'Grey goo' food laced with nanoparticles could swamp Britain
Last updated at 12:01 AM on 08th January 2010Britain is on the brink of a massive expansion in foods containing controversial 'grey goo' nanoparticles, according to the former head of the Food Standards Agency.
Low-calorie chocolate and beer that doesn't go flat could be on sale within just five years, Lord Krebs said last night.
However, he and other peers believe there will be no requirement for the hi-tech products to be labelled as containing nanoparticles - microscopic compounds that can worm their way into the brain, liver and kidneys with unknown consequences.
But critics said the public have the right to know what they are putting into their bodies, and point out that new legislation will mean that cosmetics that contain nanoparticles will have to be clearly labelled.
Once derided by Prince Charles as 'grey goo', nanoparticles are tiny particles - 300 million would fit in a pinhead - with powerful properties that make them of interest to food companies. READ MORE

Campaign for Liberty | Yemen and the War of the Worlds
Imagine if you will a country dominated by heavily armed tribesmen who are fiercely independent, frequently engaged in activities that most observers would regard as criminal, deeply conservative in religion and culture but further divided along sectarian lines, and ruled over by a highly corrupt government that is fighting both a civil war and an insurgency. Throw into the hopper extremely rugged trackless terrain, porous borders, and security forces incapable of exercising jurisdiction outside of the capital city and it is a virtual witches' brew. Many would immediately think of Afghanistan, where all of the above applies but the description equally fits Yemen, which also enjoys crushing poverty and high unemployment coupled with declining oil revenues and water supplies that can no longer sustain the population. Intelligence officers who are familiar with Yemen agree that coming to grips with the country's tribesmen in an attempt to root out al-Qaeda will make Afghanistan look like a walk in the park.
Yemen might well become the next American quagmire if the plans of the Obama Administration in its global war on terrorism that is now referred to as "overseas contingency operations" are implemented. As is frequently the case in the imperial capital city Washington, the Obamas see another Yemen. It is an opportunity for nation building, to strengthen institutions and the economy and support an ostensibly friendly government to suppress terrorism. But it doesn't take much to see what's wrong with that approach. The Yemenis themselves are fearful of the consequences of too tight an embrace by Washington and are already trying to distance themselves. They see gangsterism and tribalism as their greatest internal security threats, not terrorism, and the best estimates for the number of al-Qaeda adherents in the country number in the low hundreds. And many of those are believed to be the grapes of wrath fruit of Guantanamo Bay, where the United States successfully confined Yemenis who were completely innocent, radicalizing them and turning them into terrorism proselytizers upon their return home. The Mafia Is Running the Giant World Casino
January 7, 2010The world-wide Mafia operates under the system of Neoliberalism, which means Free Trade that favors the rich countries, the corporatocracy (a coalition of government, banks, and corporations), financiers who do not see any further than multiplying their assets in a second with a stroke of the computer, and the arms industry that delivers the tools to empower this fundamentally corrupt system. The military, whose major function is to secure free access to gas, oil and other essential resources, is clearly also an important link in the project of world domination. NATO is just a U.S.-governed tool to keep Europe on its toes and do its bidding. Among the most powerful and predatory institutions founded by the rich nations, led by the United States, for reaching out to countries in financial distress are the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Trade Organization (WTO). Free trade pacts (NAFTA,CAFTA, FTAA)[1] and economic strangulation of the countries in need of help cause drastic financial crises in poverty-stricken nations.[2]
The Unites States is on its way to becoming a third-world country as far as the poor are concerned. In addition, the standard of living for the middle classes is deteriorating further and further. The richest country in the world has a catastrophic so-called health care system that is primarily intended to make huge profits for the private health industry (with negligent improvement in sight). Other crucial problems are the low-standard educational systems, decaying or non-existent infrastructure, a severe lack of public transportation the last point contributing to the overuse of carbon fuels in this country. There is also less and less financial support for social institutions, such as daycare centers, libraries, art centers, leisure and cultural activities.

US drone missiles slaughtered 700 Pakistani civilians since Obama took office
The grim death toll was announced in the Pakistani English-language daily Dawn Monday, just as news of the latest strike by a Hellfire missile made its way from an impoverished village near the Afghanistan border.
The missile strike left dead and buried in the rubble of their home a Pakistani teacher and his nine-year-old son. According to media accounts citing unnamed US intelligence officials, the teacher's home had been targeted for a Predator drone attack because of reports that militants had frequented the house.

