1011now.com | Pfizer in Lincoln, Nebraska hopes to develop a H1N1 vaccine to prevent the virus from moving to pigs.

With the recent H1N1 flu outbreaks, a Lincoln pharmaceutical company is working on a vaccine... but not one for humans.

Pfizer is working to make sure pigs can't get the virus. Even though no pig has gotten H1N1 yet, scientists recently proved it's possible. Pfizer scientists hope a new pig vaccine for H1N1 is ready to ship by flu season.

"Pigs naturally have the ability to be infected with multiple strains of flu," said Michael Huether, Pfizer's director of technical support in Lincoln.

No pigs have naturally gotten H1N1, but Pfizer hopes to protect pork producers in case it does migrate to pigs.

'What we're trying to do is give them an alternative, should that need arise and they need that for exporting product, we want to make sure our livestock is protected," said Huether.

There's a secondary reason for the vaccine. Pigs can usually give flu back to humans. No one has proved that could happen with H1N1, but pigs are a natural mixing vessel where flu mutates.

"Basically, avian flu, human flu can all go into a pig, it will go inside there, all those viruses mix together, they can mutate, they can re-assort and come out with a different strain of flu. So obviously there's a lot of concern, some of it doesn't have merit, some of it does," he said.

However, Pfizer admits pork producers aren't sold on the idea of vaccinating their pigs since there's not yet a case of H1N1 in pigs.

"To be quite honest there's still a lot of talk about whether the pork producers feel they need the vaccine. The USDA has made the strains available, but they haven't mandated any vaccination," Huether said.

Even if H1N1 infects pigs, he said the meat is still safe to eat. The only way infection could happen would be a face to face meeting between pig and human.

"Pork is fine to eat, this doesn't put any risk to the general population," Huether said.

So right now the vaccine is simply a precaution.

This news from Pfizer comes the same day the company is hit with a $2.3 billion payment to settle a law suit for illegally marketing medicines. It's the largest settlement of it's kind to date. A Pfizer spokesperson says the company settled so it can move on to, "Develop innovative medicine."

Examiner.com | "Dangers of the East Coast" - Coastal Flooding, Vessels Adrift and the Abnormally High Tides of 2009

Welcome back to our Special Series: "Dangers of the East Coast". In Part 3 we talk about Coastal Flooding, Vessels Adrift and the Abnormally High Tides of 2009.

If you haven't checked out the First 2 parts of the series,

Part One can be found here:
http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-20121-Savannah-EMT-Examiner~y2009m8d28-Special-Series-Dangers-of-the-East-Coast--Hurricanes

Part Two is here:
http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-20121-Savannah-EMT-Examiner~y2009m8d29-Special-Series-Dangers-of-the-East-Coast--Part-2

What part do sea levels play in the severity of storm impacts on the East Coast? According to the NOAA, this year’s astronomical high tides were caused by “persistent winds and a weakened current in the Mid-Atlantic”. http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2009/20090831_tides.html

Sea levels were reported up to 2 feet higher than normal in some places along the Atlantic Coast from Maine to Florida. One particular current, known as the “Florida Current Transport” was a major contributor to the year’s coastal flooding. Along with a constant Northeast wind, the East coast experienced a very unusual and sometimes frightening year. Had this occurred during an active year for Hurricanes, like 2005, the damages to east coast communities would have been significant. This is one reason it is so important that communities are always prepared and keeping an eye on any changes in the year’s climate and keeping residents aware of any potential impacts from storms.

Coastal flooding causes damage to property, such as houses and roadways. The East Coast is full of communities that are linked together by bridges and roads that are in low lying areas, in some cases not much higher than sea level. In years when seas levels rise abnormally, as they did in 2009, it creates an even greater potential for catastrophic damages from storms. During the high tides, roadways can become impassable and sometimes people do not understand the dangers involved. A few inches of water can sweep a person off tcheir feet. Just 1-2 feet of water can carry away your car. Be sure to check this out in: How to Survive in a Hurricane: http://www.examiner.com/x-20121-Savannah-EMT-Examiner

This year was exceptional for East Coasters in terms of tides, however, it does not necessarily mean that next year will be even higher. What it means, is that communities need to use every resource available to predict and prepare on a month by month and season by season basis.

Many East Coast communities are located in flood plains. In years with higher tides and heavy rainfall, these floodplains can take a long time to drain, leaving residents soggy for weeks. Soil can also be pulled away from the property and underground water channels that you don’t see can change unexpectedly, resulting in problems like sinkholes and flooding as the water table rises from below. Since we have very little geological surveying done in many local communities, these hazards can be very difficult to prepare for.

