Moscow, Russia (RIA Novosti) | Japan set to launch space freighter to ISS on Sept. 10
MOSCOW, September 7 (RIA Novosti) - Japan will launch its first domestic cargo spaceship to the International Space Station ISS on September 10, a Russian space official said on Monday.
The spacecraft was built by Japan's space agency JAXA, and will lift off on board the country's new H-2B rocket. It will deliver about 4.5 metric tons of scientific equipment to the orbital station.
"The launch of the Japanese H-2B carrier rocket with the HTV-1 unmanned cargo spacecraft is scheduled for September 10, 2009 [at 17.01 GMT] from the Tanegashima Space Center in southern Japan," an official from Russia's Mission Control said, adding that the freighter is expected to dock with the ISS on September 17.
The spacecraft is a solar-powered cylinder about 10 meters long and 4.4 meters wide. It can haul up to 6 tons of cargo, but will be loaded with less cargo on its maiden flight.
JAXA and NASA officials earlier said the Japanese freighters "will be vital to support the space station's six-person crew once NASA's space shuttle fleet retires in the next year or so."
Russian and European unmanned freighters and the U.S. space shuttles have so far performed the task of bringing vital supplies and equipment to the orbital station.
Unlike the fully-automated cargo ships built by Russia and Europe, which can dock at the station with the use of the Kurs laser-guided docking system, designed and built by Russia's Energia corporation, the HTV-1 will be pulled to the ISS by a robotic arm operated by the ISS crew.
JAXA said it has spent about $680 million since 1997 to develop the HTV spacecraft.
The $220-million vehicle is expected to be "buried" in southern Pacific after spending a month docked with the ISS.
Deseret News | Is another 9/11 set to unfold?
Earlier this year, quite by happenstance, I read a book written by Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter James B. Stewart.
"Heart of a Soldier" tells the story of two men who, well before it happened, foretold not only of the terrorist attack of 9/11 but also the 1993 bombing in the World Trade Center parking garage that preceded it.
One of the men, Rick Rescorla, was chief of security for Morgan Stanley with an office in the World Trade Center. He died on 9/11, but not before he shepherded all but six of Morgan Stanley's 2,700 employees to safety because of a well-prepared and well-executed evacuation plan. He'd have made it out, too, had he not gone back in the building looking for those six.
The other man, Daniel J. Hill, is still alive.
With another Sept. 11 approaching I wanted to talk to The Man Who Predicted 9/11.
Although the primary focus in Stewart's book is on Rescorla — a bona fide hero for his actions on 9/11 — I found Hill to be an even more fascinating character.
It was Hill who converted to Islam as a young U.S. Army paratrooper stationed in Beirut in 1958. It was Hill who learned fluent Arabic. It was Hill who joined the Mujahedeen Freedom Fighters in Afghanistan and fought the Soviet invasion there in the 1980s. It was Hill who personally met Osama bin Laden. It was Hill who used information from Islamic extremists to warn Rescorla that terrorists would use the underground parking garage for a car bomb attack on the World Trade Center. It was Hill who asked the U.S. government to assist him in an assassination attempt on bin Laden in 1998 (the request was rejected). And it was Hill who warned the FBI just weeks before Sept. 11, 2001, that his Mideast contacts told him "something big" was about to happen in the United States, in New York, Washington, D.C., or Philadelphia — maybe all three.
Through the Internet I managed to contact Hill at his home in Florida. He's 71 now. I asked him if his reputation as a terrorism prognosticator without parallel has changed his life much.

Bill Bonner on economic depression, hyperinflation and the rapidly declining US empire -- An empire is a political bubble. It is an excessive or extraordinary event in political history. And now we have a bubble called the American empire. The US bubble, you could say, started in 1917. That's a long time ago. Americans are going to give up the thinking of imperial citizens. Good. They are already giving up bubble thinking. They don't want to borrow or spend. This news is just out. They are paying off debt faster than in 1952.
Wall Street Journal: Warning: The Deficits Are Coming! -- Mr. Walker identifies the disease as having a basic cause: "Washington is totally out of touch and out of control," he sighs. "There is political courage there, but there is far more political careerism and people dodging real solutions." He identifies entrenched incumbency as a real obstacle to change. "Members of Congress ensure they have gerrymandered seats where they pick the voters rather than the voters picking them and then they pass out money to special interests who then make sure they have so much money that no one can easily challenge them," he laments.
How Many Rabbits Are Left In The Hat? -- The fact that 65% of companies are still in the process of cutting their staff loads is quite disturbing — even manufacturing employment fell 63,000 in August, to its lowest level since April 1941 (!), despite the inventory replenishment in the automotive sector and all the excitement over the recent 50+ print in the ballyhooed ISM index. Until we see signs of a sustained turnaround in the jobs market all bets are off over the sustainability of any economic recovery.
The End of a Currency -- All those fake numbers being put out by Wall Street, the government and CNBC showing magical growth on the Ponzi paper digit (Alice in Wonderland) side of the equation must be juxtaposed against the real world manufacturing economy that has been in decline for 30 years. This is the 30 year digital/Ponzi-paper inflation crescendo that has finally crested and, like an ocean wave, will curl over and break. This is also the 30 year engineered interest rate decline that has finally reached its nadir, 0%!

