Breaking: Democrats to vote on Wilson sanction 14 Sep 2009 House Democratic leaders will move ahead with a "resolution of disapproval" against Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) on Tuesday afternoon, following through on their threat to sanction the conservative lawmaker for heckling President Obama last week. House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) will formally introduce the resolution Tuesday afternoon, according to Democratic insiders, and the vast majority of Democrats - as well as some Republicans - are expected to vote for it.

DHS Announces New Information-Sharing Tool to Help Fusion Centers Combat Terrorism --Select fusion center personnel with a federal security clearance will be able to access specific terrorism-related information resident on the DoD Secret Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNet). 14 Sep 2009 The Departments of Homeland Security (DHS) and Defense (DoD) today announced an initiative to grant select state and major urban area fusion center personnel access to classified terrorism-related information residing in DoD's classified network. Under this initiative, select fusion center personnel with a federal security clearance will be able to access specific terrorism-related information resident on the DoD Secret Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNet)--a secure network used to send classified data. This classified data will be accessed via DHS' Homeland Security Data Network (HSDN)... This joint initiative will promote collaboration between DHS, DoD and other federal departments and agencies, enabling the trusted and secure exchange of terrorism-related information in order to detect, deter, prevent and respond to homeland security threats. Hold on to your hats! A Grade 'A' sociopath is drafting an Internet bill: Lieberman to draft cyber bill 14 Sep 2009 Sen. Joe Lieberman (R-Israel) plans to push legislation this year that would bolster the government against cyber attacks and may require private companies to meet new security standards. Lieberman, the chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, and ranking member Susan Collins (R-Maine) on Monday told Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials and financial-services representatives at a hearing on the topic that the public and private sectors are not coordinating enough to prevent high-tech threats against critical networks. The pair also said they were going to take a hard look [!] at how effective Homeland Security officials have been at thwarting attacks across federal networks. [I don't want LieberBush taking a hard look -- or a soft look -- at *anything* to do w. the Internet *or* Homeland Security! --LRP]

Prosecutors: Blackwater Guards Opened Fire to 'Instigate Gun Battles' 14 Sep 2009 Private security guards Terrorists who worked for Blackwater repeatedly shot wildly into the streets of Baghdad without regard for civilians long before they were involved in a 2007 shooting episode that left at least 14 Iraqis dead, federal prosecutors charge in a new court document. While traveling through Baghdad in heavily armored vehicles, at least one of the guards, under contract with the State Department to provide security for United States Embassy personnel, fired an automatic weapon "without aiming" while another deliberately fired into the streets to "instigate gun battles in a manner that was inconsistent with the use of force and escalation of force policies that governed all Blackwater personnel in Iraq," the federal prosecutors stated. [Looks like CLG was right all along for stating that Blackwater/Xe carries out acts of terrorism so that they are 'needed' to stop attacks that they are blaming on so-called insurgents. --LRP]

"He was being watched and concern grew as he met with a group of individuals in Queens over the weekend," [] said Congressman Pete King (R-NY). "The FBI went to court late last night for an emergency warrant to conduct the raids this morning." A resident in the neighborhood said there was police activity around 2 a.m. Monday.

Dave Cardona, special agent in charge of the FBI’s criminal division in New York, confirmed the investigation. New York police are assisting in the matter, the department said.

The verdict on Monday sentenced 28-year-old 'ringleader' Abdulla Ahmed Ali to at least 40 years behind bars without parole, while Assad Sarwar, 29, and Tanvir Hussain, 28, got prison sentences of least 36 and 32 years, respectively.

