Hazardous Hamming
A fellow who knows I follow the sport of ham radio sent in an interesting note about ham radio relief work in Haiti:
"George,
It seems that Haiti is getting worse. A group of Ham Operators from Radio Club Dominicano on Sunday tried to go to Haiti's capital to set up equipment to aid communications but had to leave because the area is so unsafe. One person in their party is dead after their convoy was fired upon. Everyone is now back in Santo Domingo. They did get some equipment up and running.
I have read that a prison or prisons has been compromised and all of the inmates have escaped after burning all of the prisons records showing their crimes. They have taken guns from the prison and now appear to be on the rampage on the streets. I guess they could also get them at a police station too if they collapsed and the officers were killed.
I also read where a medical hospital sent in by Israel have assisted a woman giving birth to a baby boy. The mother was so thrilled so decided to name him "ISRAEL". Pretty cool to say the least.
I found this out at http://www.ham.dmz.ro and Hampedia.net "
Might want to tune through 14.265 (USB) and maybe 7.265 (LSB) to see if there's any ham traffic coming out on HF...wouldn't expect much though, based on street level conditions which are grim.
COASTLINES - A RESOURCE STOLEN BY GLOBALIST CORPORATIONS Cruise ships still find a Haitian berth Sixty miles from Haiti's devastated earthquake zone, luxury liners dock at private beaches where passengers enjoy jetski rides, parasailing and rum cocktails delivered to their hammocks. The company recently spent $55m updating Labadee. It employs 230 Haitians and the firm estimates 300 more benefit from the market. The development has been regarded as a beacon of private investment in Haiti; Bill Clinton visited in October. Some Haitians have decried the leasing of the peninsula as effective privatisation of part of the republic's coastline. |
To Save Haiti, Fire Gen. “Brownie” Keen, Start Air Drops, Cancel the Debt, and Kick Out The IMF
Webster G. Tarpley

January 17, 2010
Just over five days or 120 hours after a major earthquake hit the area of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, it is increasingly clear that the US approach to organizing the delivery of emergency assistance and supplies is so ineffective that the general directing the distribution of emergency aid needs to be fired without further delay. The catastrophic blunder involved is the decision by the US military in the person of Gen. Ken Keen to insist on routing all external aid through a single substandard, inadequate, and partially destroyed landing field, the Toussaint L‘Ouverture airport. This airport has a single runway, and room to park only about half a dozen medium to long range aircraft. The result is that once six aircraft are parked in the unloading area, all incoming traffic must be waved off until one of the six planes has taken off again, as a colonel on the ground explained in a press conference broadcast on C-SPAN radio here this afternoon. The control tower, radar, and other facilities have been destroyed by the earthquake. Even once cargo has been offloaded, it has been tending to build up at the airport because the streets and roads leading from the airport towards the main population concentrations are blocked by collapsed buildings and other debris. The result is an agonizing slowness in delivering vital supplies upon which the immediate survival of up to 3 million Haitians now depends.
The Single Airport as Bottleneck
This single airport approach fulfills the textbook definitions of a logistical bottleneck and logistical nightmare. It was a fatal mistake to ever decide to make this single runway the only supply line for the stricken populations around the Haitian capital. The officer who is said to be running the US logistical effort on the ground is Lieutenant General P.K. “Ken” Keen, second in command of the US Southern Command. Interviewed today by Brit Hume on Fox News Sunday, General Keen stated: “ Well, we had a very good day yesterday, Brit. Paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne division who have only arrived within the last day or two delivered over 70,000 bottles of water and 130,000 rations.” General Keane was referring to Saturday, January 16, three days and 96 hours after the earthquake. This statement is comparable to the recent remark of Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano to the effect that, although an airplane had almost been blown up aloft, “The system worked.” General Keen, like Secretary Napolitano, appears incapable of recognizing defeat and failure when they are staring him in the face, and human lives have already been lost as a result of his incompetence. Gen. Keen is well on his way to becoming the new Brownie of the Haitian crisis, surpassing in ineptitude the infamous Bush FEMA director who received the accolade of “heckuva job, Brownie” at the height of the 2005 debacle.

