterwards. I was really feeling kind of scared," said Holly "I know it probably didn't last as long as it seemed, to me I thought it just kept going," says Sandy Jones.

Down the road, strange rumbles brought Veryl Campbell to her front yard. "Then, all of a sudden it was a thud, and I thought oh!" She worried it was coming from the church next door. "I thought 'oh my gosh, somebody has run into the side of the house!'" says Campbell. She soon realized her house was fine. "I was relieved that it was an earthquake," says Campbell.

"It was a minor earthquake," says Gary Roakes, Amherst County Director of Public Safety. Roakes says Amherst 911 was flooded with calls. "Fortunately, this was just a small earthquake that just startled people because it's one of those things that people aren't aware of. They don't think of it happening here," says Roakes.

Back at the Jones house, there's no sign of an earthquake. Pictures on the wall and plates on the bookshelf never moved. The only thing that shook was a plant on the fridge. "I wouldn't want to experience anything more, because I know this house has a pretty solid foundation and it was definitely shaking," says Sandy Jones.

Emergency officials in Nelson, Amherst, and Appomattox counties say there haven't been any reports of major damage or serious injury.

American Thinker | On to Copenhagen for Obama and a climate conference with no real agenda

November 26, 2009

President Obama will attend the Copenhagen climate talks in December, despite the fact that global warming has recently been shown to be a fraud.

According to the the Los Angeles Times Greenspace blog ,

The White House will also announce today that the United States will commit, in the talks, to reduce its emissions of the heat-trapping gases scientists blame for global warming "in the range of" 17 percent below 2005 levels by 2020, the official said. That's the target set out in the climate bill the House passed in June.

[...]

White House officials said the decision to attend came after productive climate discussions between Obama and the heads of China and India, two developing nations whose participation is seen as critical to any successful effort to avert catastrophic climate change."

Apparently, "White House officials" don't read much. The news that global warming is a fraud based on falsified data may not have penetrated the truth-resistant noggins at CNN and other mainstream obamulators, but more credible sources worldwide have it on the front page.

Clearly, Climategate is a story no sensible person dare ignore. Moreover, it's growing, as links between and among data-faking scientists, the United Nations, and complicit government officials in many countries are exposed. Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) yesterday called for an investigation by the Senate Environment and Public Affairs Committee.

Climategate is gaining force, a tsunami of truth poised to strike.

Meanwhile, Obama suns himself on a beach, surrounded by a crowd of admirers. A messenger runs by shouting, ‘There's a wave coming! Get off the beach!" He doesn't even break through the crowd. Obama doesn't even hear him.

Or does he? I can't imagine Obama being so politically incompetent as to let Climategate damage him. I predict the aftermath of the wave of truth will find a a certain "White House official" flattened amongst the wreckage, along with Obama's warmist czars Holdren (science) and Chu (Energy). As Climategate deluges the mainstream media, these and other White House warmists are likely to resign "to spend more time with family" or start a new liberal think tank. What are czars for, if not to take a dunk for The One?

As for Obama himself, I think he'll end up lounging in a cabana, smoking a cigarette and looking out over the drowned bodies of his former advisers ... dry, cool and still in power. So deep is the mainstream media's entrancement over him, I expect it will take more than one tsunami of truth to bring him down. White House media manipulators will convince Obamulatory news organizations to focus on an issue to crowd out climate truth (the Afghan war, the flu, they'll find a front pager), allowing Obama to take cover in the new ‘crisis'.