NYC Terror Raids a Cover For Covert US War Front: US Launches Military Strike in Somalia Against 'al Qaeda' Target 14 Sep 2009 A U.S. commando attack in Somalia has 'killed' an al Qaeda [al-CIAduh] operative who is on the FBI's list of most wanted terrorists, sources tell ABC News. Several sources tell ABC News at least one U.S. helicopter fired on a convoy carrying suspected 'al Qaeda' targets in southern Somalia. An American official says a U.S. Navy ship was also nearby to monitor the situation and provide assistance if needed. Saleh Ali Nabhan's death has not yet been officially confirmed, but sources tell ABC News that his body is now in U.S. custody. [Right, he'll be back again, to provide cover for another Pentagon 'oopsie' bombing, when the media attention needs to be elsewhere. --LRP]

He's baaack: 'Bin Laden' message harangues US 14 Sep 2009 An audio message purportedly by 'al-Qaeda' leader Osama Bin Laden has been released on an Islamist website. The message, entitled "a statement to the American people", was about 10 minutes long and was accompanied by a still image of Bin Laden but no video. [As always.] In the message, a voice tells the US president that he is "powerless" to stop the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The message comes just two days after the US marked the eighth anniversary of the 11 September attacks on America.

'Osama bin Laden' Message Surfaces in Wake of 9/11 Anniversary --Message Blames U.S. Support of Israel for Sept. 11 Attacks 13 Sep 2009 The tape contains no specific threats to the U.S., and the al Qaeda [al-CIAduh] leader says his message is to counter the White House argument that the war on terror is being waged to protect U.S. security. 'Bin Laden' also tries to link President Obama to the Bush Administration, saying "the sour reality is that the new administration is still covering you in the shroud of darkness." Bin Laden criticizes Obama for using "the same heads of defense from Cheney and Bush," specifically naming Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and General David Petraeus.

Four killed in U.S. missile strike in Pakistan 14 Sep 2009 A suspected U.S. drone fired a missile at a Taliban target in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal region on Monday, killing at least four militants, intelligence officials and residents said.

Victims' families tell their stories following Nato airstrike in Afghanistan --'I took some flesh home and called it my son.' The Guardian interviews 11 villagers 11 Sep 2009 At first light last Friday, in the Chardarah district of Kunduz province in northern Afghanistan, the villagers gathered around the twisted wreckage of two fuel tankers that had been hit by a Nato airstrike. They picked their way through a heap of almost a hundred charred bodies and mangled limbs which were mixed with ash, mud and the melted plastic of jerry cans, looking for their brothers, sons and cousins. They called out their names but received no answers. By this time, everyone was dead.

Afghan war claims life of 214th British serviceman 15 Sep 2009 Another British soldier died of gunshot wounds in Helmand province yesterday – the fifth to be killed in the district of Babaji since the end of an operation to clear it of Taliban fighters. The soldier from the 2nd Battalion The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, who was serving with The Light Dragoons battlegroup, was shot while on foot patrol on Sunday night.

Iraq shoe-thrower's release delayed 14 Sep 2009 The release of Muntazer al-Zaidi, the television reporter jailed for throwing his shoes at George Bush, the former US president [sic], has been delayed, according to his brother. He was set to be freed on Monday because of good behaviour.

Bush, was expected to be freed to a joyous welcome on Monday, his family said. Zaidi was initially sentenced to three years for assaulting a foreign head of state but had his jail time reduced to one year on appeal. He is set to be freed early because of good behaviour.

White Supremacist Held on $1 Million Bail for Facebook Threats By Terrence O'Brien 14 Sep 2009 ...22-year-old James Gallagher, of Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania, failed to see the flaw in his plan when, via his Facebook page, he announced his intention to shoot up the entirety of nearby Springfield Township... Those messages were brought to the attention of local authorities, who then placed a detective on the case. The detective went undercover online and was able to gain access to Gallagher's profile, which contained not only the threatening messages but several photos of him brandishing heavy firearms, including AK-47 and AR-15 assault rifles.

Ministers retreat on child database 15 Sep 2009 Moves to vet every adult who works with children are set to be watered down after the Government ordered a last-minute review of the controversial anti-paedophile scheme. Ed Balls, the Children's Secretary, acted amid fury that the criminal record checks would affect parents who give lifts to children on behalf of sports teams or voluntary organisations such as the Scouts. The move comes after The Independent revealed that prominent children's authors, including Philip Pullman and Anthony Horowitz, have threatened to stop visiting schools rather than subject themselves to the "insulting" requirement.

