Los Angeles Times - 26 minutes ago February 4, 2010 | 1:25 pm A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California on Thursday, near the Humboldt County area hit by last month's 6.5 temblor. The quake hit at about 12:20 p.m. approximately 50 miles northwest of Eureka. Officials were checking for structural damage, including examining buildings that were damaged in the Jan. 9 quake. The January quake caused more than $30 million in damage and resulted in the planned demolition of at least one building. On Twitter, some residents said they felt a sharp jolt, but they added that it did not feel as strong as the January quake. [Updated at 1:40 p.m.: The Eureka Times-Standard reported Thursday's quake occurred in roughly the same area as last month's quake and appears to be an aftershock. It quoted emergency personnel as saying they doubted there would be major damage from this quake.] Magnitude 6 Quake Hits Off Northern California Coast BusinessWeek Blizzard warnings in effect for the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic this weekend Appears that there may even be "near-blizzard conditions" starting on Friday in Washington D.C. and Baltimore, while there will be a full-on blizzard in New Jersey and Delaware. Corporate Empire vs. the Free Market:Reports From an ex-Corporate Insider Canada Free Press Wednesday, February 3, 2010 Given the recent Supreme Court decision (Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission) to remove limits on corporate spending in federal elections, the time has come to reconsider the entrenched American belief about corporations before they kill off the free market for good. The gap between belief and reality on this issue is profound. In the destructive left vs. right paradigm of American politics, the right loudly proclaims the benevolence of corporations fueling freedom’s cause. I subscribed to this ideology as well—that is until I actually experienced corporate reality. The right seems to equate corporations with the fundamental essence of America and the ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Thomas Jefferson would be stunned. READ MORE |

Breakdown Of The Gold Market Commodities / Gold and Silver 2010 Feb 03, 2010 - 05:07 PM By: Jim Willie CB A great disconnect exists in the gold market between the exchange futures contract price (the paper price) and the gold bullion paid price for transactions (the physical price). The differential in price is growing wider, enough to place tremendous pressure on the gold market itself. Look not to the gold premium paid for purchases, but to high volume purchases in the tens of million$. In mid-December, almost every demand for gold contract delivery was matched by a cash delivery, complete with 25% bonus premium offered. The officials even produced a new ledger item called 'Cash For Delivery' that was necessary to balance their badgered books. It prompted little attention. Some call it a basic bribe. Others call it a technical default. READ MORE: http://www.marketoracle.co.uk/Article16987.html |

Desperate to save police, fire and other city jobs, a divided Phoenix City Council on Tuesday approved a sales tax on grocery items that will generate tens of millions of dollars a year.
The 2 percent food tax will take effect April 1 and expire after five years, though Mayor Phil Gordon said the council has the option of reversing its decision after it hears from the public during 15 budget hearings planned for this month.

G7 to complain, shiver in Great White North
Weekend meeting to discuss China, Greece, maybe global warming
G7 officials are being dragged by their Canadian counterparts to a city near the Arctic Circle so they can experience Canada's tundra in February while they discuss such issues as Greece's debt, China's bubble, and the world's slow exit from its financial crisis.
Analysts paint a picture of a G7 still convalescing from the financial crisis. There are some signs of recovery, but jobs remain scarce and credit remains tight. At the same time, emerging economies like China, India and Brazil are roaring back and becoming the engines of growth for the global economy.
A senior U.S. official confirmed that China's currency and Greece's debt will be on the agenda, once officials settle in from dogsledding events and eating Arctic delicacies like seal meat.
The host of the meeting, Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, has pledged to make it more informal and intimate, and has said he wants to show off Canada's pristine northern country. As many as 500 members of the global financial community, including press and government officials, will join financial leaders such as U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Britain's Alistair Darling. The entire city reportedly only has 300 hotel rooms.
The finance ministers and central bankers will meet on Friday night and Saturday morning.
They will hold a joint press conference on Saturday afternoon. There will not be an official communiqué but there may be a chairman's statement, the U.S. official said.
Greece
Greece's plan to slash its deficit "will be touched upon," the official said.
"We are monitoring the situation closely. We support Greece's reform efforts," the official said.
Greece's budget deficit has risen above 12% of GDP, well above the euro-zone's ceiling of 3%.
Greece has announced a plan to slash its budget deficit over the next three years, but experts said its fixed-exchange rate will make the adjustment especially difficult.
The wealthier nations of the euro-zone may have to step in with a rescue package. Others believe the International Monetary Fund may eventually play a major role.
Domenico Lombardi, an expert on international economic relations at the Brookings Institute, said the Greek deficit will be "tricky" ground for the G7.
President Obama cuts border security budget
Examiner | While telling the American people that national security is a priority, President Obama submitted a 2011 budget proposal that includes cuts to U.S. border security. Dalai Lama to meet Obama at White House this month It’s very difficult to keep track of all of Barack Obama’s plans and initiatives as they assume a chimeric quality, keeping Americans wary and guarded, lest another attempt at a costly and intrusive program originates from the chastened, but unbowed Democrats. It’s clear that the American people are most concerned with the economy, and that message seems to have finally penerated the President’s tin cochlea and now appears to be working toward his brain. Recent pronouncements following the tectonic shift in the Senate indicate that the President is promising to focus on “job creation”. Only problem is he’s attempting to create jobs through more stimulus spending. Obama prays for civility in Washington WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama said Thursday he prays lawmakers can restore a "spirit of civility" to the nation's capital. Speaking at the annual National Prayer breakfast, Obama said divisions in Washington are nothing new, but "there is a sense that something is different now, that something is broken, that those of us in Washington aren't serving people as well as we should." HILLARY CLINTON U.S. Department of State |
Conyers Calls on Clinton to Demote USAID Director Feb 4 2010 FOXNews.com Fox has obtained a letter that Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) wrote to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton asking that she demote Rajiv Shah, the Director of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). It’s rare for a lawmaker to write to a cabinet secretary and demand specific action on a personnel matter. In the letter, Conyers says that he was “alarmed and chagrined” to learn that Shah did not bring any African American staff to a meeting of the Congressional Black Caucus on Wednesday to discuss Haiti. First elected in 1964, Conyers is the most-senior African American in Congress and the second-most senior House member. “This is so serious an error in judgment that it warrants his immediate demotion to a subordinate position at AID,” Conyers wrote, noting that there was “under-representation of minorities in key positions at the State Department.” Conyers also says he “looks forward to meeting” with Clinton to discuss Shah. Conyers previously raised issues about how the Obama Administration was handling the crisis in Haiti following last month’s devastating earthquake and suggested that USAID has no clear outline for assisting Haiti. |

