FIRES IN YELLOWSTONE
Fires broke out in Yellowstone in September 2009. The Arnica Fire near Yellowstone Lake started on September 13 but grew dramatically starting on September 24, thanks to warm, dry weather.

FIRES IN EASTERN AUSTRALIA
Fires burned throughout Queensland, Australia in late September 2009. Fires burned along the coast, and a large complex of fires burned near Tambo, Queensland.

TYPHOON PARMA
Typhoon Parma moved westward across the Pacific Ocean in late September 2009. Parma was downgraded to a tropical storm as it passed over the Philippines, but moved back toward the islands, apparently interacting with Typhoon Melor to the northeast.

SUPER TYPHOON MELOR
Super Typhoon Melor formed over the Pacific Ocean in early October 2009. As of October 7, the storm was being predicted to come ashore on the island of Honshu, southeast of Osaka.

SOUFRIERE HILLS VOLCANO RESUMES ACTIVITY
After 10 months of relative quiet, Soufriere Hills volcano on the Caribbean island of Montserrat blasted ash into the sky in early October 2009.