FASCISM Gerald Celente | Fascism Is Coming To America The Subsidy That Won't DieThe big banks claim the government isn't helping them anymore. Not exactly. Check out this little-known subsidy. But the big American banks aren't nearly so independent as they would have us believe. JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and their peers are still benefitting hugely from significant post-crisis subsidy programs that boost their profits. I'm talking mostly about the Temporary Liquidity Guarantee Program (TLGP). This was a program started in the wake of the Lehman Bros. collapse to deal with the fact that banks were having a tough time raising short-term capital on decent terms. Under the TLGP, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., which is ultimately backed by the taxpayers, would guarantee debt in exchange for fees paid by the banks issuing debt. Bank Failures Begin Again January 18th, 2010 by Tom Johansmeyer After seeing the number of bank failures tick up to 140 last year, there’s some slight comfort in seeing the annual total only reach four. The feeling of relief disappears, of course, when you realize that we’re only two weeks into 2010. The effects of the late 2008 financial crisis are still with us, as three small banks learned this week — in Illinois, Minnesota and Utah. As expected, the 2009 trend continues. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s takeover of the banks follows the closure of the much larger Horizon Bank in Bellingham, Wash., the week before. |

Carlos Slim in favor of dumping the New York Time's policy of free online access
Carlos Slim and former U.S. President William J. Clinton, in conversation at the 2004 International Achievement Summit in Chicago.
January 18, 2010
Billionaire Carlos Slim seems to be using his financial might to help the New York Times stop dragging its feet on whether to start charging readers for online access to the Times.
The Mexican mega-investor -- the Times' largest individual shareholder -- set off a loud buzz all weekend after proclaiming on TV he's in favor of dumping the newspaper's policy of free online access because the bold act "will be successful at the end of the day."
The surprise public debut of Slim's investor role at the paper came Friday in a CNBC interview -- and by early yesterday, leaks from Times sources said the company was at last ready to make its long-awaited decision about seeking online revenue -- possibly by early springtime.
Paying for online content has been a touchy subject for the Sulzberger family, which controls the Times. Many newspapers are studying ways to adopt a pay model similar to the one used successfully for years by The Wall Street Journal. Under that system, non-subscribers get a headline and a tease, while subscribers get the story, as well as additional features and graphics.
Media reports have indicated that News Corp, parent to Fox News and Dow Jones & Co., among others, may be thinking of buying a stake in Alwaleed's Rotana Media Group, which includes a number of satellite channels that air in the Middle East.
1-17-2008: The Rise of Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWFs)
U.S. President George W. Bush during a lighter moment on his Middle Eastern tour with Saudi Prince Salman bin Abdul Aziz
Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal topped up his holding in U.S. banking giant Citigroup, as part of a $12.5 billion cash injection from a group of backers, including the Kuwait Investment Authority.
The same day, the Kuwait Investment Authority also participated in a $6.6 billion boost for U.S. investment bank Merrill Lynch.
They're the latest in a long line of substantial investments emanating from the Middle East; most made by Sovereign Wealth Funds spending the proceeds of the oil boom.
What are they?
Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWFs) are not a new phenomenon -- the first was founded in 1953 -- but recently, they've become much more active. In the past six months, in the financial sector alone, they've taken stakes in Morgan Stanley, UBS and Bear Stearns, as well as Citigroup and Merrill Lynch.
How much are they worth?
Figures vary as many of the larger funds don't divulge valuations. Morgan Stanley says, combined, they could be worth as much as $2.5 trillion. Standard Chartered says the total assets managed in SWFs correspond to around 12 percent of the market capitalization of the NYSE, or about 42 percent of total stocks on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
The "Super Seven"
1. Abu Dhabi
2. Singapore -- GIC
3. Norway
4. Kuwait
5. China
6. Singapore -- Temasek
7. Russia
(Source: Standard Chartered)
Who owns them?
Sovereign Wealth Funds aren't solely the preserve of Middle Eastern royalty. Norway's Government Pension Fund is one of the biggest SWFs in the world, worth an estimated $322 billion. Singapore, China and Russia also have sizeable funds. In
fact, they're all featured Standard Chartered's "Super Seven"; funds with more than $100 billion in assets.
In recent years, more countries have jumped aboard the SWF wagon. Among the most recent are Chile's Economic and Social Stabilization Fund (2006) and Venezuela's National Development Fund (2005).
Where does the money come from?
The biggest single source of funding for the largest SWFs is oil and other commodities. As oil prices swelled, so too did government coffers. Excess foreign reserves are also a source of funding. And of course, as the value of their assets grows, SWFs too will have more money at their disposal. In ten year's time, Standard Chartered estimates they'll be worth $13.4 trillion. Morgan Stanley forecasts a more optimistic $17.5 trillion.
Who are the big spenders?
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority is the world's biggest SWF, in dollar value, as well as a proportion of the Emirate's GDP. Estimates of its size vary widely, from $250 billion to $1 trillion. Standard Chartered puts it about half-way at $625 billion. One of its most recent purchases was a $7.5 billion stake in Citigroup last November.
Sounds great, what's the catch?
Many commentators view the rise of SWFs as a positive force in the world market. For example, while the prospect of a recession in the U.S. has sent other investors running for cover, they've been willing and able to pump vast sums of money into the U.S. banking sector. However, there's some trepidation about their lack of transparency; many don't provide details of their size, investment returns or asset allocation.
The secrecy has stoked concerns about their investment motives. Some countries are worried that SWFs will give other governments undue influence over important local companies. The challenge is to ease concerns about "strategic investments," while not setting up too many barriers to foreign money.