Insert eye-roll here: Obama to Wall Street: Get behind regulatory reform 14 Sep 2009 President Barack Obama warned financial firms on Monday to heed the lessons of Lehman Brothers' collapse a year ago and get behind a regulatory overhaul he wants Congress to pass this year. Obama, who has focused most of his energy on healthcare reform in recent weeks, went to Wall Street to highlight another top priority of his administration -- updating financial rules to prevent another economic collapse.

Stop Begging Obama and Get Mad By Chris Hedges 14 Sep 2009 The right-wing accusations against Barack Obama are true. He is a socialist, although he practices socialism for corporations. He is squandering the country’s future with deficits that can never be repaid. He has retained and even bolstered our surveillance state to spy on Americans. He is forcing us to buy into a health care system that will enrich corporations and expand the abuse of our for-profit medical care... He will not end our wars. He will not rebuild the nation. He is a tool of the corporate state.

Wis. DNR: Plant a tree, help a polar bear 13 Sep 2009 Plant a tree in Wisconsin and help save the habitat for polar bears thousands of miles away on frozen ice. That's the message of a new project called "tree planting for climate change" involving a partnership between the state Department of Natural Resources and Polar Bears International. DNR secretary Matt Frank says planting trees is one way for people to reduce their carbon footprint and help combat global climate change.

Previous lead stories: Joe Wilson Voted to Provide Taxpayer Money for Illegal Immigrants' Healthcare By Donny Shaw 11 Sep 2009 On Wednesday night, Rep. Joe Wilson [R, SC-2], shouted "You lie!" at President Obama when he said that the healthcare bill would not cover illegal immigrants. "The supporters of the government takeover of healthcare and liberals who want to give healthcare to illegals are using my opposition as an excuse to distract from the critical questions being raised about this poorly conceived plan," Wilson said the next day in a campaign fundraising video. However, in 2003 [under Bush], Wilson voted to provide federal funds for illegal immigrants' healthcare. The vote came on the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003, which contained Sec. 1011 authorizing $250,000 annually between 2003 and 2008 for government reimbursements to hospitals who provide treatment for uninsured illegal immigrants. The program has been extended through 2009 and there is currently a bipartisan bill in Congress to make it permanent. [Wilson obviously has no problem funding undocumented workers' health care, as long as the 'president' is white. --LRP]

Afghanistan prisoners to be allowed to challenge their detention for first time 13 Sep 2009 Prisoners held in Afghanistan for years without trial in a notorious military prison and accused of being Taliban fighters or terrorists will for the first time be able to challenge their detention. More than 600 prisoners held at Bagram airbase will be given a chance to have their case reviewed under a new scheme disclosed by the Pentagon... The move was met cautiously by lawyers working with prisoners. Ramzi Kassem, a law professor at City University of New York acting for a Yemeni seized in Thailand in 2002 said it was "window dressing". "The whole thing was meant to pull the wool over the eyes of the judicial system. These changes don't come anywhere near an adequate substitute for a real review." The guidelines came to light as President Barack Obama's administration reviewed Bush-era detention policies. His government is currently in US court battles with lawyers seeking to gain full legal rights for Bagram detainees.

U.S. soldier held in shooting death of KBR contractor on American base 13 Sep 2009 A U.S. soldier was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting today of a civilian contractor on an American military base in the northern Iraq city of Tikrit, the military said. The shooting occurred at 8:30 a.m. and the man died of his wounds later in the day. The Associated Press later reported that Houston-based KBR confirmed he was one of its employees, 27-year-old Lucas Vinson.

Americans for Legal Immigration PAC | Rising Calls for President Obama To Apologize For Lie To The Nation

The national non-partisan immigration enforcement organization known as ALIPAC is calling on President Barack Obama to publicly apologize to the Congress, media, and the entire nation for lying about illegal immigrants having access to health care reform benefits.

