U.S., NATO Expand Afghan War To Horn Of Africa And Indian Ocean

Global Research, January 8, 2010
In parallel with the escalation of the war in South Asia - counterinsurgency operations in Afghanistan and drone missile attacks in Pakistan - the United States and its NATO allies have laid the groundwork for increased naval, air and ground operations in the Horn of Africa and the Gulf of Aden.

During the past month the U.S. has carried out deadly military strikes in Yemen: Bombing raids in the north and cruise missile attacks in the south of the nation. Washington has been accused of killing scores of civilians in the attacks in both parts of the country, executed before the December 25 Northwest Airlines incident that has been used to justify the earlier U.S. actions ex post facto. And, ominously, that has been exploited to pound a steady drumbeat of demands for expanded and even more direct military intervention.

The Pentagon's publicly disclosed military and security program for Yemen grew from $4.6 million in 2006 to $67 million last year. "That figure does not include covert, classified assistance that the United States has provided." [1]

In addition, "Under a new classified cooperation agreement, the U.S. would be able to fly cruise missiles, fighter jets or unmanned armed drones against targets in the country, but would remain publicly silent on its role in the airstrikes." [2]

On January 1 General David Petraeus, the chief of the Pentagon's Central Command, in charge of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as operations in Yemen and Pakistan, was in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad and said of deepening military involvement in Yemen, "We have, it's well known, about $70 million in security assistance last year. That will more than double this coming year." [3]

The following day Petraeus was in the capital of Yemen where he met with the country's president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, to discuss "continued U.S. support in rooting out the terrorist cells." [4]

White House counterterrorism adviser (Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism) John Brennan briefed President Barack Obama on Petraeus' visit to Washington's new war theater and afterward stated "We have made Yemen a priority over the course of this year, and this is the latest in that effort." [5]

The alleged terrorist cells in question are identified by U.S. and other Western governments as being affiliated with al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). However, on January 4 CNN reported that "A senior U.S. official cited a rebellion by Huti [Houthi] tribes in the north, and secessionist activity in the southern tribal areas" as of concern to Washington. [6]

The Houthis' confessional background is Shi'a and not Sunni Islam and the opposition forces in the south are led by the Yemeni Socialist Party, so attempts to link either with al-Qaeda are inaccurate, self-serving and dishonest.

Why Just About Everything You Hear About California's Water Crisis Is Wrong, Wrong, Wrong

January 8, 2010.

.... The power of simple fact-checking aside, why would California officials exaggerate -- if not outright lie -- about the drought? Well, the issue here is less about the drought itself and more about what a drought -- real or not -- can help achieve. If there is one thing 2009 revealed about California's "action hero" governor, it's that he is eagerly willing to serve as the front man for the sleaziest, most crooked business cartel in the state: a de facto water oligarchy made up of billionaire corporate farmers who run vast stretches of the state like their own personal fiefdoms, exploiting migrant workers for slave labor and soaking the taxpayers for billions of dollars in subsidies every year. And like all good businessmen, they aren't letting a good mini-crisis go to waste. Their objective is to whip up fears of a drought-related calamity to push through a "solution" they've been having wet dreams about for the past five decades: a multi-billion-dollar aqueduct the width of the Panama Canal that would give them near total control of more than half of California's water supplies....

(Washington, DC) -- A man allegedly pretending to be a Secret Service agent got past security at the Department of Health and Human Services and made it all the way to the sixth floor suite of offices that includes Secretary Kathleen Sebelius'.

Authorities arrested 46-year-old Frederick Nickerson on Tuesday and charged him in the incident, which happened last Saturday.

He'll be in court next week.

Security officials say Nickerson flashed what looked like a Secret Service badge as he walked by and said he needed to see Sebelius.

George Bernard Shaw Defends Hitler, Mass Murder

January 7, 2010

In this clip from the 2008 film “The Soviet Story”, we see that George Bernard Shaw, the celebrated progressive playwright defended Hitler, advocated killing those who can’t justify their existence and called for the development of lethal gas 10 years before the national socialists in Germany did exactly that.

George Bernard Shaw was one of the left’s most revered figures and the only person besides Al Gore to win both an Oscar and a Nobel prize.

Here, Fabian Socialist George Bernard Shaw Praises Italian Dictator Mussolini, immitating his ‘intimidating’ disposition, as well as his salute, while assuring viewers that the man is quite "amiable" and ‘kindly.’

'Grey goo' food laced with nanoparticles could swamp Britain

Last updated at 12:01 AM on 08th January 2010

Britain is on the brink of a massive expansion in foods containing controversial 'grey goo' nanoparticles, according to the former head of the Food Standards Agency.

Low-calorie chocolate and beer that doesn't go flat could be on sale within just five years, Lord Krebs said last night.

However, he and other peers believe there will be no requirement for the hi-tech products to be labelled as containing nanoparticles - microscopic compounds that can worm their way into the brain, liver and kidneys with unknown consequences.

But critics said the public have the right to know what they are putting into their bodies, and point out that new legislation will mean that cosmetics that contain nanoparticles will have to be clearly labelled.