Another hazard associated with waterways, storms and flooding relates to moored vessels. In 2008, Hurricane Gustav caused problems with barges breaking loose from their moorings and damaging vital structures such as bridges. A plan was formed in the Gulf Coast to minimize this danger, which could be considered by East Coast communities as well. In Louisiana, a rule was put in place stating that barges and other vessels could not remain moored in major waterways, such as the Intra-coastal. The problem with this on the East Coast, is that prior to a storm, vessels may have to be brought inland by passing under draw bridges. These same draw bridges may need to be down during an evacuation to allow people to leave coastal areas. Each state will need to tackle this issue in their emergency planning.

It’s time to introduce another face into the crowd of dangers on the coast. When many people think of Tornadoes, they automatically think of Tornado Alley which covers the center of the country, from the South of the Mississippi almost to the Great Lakes. But East Coasters, particularly those in the south east, should acquaint themselves with another area of high tornado activity – Dixie Alley.

In Part 4, we will look closer at this area and the phenomenon of tornadoes on the East Coast as we go “Inside a Dixie Alley Tornado”.

Keep Safe!

Examiner.com | Crop Circle Messages in the Sand?

September 2, 7:14 AM Sacramento UFO Examiner Gregory Brewer

Who says the crop circle season is over. They just found an alternate canvas.

Greetings to our readers,

This article features a few images of the on going attempt to convey messages to the human race by means of an alternate media. "SAND"

The crops may have been harvested in those areas where crop circle appear most commonly but it seems apparent that the messages must continue. The formations below were discovered in the middle east and are without trace of human creation. No footprints etc. not to mention the size of these formations and the lack of discrepancy is phenomenal.

Thanks again for viewing,

SpaceWeather.com | Carrington Event Mega-Storm 150 year Anniversary - September 2, 2009

GEOMAGNETIC MEGA-STORM: On Sept. 2nd, a billion-ton coronal mass ejection (CME) slammed into Earth's magnetic field. Campers in the Rocky Mountains woke up in the middle of the night, thinking that the glow they saw was sunrise. No, it was the Northern Lights. People in Cuba read their morning paper by the red glow of aurora borealis. Earth was peppered by particles so energetic, they altered the chemistry of polar ice.

Hard to believe? It really happened--exactly 150 years ago. This map shows where auroras were sighted in the early hours of Sept. 2, 1859:

Above: Aurora sightings, Sept. 2, 1859. Image courtesy J.L. Green, NASA

As the day unfolded, the gathering storm electrified telegraph lines, shocking technicians and setting their telegraph papers on fire. The "Victorian Internet" was knocked offline. Magnetometers around the world recorded strong disturbances in the planetary magnetic field for more than a week.

The cause of all this was an extraordinary solar flare witnessed the day before by British astronomer Richard Carrington. His sighting marked the discovery of solar flares and foreshadowed a new field of study: space weather. According to the National Academy of Sciences, if a similar flare occurred today, it would cause $1 to 2 trillion in damage to society's high-tech infrastructure and require four to ten years for complete recovery.

A repeat of the Carrington Event seems unlikely from our low vantage point in a deep solar minimum--but don't let the quiet fool you. Strong flares can occur even during weak solar cycles. Indeed, the Carrington flare itself occured during a relatively weak cycle similar to the one expected to peak in 2012-2013. Could it happen again? Let's hope not.

These include pushing glyphosate (Monsanto's Roundup herbicide) for poppy eradication in Afghanistan and opening the Iraqi market to the patenting of plants and seeds while preventing farmers from saving registered seed varieties.

HAARP Fluxgate Magnetometer - September 2, 2009 6:45am CDT

The chart below is a running 36 hour plot of the readings taken from the fluxgate magnetometer, built by the University of Alaska, Geophysical Institute, operating at the HAARP ionospheric observatory in Gakona, Alaska. The three traces represent mutually orthogonal components of the earth's magnetic field as follows:
  • The "H" component (black trace) is positive magnetic northward
  • The "D" component (red trace) is positive eastward
  • The "Z" component (blue trace) is positive downward
Geomagnetic storminess is usually indicated in oscillatory variations in the earth's magnetic field. Additional detail concerning the nature and severity of the ionospheric disturbance can be found through analysis of the three components of the field. Data from a chain of magnetometers is also available.