"Considering the large volume of evidence suggesting President Obama lied in his speech before Congress, he should follow Congressman Joe Wilson's example and apologize immediately," said William Gheen of ALIPAC. "Many people feel Joe Wilson was rude, but that is pale by comparison to the President of the United States of America intentionally lying to Congress, the media, and every American."

Obama's claim that illegal aliens would not be covered by his health care reform plans have been disproved by the lack of enforcement measures in HR 3200, Democrat party line votes blocking any enforcement amendments to the bills, the fact that the US Senate is now moving to close loopholes Obama said did not exist, and the Congressional Research Service analysis showing Obama's comments to be incorrect.

Further evidence that Obama intends to offer these benefits to illegal aliens are found in the fact his initial national estimates of the number of uninsured in America included over 6.6 uninsured illegal aliens.

President Obama also told Katie Couric in a recent interview he plans to push for a "path to citizenship" for illegal aliens and that would qualify them for all taxpayer benefits and American jobs.

NationalGeographics.com | Bible-Era Mystery Vessel Found -- Code Stumps Experts

Apparently a mixture of two languages, the inscription shown above—rendered in sharp cuts alongside shallow scratches—appears on a fragment of a biblical-era ritual cup found in Jerusalem. The text might be a coded message, according to the archaeologists who found the stone vessel in summer 2009.
Photograph by S. Pfann/UHL

It didn't look like much at first, just a broken, mud-caked stone mug.

But when archaeologists in Jerusalem cleaned the 2,000-year-old vessel, they discovered ten lines of mysterious script.

"These were common stone mugs that appear in all Jewish households" of the time, said lead excavator Shimon Gibson of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

"But this is the first time an inscription has been found on a stone vessel" of this type.

Deciphering the writing could provide a window into daily life or religious ritual in Jerusalem around the time of Jesus Christ (interactive time line of early Christianity).

Working on historic Mount Zion—site of King David's tomb and the Last Supper—the archaeologists found the cup near a ritual pool this summer. The dig site is in what had been an elite residential area near the palace of King Herod the Great, who ruled Israel shortly before the birth of Jesus.

From the objects that surrounded it, Gibson determined that the cup dated from some time between 37 B.C. and A.D. 70, when the Romans nearly destroyed Jerusalem after a Jewish revolt.

Among the dig's other finds are ruins spanning the time of the founding of King Solomon's Temple, around 970 B.C., to the destruction of Jerusalem by Christian crusaders in A.D. 1099.

AFP | Mafia sank boat with radioactive waste: official

ROME — Italian authorities have discovered a ship that was sunk by the mafia off the coast of southern Italy with 120 barrels of radioactive waste on board, a local prosecutor said Monday.

The 110-metre (360-feet) long ship was found on Saturday 500 metres (1,640 feet) under water and around 28 kilometres (17 miles) from the coast of Calabria, Paola city prosecutor Bruno Giordano told AFP.

"For the moment, we do not know the origin of the waste, but it is probably from abroad. It is a first lead," he said.

The Cunsky is one of 32 vessels carrying toxic material that has been sunk by the mafia in the Mediterranean, according to the prosecutor's office in Reggio Calabria.

The location of the Cunsky was revealed by a Calabrese mafia turncoat, Francesco Fonti, who confessed to being behind the explosion that brought the ship down, officials said.

Sebastiano Venneri, vice president of the environmental group Legambiente, said former members of the 'Ndrangheta mafia have said that the crime syndicate was paid to sink ships with radioactive material for the last 20 years.

"An investigation on the origin of this waste is therefore necessary as soon as possible," Venneri told AFP.

How do you hide over 5,000 Tea Party Patriots in Los Angeles?

..you ask the mainstream media, including CNN, CBS, ABC, NBC and local stations to report on them.

For those who rely on these news sources, the only rally you likely heard about in Southern California was the nudist rally in San Onofre. (They reported "dozens" of nudists...none of which would be worth finding footage on.)