Once derided by Prince Charles as 'grey goo', nanoparticles are tiny particles - 300 million would fit in a pinhead - with powerful properties that make them of interest to food companies. READ MORE

Campaign for Liberty | Yemen and the War of the Worlds

Published 01/07/10
Imagine if you will a country dominated by heavily armed tribesmen who are fiercely independent, frequently engaged in activities that most observers would regard as criminal, deeply conservative in religion and culture but further divided along sectarian lines, and ruled over by a highly corrupt government that is fighting both a civil war and an insurgency. Throw into the hopper extremely rugged trackless terrain, porous borders, and security forces incapable of exercising jurisdiction outside of the capital city and it is a virtual witches' brew. Many would immediately think of Afghanistan, where all of the above applies but the description equally fits Yemen, which also enjoys crushing poverty and high unemployment coupled with declining oil revenues and water supplies that can no longer sustain the population. Intelligence officers who are familiar with Yemen agree that coming to grips with the country's tribesmen in an attempt to root out al-Qaeda will make Afghanistan look like a walk in the park.

Yemen might well become the next American quagmire if the plans of the Obama Administration in its global war on terrorism that is now referred to as "overseas contingency operations" are implemented. As is frequently the case in the imperial capital city Washington, the Obamas see another Yemen. It is an opportunity for nation building, to strengthen institutions and the economy and support an ostensibly friendly government to suppress terrorism. But it doesn't take much to see what's wrong with that approach. The Yemenis themselves are fearful of the consequences of too tight an embrace by Washington and are already trying to distance themselves. They see gangsterism and tribalism as their greatest internal security threats, not terrorism, and the best estimates for the number of al-Qaeda adherents in the country number in the low hundreds. And many of those are believed to be the grapes of wrath fruit of Guantanamo Bay, where the United States successfully confined Yemenis who were completely innocent, radicalizing them and turning them into terrorism proselytizers upon their return home. The Mafia Is Running the Giant World Casino

January 7, 2010

A breathtakingly powerful Mafia is running away with the world as we knew it. We now have indiscriminate killings, torture and deprivation of civil rights. We have unbound aggression on countries that present an obstacle to U.S. global power. We have colossal negligence of the environment, we have an impending economic disaster (although band-aided over for the moment in order to protect Big Money, at the expense of the taxpayers) where the poor people are the first to suffer, although this fact is barely mentioned in the mainstream media. We have an erosion of the legal system and complete disregard for the Constitution.

The world-wide Mafia operates under the system of Neoliberalism, which means Free Trade that favors the rich countries, the corporatocracy (a coalition of government, banks, and corporations), financiers who do not see any further than multiplying their assets in a second with a stroke of the computer, and the arms industry that delivers the tools to empower this fundamentally corrupt system. The military, whose major function is to secure free access to gas, oil and other essential resources, is clearly also an important link in the project of world domination. NATO is just a U.S.-governed tool to keep Europe on its toes and do its bidding. Among the most powerful and predatory institutions founded by the rich nations, led by the United States, for reaching out to countries in financial distress are the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Trade Organization (WTO). Free trade pacts (NAFTA,CAFTA, FTAA)[1] and economic strangulation of the countries in need of help cause drastic financial crises in poverty-stricken nations.[2]

The Unites States is on its way to becoming a third-world country as far as the poor are concerned. In addition, the standard of living for the middle classes is deteriorating further and further. The richest country in the world has a catastrophic so-called health care system that is primarily intended to make huge profits for the private health industry (with negligent improvement in sight). Other crucial problems are the low-standard educational systems, decaying or non-existent infrastructure, a severe lack of public transportation the last point contributing to the overuse of carbon fuels in this country. There is also less and less financial support for social institutions, such as daycare centers, libraries, art centers, leisure and cultural activities.

US drone missiles slaughtered 700 Pakistani civilians since Obama took office

US drone missile attacks have claimed the lives of over 700 Pakistani civilians since Barack Obama took office a year ago, according to figures released this week by officials in Islamabad. The escalation of Washington's AfPak war, now in full swing, will mean the slaughter of thousands more men, women and children in 2010.

The grim death toll was announced in the Pakistani English-language daily Dawn Monday, just as news of the latest strike by a Hellfire missile made its way from an impoverished village near the Afghanistan border.

The missile strike left dead and buried in the rubble of their home a Pakistani teacher and his nine-year-old son. According to media accounts citing unnamed US intelligence officials, the teacher's home had been targeted for a Predator drone attack because of reports that militants had frequented the house.

Blackwater and the Khost Bombing: Is the CIA Deceiving Congress?

By Jeremy Scahill

January 6, 2010

A leading member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence has told The Nation that she will launch an investigation into why two Blackwater contractors were among the dead in the December 30 suicide bombing at the CIA station at Forward Operating Base Chapman in Khost, Afghanistan. "The Intelligence Committees and the public were led to believe that the CIA was phasing out its contracts with Blackwater and now we find out that there is this ongoing presence," said Illinois Democrat Jan Schakowsky, chair of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, in an interview. "Is the CIA once again deceiving us about the relationship with Blackwater?"

In December, the CIA announced that the agency had canceled its contract with Blackwater to work on the agency's drone bombing campaign in Afghanistan and Pakistan and said Director Leon Panetta ordered a review of all existing CIA contracts with Blackwater. "At this time, Blackwater is not involved in any CIA operations other than in a security or support role," CIA spokesman George Little said December 11.
