India is set to launch its first nuclear-powered submarine, becoming only the sixth country to domestically design and build such a vessel.
The submarine will be launched on July 26, at Visakhapatnam naval dockyard by the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's wife Gursharan Kaur, sources announced late on Thursday.
With the launch of this submarine, India will enter the exclusive club of designing and operating nuclear submarines joining the US, Russia, China, France and the UK.
Extensive sea trials will follow the launch of the vessel, designed to carry a miniature 80MW pressurized water reactor (PWR), Indian officials said.
"It will take a minimum of two years before this 6,000-ton advanced technology vessel can become fully operational," said an official on condition of anonymity, The Times of India reported.