What they all missed were the thousands of people who flocked to the federal building on Wilshire Boulevard to be a part of 9-12 West, a gathering of tea party patriots and concerned citizens throughout Southern California. Grassroots organizations from as far north as the Central Valley & Santa Barbara, as far south as San Juan Capistrano, and as far east as Las Vegas converged at the venue to join like-minded Americans upset with the lack of communication, responsiveness and transparency from both our national government and our state government.

SearchEngineLand.com | Google Crop Circles Logo, Missing “L”

Sep 14, 2009 at 9:07pm ET by Barry Schwartz

Currently, most Google search properties that are currently in a time zone that is September 15th, such as Google UK, are sporting a special Google Doodle that links to a search result for crop circles. The logo looks like the image above, i.e. of crop circles.

If you look at the logo’s file name, it is goog_e.gif, which is interesting because the Google flying saucer logo from ten days prior to this logo was missing an ‘O’ in the file name, go_gle.gif.

So first a missing O and now a missing L.

Brookings Institution | Is the G-20 Summit a Step Toward a New Global Economic Order? (Brookings Policy Brief Series # 170)

September 2009 —
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Brookings Policy Brief Series

In November 2008, President George W. Bush convened the first G-20 summit in Washington to address the worst global financial economic crisis since the Great Depression. This summit provided a long-overdue opportunity for a dramatic and lasting change in global governance. This was followed by the election of Barack Obama, who had campaigned on a distinctly different foreign policy platform compared with his Republican rival, Senator John McCain. These two events were no mere coincidence.

The global crisis has moved the United States, along with the rest of the world, toward a new global economic order, with the G-20 summit as one of the principal manifestations of the new global governance system. Of course, movement toward this new economic arrangement and progress toward reformed global governance are not inevitable. It will take a clear and sustained commitment to a new set of values and strong leadership, especially from President Obama and the United States, to ensure that the G-20 summit is not a short-lived exception to what had been a long-standing stalemate in global governance reform. The effectiveness of the G-20 in addressing the global economic crisis could lay the foundation for a new global order and provide the impetus for the many other necessary global governance reforms. Whether or not this happens will depend to a significant extent on the direction chosen by President Obama.

Telegraph.co.uk | Lehman collapse: Dubai and Gulf give a glimpse of a new world order

The unfolding of the West's debt crisis left Dubai with a half-finished skyline. A year on the region is reassessing its place in the world.

Nowhere did the financial crisis expose dreams as fantasy more starkly than Dubai and the Gulf. But perhaps nowhere, not even China, is the new world order that might result more clearly visible.

In the early months of the credit crisis, before the collapse of Lehman Brothers, Gulf states seemed immune.

Energy giants such as Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi saw their sovereign wealth funds swell from the upwards surge of the oil price.

Dubai real estate, leaping skywards both physically and financially, enjoyed a final blowout in early 2008. It seemed an exciting alternative to wobbly stock markets for what investors' cash remained in the system.

But after September, it all turned out to have been a Ponzi scheme in disguise. Dubai's trademark developers had been encouraged to sell off-plan sites low to create a feeding frenzy of "flippers" who sold unfinished properties to each other at ever higher prices........

September 14, 2009 - Now that everybody in the USA, from the janitors in their man-caves to the president addressing congress, has declared the "recession" over, is exactly the moment when what's left of the so-called economy is most likely to implode. If there were still shoeshine boys on Wall Street, they'd be starting their own hedge funds now, and CNBC's Larry Kudlow would be toasting them in the Grill Room of The Four Seasons. What we've seen in the vaunted rally for the last six months is the triumph of wishing over facts, combined with the most arrant market manipulation by floundering banks backstopped by a panicked government -- all pounding sand down a rat-hole of hopeless non-performing debt, while pretending that the machinery of capital finance still grinds on.

Rian.ru | Almost all militants recently killed in counter-terrorist operations in Russia's N Caucasus republic of Ingushetia were foreign mercenaries

YAROSLAVL, September 14 (RIA Novosti) - Almost all militants recently killed in counter-terrorist operations in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia were foreign mercenaries, the republic's president said on Monday.