China to offer more money to report online smut
China has run a highly publicised campaign against what officials said were banned smutty and lewd pictures overwhelming the country’s Internet and threatening the emotional health of children.
In the period from Dec. 4 to Jan. 15, the National Anti-Pornography and Anti-Illegal Publications Office, along with the publishing watchdog, received more than 90,000 reports about base or lewd websites, Xinhua news agency said.
A total of 215 people had been given a total of 224,000 yuan in reward money for reporting the sites, with rewards ranging from 1,000 yuan to 10,000 yuan, Xinhua added.
Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez won't spare a kind word for video games, calling them 'poison' and accusing them of being proxies for capitalist warmongering. According to AFP, the outspoken US critic who once notoriously referred to George W. Bush as "the devil", used his weekly radio-TV show 'Alo Presidente' to put a match to Sony's PlayStation games brand.
Those games they call 'PlayStation' are poison. Some games teach you to kill. They once put my face on a game, 'you've got to find Chavez to kill him'.
I'm not sure which game or user mod he's referring to, assuming there actually is one. Perhaps he means Mercenaries 2: World in Flames? You know, Pandemic's "explosive open-world action game," in which "a power-hungry tyrant messes with Venezuela's oil supply, sparking an invasion that turns the country into a war zone"? Pandemic denied the game was meant as a political statement (or an attempt to drum up support for a US invasion of Venezuela) but the developer admitted wanting "to have a rip from the headlines."
Chavez went on in his address to link Western games to slick propaganda vehicles, implying that scenarios in which players "bomb cities or just throw bombs" exist to incite violence against countries like Venezuela so that capitalist countries can "later sell weapons" to the country's opponents.
Games, said Chavez, "promote the need for cigarettes, drugs and alcohol," adding "That's capitalism, the road to hell."
Not all games are bad, however, according to Chavez, who said his country ought to be making "educational games" and designing "little indigenous dolls" to replace dolls "like Barbie, that have nothing to do with our culture."
It's apparently not the first time Chavez has laid into the games industry. AFP reports that Chavez once slammed Nintendo for promoting "selfishness, individualism and violence."
Last October, Venezuela passed a law making the import and sale of toy weapons and violent video games illegal, punishable by between three and five years in jail. The law reportedly goes into effect at the end of this month.

Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) UFO Database From George Ure's UrbanSurvival.com this morning: C2C Going Mainstream, 2 I think I've mentioned at least a couple of times about national late-night/overnight radio show Coast to Coast AM becoming the new 'mainstream' as younger people catch on to all is not-as-it-appears here in the checkbook republic. Two things caught my ear during last nights show hosted by George Knapp: One is that the Washington Times is now advertising email-delivery of the online version of their newspaper. Thought that was pretty impressive that someone is waking up to C2C's new role as a mainstream leader - not follower The other thing was the interview with Janis Sharp, mom of Gary McKinnon who you may remember is due in court this coming week to face extradition to the US on charges of doing a billion dollars worth of damage in what's called the 'biggest hacking operation in US military history." Except for one thing: McKinnon by all civilian accounts is not a terrorist but what he seems to have uncovered is something even scarier than terrorism: The truth about the US's secret off-budget space program including all kinds of info that the government doesn't want out. Far out as this may sound, one of George Knapp's call-in guests (didn't catch his name or website but if you did pass it along) was a former NASA worker who was 'up there' in the space program and who apparently has a website that 'outs' more about the "Secret Space Program" including the purported involvement of 8 & 9-foot tall 'giants' which are somehow involved in this secret/unauthorized program. Knapp - like CD2C's main host George Noory - is a great interviewer - and he may have this fellow on the show in the future but here's the main series of dots to connect: Six years ago Gary McKinnon apparently found information that caused the US demanding his extradition to the USA so we can lock him up for 70+ years and since he's now 42, that would be tantamount to a die-in-jail move. And - at the same time - we're hearing persistent reports a 'secret space program - and I assume you've seen the YouTube videos about purported secret "Starfleet" operations that are ongoing. |