Raccoons to be fed vaccine for rabies -- The baits will be spread by low-flying aircraft in the first 10 days, weather permitting. The ground baiting is to run through Sept. 25, and perhaps longer, the Ohio Department of Health said in announcing the fall campaign. The baiting along Ohio's eastern border is to keep raccoons with rabies out of Ohio under a federally supervised plan. Other states involved are Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Comment: Somehow this is glossed over. They're dropping the vaccines over the area from airplanes? This is insane! Trust me, we don't have a rabies problem in Ohio. We have a stupid people problem in Ohio. (Thanks Jimm)

SpaceWeather.com | Rocketing Solar Plasma Blob on September 5, 2009

"I've never seen a fast ejection like this before," says Godard. "I recorded the action using a 3-inch refracting telescope and a Coronado SolarMax filter."The blob does not appear to have escaped the sun. Indeed, it might not have been a blob at all, but rather a plasma wave traveling up a magnetic flux tube--and 'breaking' when it reached the top. Whether it was a rocketing blob or breaking wave, it shows that even the quiet sun is worth watching. Monitoring is encouraged.

Unusually high tides, strong rip currents with 275 lifeguard rescues Sunday, Jellyfish all at Volusia beaches, Florida
http://www.news-journalonline.com/NewsJournalOnline/breakingnews/beach090709.htmSeptember 07, 2009
High tides keeps Volusia beaches closed to driving for part of Labor Day
Staff Report
DAYTONA BEACH -- Mother nature wasn't cooperating with those hoping to spend Labor Day at the World's Most Famous Beach.
Unusually high tides forced county officials to close all beach ramps this morning and Beach Patrol Capt. Scott Petersohn they didn't begin to reopen the ramps until about 12:30 p.m. All ramps will not open until later in the day, after the tide recedes.
Those who could find someplace to park other than the beach were free to use the beaches this morning. But tides were too high to allow anyone to drive or park on the beach, he said.
Long lines of cars were waiting at ramps to drive onto the beach about noon, he said.
The long Labor Day weekend, viewed by many as the last big weekend of the summer, is traditionally a very busy time at the beach. But conditions have not been kind to those trying to enjoy the beach this weekend.
Strong rip currents made swimming dangerous, with 275 lifeguard rescues on Sunday alone, Petersohn said. And some of beachgoers who survived the churning surf had to deal with another irritating problem -- jellyfish stings. Petersohn said one person had to be taken to the hospital Sunday after suffering a suspected case of anaphylactic shock from a jellyfish sting.
EarthObservatory.NASA.gov | Fires in Los Angeles County

By September 5, 2009, the Station Fire in Los Angeles County was 49 percent contained, according to a report from California’s Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. By that time, the fire had burned 154,655 acres (625 square kilometers), and completely destroyed 76 homes, 2 commercial properties, and 86 other types of buildings. The fire had damaged 13 homes, 1 commercial property, and 18 other types of structures.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this true-color image on September 6, 2009. Compared to earlier images of the fire, the smoke is much diminished, and actively burning areas—indicated by red outlines—are relatively small and scattered.

Sacramento Bee | Fresno leaders feel insulted by foreign food giveaway
FRESNO – The governor's food giveaway to struggling families on Fresno County's west side – widely known as America's breadbasket – has included imported products such as Chinese carrots and Mexican macaroni, embarrassed officials have admitted.
A political flap erupted last week after officials discovered the imports, prompting a letter of protest from at least one member of Congress.
Local leaders say it's bad enough that thousands of farm town residents are living off state-funded food donations, thanks to the water shortage and a foundering economy. But the foreign-produced food adds insult to injury, they say.
"It doesn't make me feel proud that we, who are leaders in agriculture, depend on other countries to make ends meet," said Amarpreet "Ruby" Dhaliwal, mayor of the tiny westside town of San Joaquin, where 2,200 people showed up at a food giveaway last week.

Monday September 7,2009 THE Queen has angrily attacked Gordon Brown over his handling of the war in Afghanistan, it was claimed yesterday.
Her Majesty reportedly told the Prime Minister of her concerns over shortages of equipment for troops fighting on the frontline.
Prince Philip and Prince Charles have also contacted Mr Brown about the lack of support for British forces. The claims come amid mounting criticism of the Government’s handling of the war.
The latest revelations are particularly damaging as the Queen, whose grandson Prince Harry spent 10 weeks fighting in Helmand Province, is head of the Armed Forces.
Respected historian Andrew Roberts said he had learned of the Queen’s anger through a member of the Royal Family, a serving general and a recent Cabinet minister.