"Out of 30 recently killed participants of illegal armed formations, 27 were foreigners," Yunus-Bek Yevkurov told an international conference on 'The modern state and global security' in Russia's Volga city of Yaroslavl.

He said that the figures give sufficient grounds to refer to 'international terrorism' in the region.

"The main disease of the present day, which has grasped the whole world, is international terrorism. It would be better for the world to wake up and for all countries to realize that this disease may reach anyone," he said.

Attacks on troops, police and other officials have been reported almost daily in Ingushetia and Russia's other North Caucasus republics in recent months.

On August 17, Ingushetia was hit by a suicide bombing which killed at least 20 people and injured 260 people.

Yevkurov himself survived a suicide car bomb attack on his motorcade in June and returned to work last month.

USGS.gov | Widespread Occurrence of Intersex Bass Found in U.S. Rivers

For Your Information:
Intersex
is a group of conditions where there is a discrepancy
between the external genitals and the internal genitals (the testes
and ovaries). The older term for this condition, hermaphroditism ...
www.google.com/health

“Although the USGS has already documented the severity of intersex in individual basins such as the Potomac, this study reveals the prevalence of intersex is more widespread than anyone anticipated, said Sue Haseltine, associate director for biology at the U.S. Geological Survey. “This research sends the clear message that we need to learn more about the hormonal and environmental factors that cause this condition in fish, as well as the number of fish afflicted with this condition.”

The study, said Hinck, presents the observed occurrence of intersex in a variety of freshwater fish species, but not potential causes. “This study adds a lot to our knowledge of this phenomena, but we still don’t know why certain species seem more prone to this condition or exactly what is causing it. In fact, the causes for intersex may vary by location, and we suspect it will be unlikely that a single human activity or kind of contaminant will explain intersex in all species or regions,” she said.

For example, said Hinck, at least one of their sites with a high prevalence of intersex—the Yampa River at Lay, Colo.—did not have obvious sources of endocrine-active compounds, which have been associated with intersex in fish. Such compounds are chemical stressors that have the ability to affect the endocrine system and include pesticides, PCBs, heavy metals, household compounds such as laundry detergent and shampoo, and many pharmaceuticals. Yet other study sites with high occurrence of intersex were on rivers with dense human populations or industrial and agricultural activities, which are more generally associated with endocrine-active compounds.

“We know that endocrine-active compounds have been associated with intersex in fish, but we lack information on which fish species are most sensitive to such compounds, the way that these compounds interact to cause intersex, and the importance of environmental factors,” Hinck said. “Proper diagnosis of this condition in wild fish is essential because if the primary causes are compounds that disrupt the endocrine system, then the widespread occurrence of intersex in fish would be a critical environmental concern.”

Early Humans Wove, Dyed Flax in Caucasus

An international team of researchers has found evidence that humans in what is now Georgia were using flax some 30,000 years ago.

Flax is one of the oldest domesticated crops, and has been used to make linen for thousands of years. Flax fibers are also used in rope, twine, and paper.

Harvard University archaeologist Ofer Bar-Yosef says he and his colleagues stumbled across the flax while looking through soil samples for grains of pollen, which prehistoric archaeologists use to infer climate conditions....

Examiner.com | Dog Breeds 101: How can I protect my pet during a disaster?

Many of us have plans that are set aside in case of disaster, such as a fire or flood, etc. According to a study done by the American Kennel Club (AKC) only 61% of people in the US include their pet in their emergency plans. And while 91% of people say that they will take their pet with them if they have to evacuate, there are countless examples of pets being left behind for whatever reason. As a pet owner, you are responsible for your pet despite emergency situations.

So what do you do?

Typically there are two major scenarios that cover all disasters. Either you are confined to your house for an uncertain length of time (with or without water, electricity, etc.) or you are forced to evacuate. When planning for either of these scenarios, be sure to include your pet........