Congressional hearing reveals US intelligence agencies shielded Flight 253 bomber
By Alex Lantier
3 February 2010
A January 27 hearing of the House Committee on Homeland Security established that US intelligence agencies stopped the State Department from revoking the US visa of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. The Nigerian student, whom US officials suspected of being affiliated with the Yemeni terrorist group Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, attempted to set off a bomb on Northwest Flight 253 into Detroit on Christmas Day. Revocation of Abdulmutallab’s visa would have prevented him from boarding the airplane.
The hearing was reported in a brief article posted January 27 on the web site of the Detroit News, headlined, “Terror Suspect Kept Visa to Avoid Tipping Off Larger Investigation.”
The revelation that US intelligence agencies made a deliberate decision to allow Abdulmutallab to board the commercial flight, without any special airport screening, has been buried in the media. As of this writing, nearly a week after the hearing, the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and Los Angeles Times have published no articles on the subject. Nor have the broadcast or cable media reported on it. READ MORE

FBI, CIA report on Chavez-FARC ties Columbia Reports Feb 4 2010 U.S. intelligence agencies presented a report Wednesday to the U.S. Senate claiming that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez provides "covert support" to Colombian guerrilla organization the FARC. The document states: "We assess Chavez is likely to maintain his decade-long ties to the FARC by providing them safehaven because of his ideological affinity to the group and his interest in influencing Colombian politics." The report also claims that Chavez's power in the region "may have reached its limit." According to U.S intelligence, the FARC's power is waning and "although [the group] is unlikely to make a sustained comeback, it will still be able to conduct small-scale guerrilla and terrorist attacks nationwide." Colombia and Venezuela have a long history of tensions, in part due to the long-held belief of the Colombian goverment that the leftist government in Caracas is supporting guerrillas in Colombia. Venezuela cut ties with Colombia after the Andean nation signed a military pact with the U.S. which allowed the North American country to use seven of its military bases. Chavez considers the pact a threat to national security and has made steps to block his country's $7 billion annual trade with Colombia, and tighten border security. Defense Secretary Cohen's 1997 Warning about Scalar EM Geotechnical Terrorism
“Others [terrorists] are engaging even in an eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves… So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations…It's real, and that's the reason why we have to intensify our [counterterrorism] efforts.”

DEPOPULATION |
Kissinger Genocide Report 1974 NSSM
You Are In the Way. It’s that simple.
US foreign policy became very clear in the December 10, 1974 National Security Study Memorandum, “NSSM 200, Implications of Worldwide Population Growth for U.S. Security and Overseas Interests” also called the Kissinger Document. In it, an explicit policy by which the US would promote rapid population decline in 13 countries was articulated. Kissinger’s now famous (and declassified) quote sums up the elaborate plan:
“Depopulation should be the highest priority of foreign policy towards the third world, because the US economy will require large and increasing amounts of minerals from abroad, especially from less developed countries.”

When specific groups control the drug trade, they also control where the drugs wind up.
It's interesting to note that under the watch of the Taliban, the cultivation of the opium poppy was almost completely eradicated.
Suddenly, after the invasion and occupation of Afghanistan, the cultivation and production of opium poppies soared.
To say that there cannot possibly be a connection between the occupation and soaring heroin production here is preposterous.
And for anyone screaming, "this can't be so!", please remember: elements of the US government has a sordid reputation for involvement in the drug trade, as happened in the "golden triangle" area of southeast Asia during the Viet Nam war, and with Iran Contra.
