San Andreas Fault Beneath Salton Sea

Louisiana’s Port Fourchon is a very important oil hub in the United States. The beaches of the area are receding, leaving the port increasingly open to hurricanes. A large storm could be disastrous.

How Much Gas Do Shale Wells Produce?

In a recent news release from Chesapeake Energy, data was provided on their expected yield for wells in the various shale plays. They expect the total yield from their Haynesville wells to be 6.5 bcfe, Fayetteville 2.4 bcfe, and Marcellus wells to yield 4.2 bcfe. These numbers might increase as technology improves.

VegDRI Drought Monitoring Map

USGS now has a website for online viewing of Vegetation Drought Response Index (VegDRI) maps. “VegDRI integrates time-series observations of vegetation with climate, land cover-land use type, ecological setting, and soil characteristics to show drought’s effect on vegetation at a 1-kilometer resolution.” The map is updated every two weeks.

Coiled Galaxy NGC 1097

The Spitzer Space Telescope has captured an image of an eye-shaped coiled galaxy named NGC 1097. In the center of the “eye” is an enormous black hole that is about 100,000,000 times our sun’s mass.

Hurricane Felicia

Hurricane Felicia is a Category 3 hurricane moving northwestward in the eastern Pacific Ocean off the coast of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center believes that Felicia will merge with Tropical Storm Enrique and strengthen.

Hurricane Forecast: Only Four This Year?

So far this season there has been a low level of tropical storm activity in the Atlantic Ocean. The forecasters at Colorado State University have reduced their expected number of Atlantic hurricanes to just four.

Field Trip Funding for K-12 Teachers