Blackwater and the Khost Bombing: Is the CIA Deceiving Congress?
By Jeremy Scahill
January 6, 2010
But Schakowsky said the fact that two Blackwater personnel were in such close proximity to the December 30 suicide bomber--an alleged double agent, who was reportedly meeting with CIA agents including the agency's second-ranking officer in Afghanistan when he blew himself up--shows how "deeply enmeshed" Blackwater remains in sensitive CIA operations, including those CIA officials claim it no longer participates in, such as intelligence gathering and briefings with valuable agency assets. The two Blackwater men were reportedly in the room for the expected briefing by the double agent, Humam Khalil Muhammed Abu Mulal al-Balawi, who claimed to have recently met with Al Qaeda leader Ayman al Zawahiri. Breaking The Will Of The People: The Real Purpose Of Body Scanners

Perhaps the most alarming aspect of the body scanner push is that people are willingly accepting it. As Bloomberg news reports today, “Passenger acceptance of airport body scanners has increased following the failed terrorist attack,” with 92% of passengers at Manchester airport in northern England now agreeing to pass through the machines in a voluntary trial, compared with 75 percent before the incident.
The same report indicates that Around 90% of Muslims and Orthodox Jews were opting to use the scanners even prior to the Detroit incident rather than risking physical contact via pat downs and strip searches.
Travelers in Canada have indicated acceptance of the scanners, saying that they would “do anything for safety” and describing them as “a necessary evil”.
Meanwhile, nearly two-thirds of Germans favour airports using full-body scanners, despite claims that they are an invasion of personal privacy, a new poll has shown.
The will of the people is being systematically eroded and incrementally broken down. Airports are serving as reservations where the fundamental right to privacy must be left at the door.
Travelers have been acclimatized over time to know they must remove their shoes, take off their belts, untuck shirts, discard water, baby milk, shampoo and toothpaste. During the flight hands must be visible on laps, and even bathroom visits can now become national incidents as we have recently seen.
A culture of extreme fear has been engendered where the only way to stay safe is to cozy up to big brother, a psychological response akin to that of Stockholm syndrome.

LewRockwell.com | The strategy behind the Guard Home movement
"Bring the Guard Home – It's the Law!" is a national campaign, now active in more than 20 states, that is raising a legal challenge to the Federal Government's use of our National Guard troops for deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. In Wisconsin, the campaign is promoting AB 203, a bill in the Wisconsin state assembly which would give the Governor the authority to examine the legality of any federal order for deployment of the Wisconsin National Guard and to challenge in court any orders determined to be unlawful. I'm excited about this campaign because I see it as the beginning of a much larger national movement that is asking the long-overdue question: "Who decides about war?" This was the title of a recent conference in Washington D.C. that brought together grassroots peace activists and legal and constitutional scholars to ask one of the most fundamental questions we can ask, as citizens of a nation that claims to be a democracy.
Just take a look at our current situation: The United States exists in a permanent state of war, can even be said to be addicted to war, and all decision-making about the question of war has now been placed in the hands of one man: the President. Whatever we think of the current occupant of that office, this is clearly a dangerous, unhealthy and undemocratic state of affairs. READ MORE

Sarkozy as President of G8 and G20 in 2011 - repeats call for a monetary system that relies less on the dollar
Thu Jan 7, 2010 5:49am EST
PARIS, Jan 7 (Reuters) - Disorder among world currencies has become unacceptable and France intends to make it a major subject of its presidency of the G8 and G20 in 2011, President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Thursday.
France has been at the forefront of European complaints about the strength of the euro against other currencies.
It is the second time in as many days that Sarkozy has called for currency issues to be at the centre of international economic discussions.
"The monetary disorder in the world has become unacceptable," he said in a speech to an economic conference.
"Currency disorder is a major issue that France will bring up when it presides at the G8 and the G20 in 2011. There cannot be financial, economic and social order until we put an end to currency disorder."
France has said that the euro at $1.50 is a disaster for Europe, fuelling a broad international debate about imbalances between currencies. For a Reuters poll on foreign exchange rates, see [ID:nRPODHwpp]
"European companies will not gain competitiveness when the dollar is losing 50 percent of its value," Sarkozy said.
The dollar has been the lynchpin of the world financial system since 1944 when the Bretton Woods conference agreed on a pegged exchange rate system with the dollar as the effective reserve currency.
Although this collapsed in 1971, when the dollar stopped being convertible into gold and gave way to the currency model of freely floating currencies, the dollar has remained the favoured international currency.
Sarkozy repeated his call for a monetary system that relied less on the dollar.
"The world has become multi-polar, we need a multi-monetary system," he said. (Reporting by Anna Willard and Sophie Taylor; editing by Stephen Nisbet)

