Wired.com - DangerRoom | U.S. military is planning the launch today of two Space Tracking and Surveillance System (STSS) satellites.

STSS is part of an effort to develop a network of sensors that can detect the launch of ballistic missiles, track their trajectory, and feed targeting data to missile-shooting interceptors. The satellites, shown being prepped for delivery here, are demonstration models; while in low earth orbit, they will be used to test sensor performance against ground targets, airborne targets and short- and long-range ballistic missile targets. The satellite program, formerly known as Space-Based Infrared System-Low, has seen the usual schedule slips, restructuring and cost overruns.
