Focus on Haiti: Washington's Militarized TakeoverAfter Washington ousted President Jean-Betrand Aristide in February 2004, UN Blue Helmets (MINUSTAH) occupied Haiti as paramilitary enforcers. They still do, subordinate to around 20,000 US land and sea based troops, including Marines, Army 82nd Airborne paratroupers, Navy assault ships, and Coast Guard vessels offshore, a powerful force for indefinite occupation, severe repression, and ruthless exploitation for American interests - obstructing, not providing, humanitarian aid, and facilitating potentially hundreds of thousands of deaths from starvation, dehydration, disease, untreated wounds, trauma, and for some perhaps just giving up and expiring unnoticed, unreported, and uncared about by forces able to help. Poverty, misery, dictators, anarchy, Soviets, Mujaheedin, Intelligence Agencies, Taliban, Warlords, and now NATO, a time line, as lengthy as my age, 50 years, was before my eyes, I could hardly recall a moment when Afghanistan was smiling. DRONES "Every one of these dead non-combatants represents an alienated family, a new revenge feud, and more recruits for a militant movement that has grown exponentially even as drone strikes have increased." - David Kilcullen (Counterinsurgency Expert) Center for New American Security |
Report: U.S. Drone Goes Down Over Pakistan, Again. A U.S. drone reportedly crashed in Pakistan on Sunday. The Associated Press calls it “a rare mishap for a program Washington has increasingly relied on to kill Taliban and al-Qaida militants.” But that’s not quite right; American unmanned aircraft go down all the time. They’ve even gone down before in Pakistan. According to U.S. Air Force statistics, Predator and Reapers drones have suffered at least 85 “class A mishaps” — accidents which caused a million dollars’ worth of damage or more. Typically, 14 of these accidents takes place for every 100,000 hours a Predator flies. Drones are more glitch-prone than traditional planes. Communications with their remote pilots regularly cut out, forcing the robotic aircraft into automatic holding patterns. The unmanned planes don’t handle rain, snow, heavy clouds, or high winds particularly well; the Air Force typically grounds as many drone flights as it can if there’s bad weather. Landing the aircraft (especially under inclement conditions) is awfully tricky. That’s when almost all of the Reaper accidents have taken place. Obama Mulls Legality of ‘Taking Out’ US-Born Cleric
Can Obama ‘Take Out’ a Citizen Not Charged With Any Crimes?
By Jason Ditz | January 25, 2010
According to US intelligence officials, the Obama Administration has “missed” several opportunities to assassinate US-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki because lawyers are still unclear on the legality of killing him.
At issue is that Awlaki, a New Mexico-born Muslim cleric, is not charged with any crimes under US law and is only speculatively linked by the Obama Administration to terrorism through secret “intelligence reports.”
As a native-born citizen of the United States, assassinating him on the basis of secret evidence which is so shaky that officials haven’t felt comfortable issuing charges against him is a legal grey area, to say the least.
But despite this legal concern, officials had no problem in backing Yemeni air strikes which attempted to assassinate Awlaki just last month. US officials said Awlaki was ‘probably’ killed in those strikes, though it later turned out he wasn’t even present at the site of the attack.

DAVOS WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM
Davos security chief found dead: reports
Markus Reinhardt, the police commander in charge of security at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, was found dead in his hotel room from an apparent suicide, according to media reports Tuesday. Further details of the death were unavailable.
Nervous elite trudges up the mountain
At Davos this week the alarm bells and worries over a new economic dip will be sounded by the likes of George Soros, Joe Stiglitz and Nouriel Roubini, while the Obama Administration will be represented by veteran Davos schmoozer Larry Summers, with a likely co-star in Barney Frank.
King Abdullah and Queen Rania of Jordan will be ubiquitous, the most articulate and charming power couple on the circuit. Other star performers will include Nicolas Sarkozy of France, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil, David Cameron -- the man most likely to take over as prime minister of Britain this May -- plus the usual assortment of veteran talkers from Bill Clinton to Bill Gates.
And set against this will be the real story that only some of the traditional media will highlight: the emergence of China, India, and Southeast Asia as the real engines of global recovery in 2010, and the growing importance of the economies that form a new Silk Road of GDP growth and prosperity.

The savings would be small at first, perhaps $10 billion to $15 billion, one official said. But over the coming decade, savings would add up to $250 billion.

Egypt's Internet Crackdown
In the case of Egypt, the familiar dictum that all that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing is far from sufficient.Evil triumphs in Cairo because supposedly good men in the West openly and unapologetically fund and arm it. America has supplied Egypt with approximately $50 billion of aid (primarily military) since Hosni Mubarak came to power three decades ago. Stability was supposedly bought at the price of liberty—a fool's bargain. Instead, Egypt remains impoverished, illiterate, autocratic, corrupt, and repressive, not exactly the conditions for lasting stability or peace.
Ah, yes, good old Hosni Mubarak; a consummate thug, but nonetheless our thug.
This is another grand example of the US government being pathologically incapable of learning the lessons of history.
When peaceful revolution is impossible, violent revolution is inevitable.
There will be a breaking point for the Egyptian people, and my guess is, that breaking point will not be too long in coming, no matter how repressive the current Egyptian government may be.

From whence we came First of all, how many children in the public schools are taught the reality of the founding of our nation? I can answer that with one word: none. Yellowstone Volcano Observatory Tectonic Plates Thought Responsible for Swarm of Yellowstone National Park The recent swarm of earthquakes noted at Yellowstone National Park were most likely caused by shifts in tectonic plates, not pressures in the magma chamber beneath the park, according to geologists. According to the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, University of Utah semismograph stations in the park noted a pair of earthquakes Sunday evening that measured magnitudes of 3.0 and 3.1. The first event of magnitude 3.0 occurred at 11:09 p.m. and was followed by a magnitude 3.1 event at 11:21 p.m., the observatory reported. Both shocks were located around 9 miles southeast of West Yellowstone, Montana, and about 10 miles northwest of Old Faithful. Typically, events of this magnitude are felt in and around the park, but there were no reports of these particular events being felt, the observatory noted. These two earthquakes are part of an ongoing swarm in Yellowstone that began January 17, 2010. The largest earthquake in the swarm as of 9 a.m. MST, January 25, was a magnitude 3.8, the observatory reported. There have been 1,271 located earthquakes in the swarm of magnitude 0.5 to 3.8. This includes 11 events of magnitude larger than 3, with 97 events of magnitude 2 to 3, and 1,163 events of magnitude less than 2. There have been multiple personal reports of ground shaking from observers inside the park and in surrounding areas for some of the larger events. Earthquake swarms are relatively common in Yellowstone. The swarm events are likely the result of slip on pre-existing faults and are called tectonic earthquakes and are not thought to be caused by underground movement of magma, the observatory staff noted. Currently, there is no indication of premonitory volcanic or hydrothermal activity, but ongoing observations and analyses will continue to evaluate these different sources. Seismic information on the earthquake can be viewed at the University of Utah Seismograph Stations: http://www.seis.utah.edu/. Seismograph recordings from stations of the Yellowstone seismograph network can be viewed online at: http://quake.utah.edu/helicorder/yell_webi.htm.