Court Backs War Powers Over Rights of Detainees 06 Jan 2010 A federal appeals court panel on Tuesday strongly backed the powers of the government to hold Guantánamo detainees prisoners and other noncitizens suspected of committing terrorist acts. In a sweeping opinion, a three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit found that the presidential war power to detain those suspected of terrorism is not limited even by international law of war. The decision, if it is not reversed by the Supreme Court, could apply to all cases involving detainees at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, since all of those cases are heard by the District of Columbia Circuit.
Obama Orders Air Marshal Surge by Feb. 1: 'Race Against Time' --U.S. Fears More Airplane Bombers Are in the Terrorist Pipeline 06 Jan 2010 President Barack Obama has ordered a "surge" of federal air marshals to be in place by Feb.1 in what officials said was a "race against time," with other suicide bombers believed to be in the terrorist pipeline, although there is no specific imminent threat, federal officials told ABC News. Under a preliminary plan, the officials said the already existing federal air marshal force of more than 3,200 personnel would be deployed almost exclusively to overseas flights flown by U.S. carriers. Domestic high-risk flights will be covered by agents from other federal law enforcement agencies who were trained as air marshals in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

'When discussing the new threshold, officials suggested it is more an art than science.' U.S. lowers threshold for inclusion on no-fly lists 06 Jan 2010 The U.S. government has lowered the threshold for information deemed important enough to put suspicious individuals on a watch list or no-fly list, or have their visa revoked, senior State Department officials tell CNN. The government overhauled criteria it uses for putting possible terrorists on such lists as a result of the failed Christmas Day attack, officials said.
CIA suicide bomber 'worked with allies of Osama bin Laden' 07 Jan 2010 They believe that the Haqqani network, which controls the area around Khost where the bombing occurred on Dec 30, authorised if not aided the Jordanian double agent who carried out the deadliest attack on the US spy agency for 30 years. For reasons that have not been made clear, the bomber was not subjected to even a rudimentary security check, and detonated powerful explosives soon after the meeting started, according to officials who asked to remain anonymous.

But House Democrats have resisted the idea, which is also strongly opposed by many organized labor groups -- an important part of the party’s base -- because the tax may hit a number of more generous union-sponsored health plans. The Senate proposal would impose a 40 percent excise tax on the cost of individual insurance policies above $8,500 and on family policies above $23,000, with higher thresholds for retirees and employees in high-risk fields like police officers.

Previous lead stories: Appeals court ruling limits Guantanamo detainees' rights, gives president wide detention power 05 Jan 2010 A federal appeals court ruling Tuesday could make it harder for Guantanamo detainees prisoners to challenge their confinement and endorsed the government's broad power to hold people seized in the fight against al-Qaida and the Taliban. A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit upheld the continued detention of a former cook for Taliban forces who said he never fired a shot in battle. Ghaleb Nassar Al Bihani, a citizen of Yemen who was captured in Afghanistan, has been held at the U.S. naval base in Cuba since 2002.
Return of Yemeni detainees at Guantanamo Bay is suspended 05 Jan 2010 The Obama administration said Tuesday that it is suspending the repatriation of prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay to Yemen, where a deteriorating security situation driven by a branch of al-Qaeda has stoked fears that detainees could join -- or rejoin -- the terrorist organization if released. The decision means that at least 30 Yemenis who were cleared for release by a Justice Department-led inter-agency review could face many more months in detention.

The Great Vampire Squid
For years, it was hard for many of us to fathom the psychopathic nature of our financial elites, or to expand the meaning of Matt Tabbi’s marvelous description of Goldman Sachs, the great vampire squid. Squid seems a fitting name for the financial cartel that drives what I have traditionally called the Tapeworm.
There were some who saw the danger immediately and tried to warn us, like Sir James Goldsmith. There were some, like myself, who tried to prevent the housing bubble and find alternatives to investing our life savings in it.
While those efforts did not stop the squid, they certainly made it clear that the squid take down of the planet was, indeed, part of a plan. That’s all documented now.
The Squid Shifts the Money
I often tell the story of my meeting with a group of pension fund leaders in 1997 in which the President of the CalPERs pension fund— the largest in the country—said, “You don’t understand. It’s too late. They have given up on the country. They are moving all the money out in the fall (of 1997). They are moving it to Asia.”
Sure enough, in the fall of 1997 trillions of dollars began to shift out of North America and into the emerging markets, including Asia and China. This included over $4 trillion that went missing from the US government, which I have referred to for years as “the missing money.”

