Italy says Iranian militia attacked its embassy
Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini told a Senate hearing: "About a hundred Basij dressed as civilians tried to assault the embassy shouting 'Death to Italy' and 'Death to (Prime Minister) Berlusconi'."
He later told reporters the attackers were "certainly or most probably Basij."
"We did not recognize them, but because of the type of demonstration and the slogans chanted it looked a bit suspect."
Read this carefully. Despite an absence of any evidence that this was anything more than a student demonstration against the west, the war hawks are trying to spin this as a replay of the 1979 takeover of the US embassy.

Obama effectively ends U.S.-manned space flight

Johnson Space Center chief 'anxious' about facility's future
The director of Johnson Space Center said Monday he is “very anxious” about the future of his sprawling facility in the Clear Lake area.
In his first public comments since the release of President Barack Obama's proposed NASA budget last week, Mike Coats said the space center will have to find new missions besides the International Space Station to replace the waning space shuttle program and the seemingly doomed Constellation program.
“We have three large programs and we're going to go down to one this year,” Coats said. “That's a big impact, so we're very anxious to figure out the path forward.”

New Ideas on Subsurface Water Movement Posted: 08 Feb 2010 11:35 PM PST CORVALLIS, Ore. – Researchers have discovered that some of the most fundamental assumptions about how water moves through soil in a seasonally dry climate such as the Pacific Northwest are incorrect – and that a century of research based on those assumptions will have to be reconsidered. A new study by scientists from Oregon State University and the Environmental Protection Agency showed – much to the surprise of the researchers – that soil clings tenaciously to the first precipitation after a dry summer, and holds it so tightly that it almost never mixes with other water. The finding is so significant, researchers said, that they aren’t even sure yet what it may mean. But it could affect our understanding of how pollutants move through soils, how nutrients get transported from soils to streams, how streams function and even how vegetation might respond to climate change. |

The largest of which was an M4 event at 07:43 UTC Monday. Sunspot 1045 remains an impressive sunspot cluster with a magnetic beta-gamma-delta configuration, but it now looks like it may be starting to thin out somewhat. There will remain the chance for M-Class flares. Any such flare could produce earth directed Coronal Mass Ejections. Another new sunspot was numbered on Monday. Sunspot 1047 is located in the southern hemisphere towards the eastern limb. Elsewhere Sunspot 1046 in the northern hemisphere remains quiet. Solar Flux + Sunspot # - The solar flux reached a high of 95.5 with a daily average of 94 on Monday. This is a new record for Cycle 24. The sunspot number was 71. This is also a new record.