Rahm Emanuel, mayor of Chicago?
Rahm Emanuel, mayor of Chicago?
That's enough to freeze the bowels of every voter in the land.
"Emanuel, the most political animal in this town ... is said to have told people that the ( White House) chief of staff role is an 18-month job and that he is considering a run for mayor of Chicago," wrote columnist Sally Quinn in the Washington Post on Tuesday.
With Hollywood continuing to suck up to the Obama administration, imagine the benefits of a Rahmsian mayoral campaign. HBO's "Entourage" could film here. The lead character, a charismatic Hollywood agent named Ari, is based on Rahm's brother, Ari.
Just think of the scenes at Cafe Bionda and Tavern on Rush, and the parts for Rahm's Chicago buddies, the entourage he'll need to run things if he's mayor. State Sen. Jimmy DeLeo (D-How You Doin?) could play Turtle and handle the parties. Corrupt former city water boss Donald Tomczak, who'll be released from federal prison this year, would thrill "Entourage" fans in the role of Donny Drama.
The White House could have thrown cold water on the idea. Instead, a White House source told the Tribune that "Rahm is 100 percent focused on the job at hand -- serving President Obama as his chief of staff."
From such non-denial denials, a demonic campaign may yet be hatched. If so, I might get down on my hands and knees and beg Mayor Richard Daley to stay. This would frighten the mayor and quite possibly unhinge him -- permanently.
So I called a mayoral source. "It's news to us," said the source. "The mayor has no intention of not being mayor."
Whew. If the prospect of a Rahm mayoral campaign is frightening, just think if Daley retired and played the geezer, an old man with trousers high, bragging about how he did everything he pleased and nobody could do anything about it.
Of course, he'd want to show up at his old haunts. That's when every politician he terrified over the years would line up to insult him. Don't even mention the cops and firefighters. Daley couldn't handle that kind of retirement.
So if Daley's not the mayor, it means either he's passed on or he's taking a long vacation on some exotic beach, drinking gin and tonics, watching "Entourage" DVDs.
The Washington Post is an esteemed newspaper. But the editors eat in Washington. They don't eat in Chicago. Yes, papers from Washington and New York periodically dispatch their foreign correspondents to our gritty Midwestern precincts to chronicle our quaint, earthy ways. But they never quite get it.
Just one year ago, Obama was in his first miracle phase, feeding the multitudes with two fish sandwiches and five hot dog buns. He was applauded as a reformer, even while putting Chicago City Hall guys in charge of the world.
Later, a few journalists were annoyed at Obama's penchant for meekly bowing down before measly foreign kings and emperors. But bowing meekly is what every young Illinois state senator does when summoned to the mayor's office in Chicago.
When the president installed Rahm as his chief of staff, the Washington media were turgid with respect, praising Rahm as a shrewd political alley fighter, a maestro of profanity, a former ballet dancer tough enough to send a dead fish to an enemy, just like a Hollywood gangster.
Naturally, the national media marveled that Obama selected a Clinton guy, Emanuel, to run things.
But Rahm is no Clinton guy. He's a Daley guy.
And if folks in Washington weren't so besotted with all that primo Hopium they've been smoking, they'd have understood this.
And, legend has it that Rahm sprouted fully formed from the navel of mayoral brother Billy Daley. Rich even assisted at the birth, and according to the dusty hieroglyphs, is said to have shrieked:
"Push, Billy! Push! Billy, I can see the head! Don't give up! Push!"
The Washington establishment also ignores how Rahm got elected to Congress in 2002 from Illinois' 5th District. The district's Democratic state central committeeman, DeLeo, had something to do with it. So did all those illegal City Hall patronage workers swarming the precincts, led by Donny Drama, currently in federal stir for the nasty habit of taking bribes.
Yet as if by tacit agreement, Rahm's Chicago back story doesn't make national news. But neither did the mayor's reaction when Rahm was made chief of staff of the Chicago Way.
"It's a gain," Daley said last year. "It's a real gain, gain, gain."
Unless it's a fish. A real fish, fish, fish.
And it's really cold.
