It has one of the most captivating historical sites in the area called Fort Dauphin known today as Fort-Liberté. This fort was built around 1731 under the command of Louis XV, king of France, and its ruins are the greatest evidences of its genius designers who chose the most strategic point to built it in order to fight off upcoming invaders. US military operations block relief efforts in Haiti
21 January 2010
The US military intervention in Haiti, after the January 12 earthquake that killed an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 people, continues to block arrival of critical supplies to the devastated country. Quake victims—including hundreds of thousands of wounded and an estimated three million Haitians made homeless—lack access to food, water, and life-saving medical equipment.

Obama administration interfering with Haiti aid flights. Doctors Without Borders makes charge.
Francoise Saulnier, head of the legal department of aid group Medicins sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders) said days had been lost because the main airport in Port-au-Prince, now under U.S. control, had been blocked by military traffic.
"We lost three days," she told Reuters Television in an interview. "And these three days have created a massive problem with infection, with gangrene, with amputations that are needed now, while we could have really spared this to those people."
The aid group, set up in 1971 by a group of journalists and doctors including France's current foreign minister, Bernard Kouchner, has complained that 5 aeroplanes carrying 85 tonnes of drugs and surgical supplies have been turned away from Port-au-Prince since Sunday night.
France's junior overseas cooperation minister, Alain Joyandet, protested to U.S. authorities at the weekend when a French plane carrying humanitarian aid was prevented from landing at the U.S.-controlled airport in the Haitian capital.
But President Nicolas Sarkozy's office has played down talk of a rift in the aid operation, saying Paris was very satisfied with the level of cooperation with U.S. authorities.
Thousands of U.S. troops have been deployed to secure supplies in Haiti days after the devastating quake on Jan. 12 which killed and injured tens of thousands of people and left hundreds of thousands dependent on emergency aid. [ID:nN1997937]
Saulnier said the situation for surgeons working on the ground was extremely difficult and relief teams had been forced to buy equipment on the local market to cut bones.
"So it's just apocalyptic at the moment with people in a very, very bad and deteriorating condition," she said, adding that there had been "real mismanagement of vital issues".
"You have the three first days to get people out of the buildings, then three others to give them medical and surgical attention and then all the rest, emergencies, food, shelter, water -- all this comes after," she said, speaking in English.
"And now everything has been mixed together and the urgent and vital attention to the people has been delayed (for) military logistics, which is useful but not on day three, not on day four, but maybe on day eight. This military logistic has really jammed the airport and led to this mismanagment.
From the Wilderness' Peak Oil Blog | I REALLY, REALLY DO NOT LIKE THIS STORY January 20, 2010 The official story is coming unravelled as quickly as 9-11 did, and in the same ways. Thank God I see that many more, experienced and well-funded independent press organizations are going after the story than there were just after 9-11. Yes, Haiti is being occupied. Yes, it is disaster capitalism. Yes, it reminds me of how the beaches in Sri Lanka devastated by the Tsunami were all instantly transformed from slums and shanties into pristine beaches -- subsequently sold to tourist developers exclusively. It starts with one nagging question. Like this: Why was a British naval flotilla pulled out of the waters around Haiti just days before the earthquake -- the first such gap in British naval coverage since the 1700s? Many are still asking why the aircraft carriers Hornet, Yorktown, Enterprise, Saratoga and Lexington had left Pearl Harbor just days before Dec 7, 1941. What does it prove? Nothing. That's why it leaves one unsettled. What does it prove that the U.S. military is denying access to Haiti of relief supplies and personnel from CARICOM? Caricom is a joint, multi-nation Caribbean relief effort with doctors, military, medicine and food. A news story today from Trinidad reported that Caricom personnel and supplies were being turned away. You see. It is not profitable to slow decline. And -- as with 9-11 -- you come to a point where you say, "It's walking like a duck... It just quacked..." There are many out there now who will know how to investigate and break this story. I don't need to I will stay focused on the things I'm doing now. I already have the map. Haiti, I'm afraid is the "Something Evil" which has come this way that I predicted. It is and will definitely be bigger than 9-11: More deaths, more property damage, a crisis in hemispheric politics, all just as a huge economic collapse was looming. -- I wrote my first-ever economic alert at From The Wilderness on Sept. 9, 2001. Don't throw out the potassium iodide yet. We have a long ways to go. |

As WND reported, FBI agents entered the capital law offices of Cozen O'Connor in the nation's capital Nov. 24 with a warrant to obtain 12,000 pages of documents gathered by P. David Gaubatz and his son Chris in a daring six-month undercover penetration of CAIR. The younger Gaubatz served as an unpaid intern for the group that was designated an unindicted terrorist co-conspirator in the trial of the Texas-based Holy Land Foundation, the largest terrorist-finance case in U.S. history. Chris Gaubatz says he was able to collect the documents after CAIR leaders asked interns to shred them.
The FBI's move suggests the federal government wants to see the papers as part of its interest in CAIR, its founders and their Hamas terrorist links.

TSA admits planting cocaine on young woman Source: Philly.com January 21, 2010 In the tense new world of air travel, we're stripped of shoes, told not to take too much shampoo on board, frowned on if we crack a smile. The last thing we expect is a joke from a Transportation Security Administration screener - particularly one this stupid. Rebecca Solomon is 22 and a student at the University of Michigan, and on Jan. 5 she was flying back to school after holiday break. She made sure she arrived at Philadelphia International Airport 90 minutes before takeoff, given the new regulations. She would be flying into Detroit on Northwest Airlines, the same city and carrier involved in the attempted bombing on Christmas, just 10 days before. She was tense. What happened to her lasted only 20 seconds, but she says they were the longest 20 seconds of her life. After pulling her laptop out of her carry-on bag, sliding the items through the scanning machines, and walking through a detector, she went to collect her things. A TSA worker was staring at her. He motioned her toward him. Then he pulled a small, clear plastic bag from her carry-on - the sort of baggie that a pair of earrings might come in. Inside the bag was fine, white powder. She remembers his words: "Where did you get it?" Two thoughts came to her in a jumble: A terrorist was using her to sneak bomb-detonating materials on the plane. Or a drug dealer had made her an unwitting mule, planting coke or some other trouble in her bag while she wasn't looking. She'd left her carry-on by her feet as she handed her license and boarding pass to a security agent at the beginning of the line. Answer truthfully, the TSA worker informed her, and everything will be OK. Solomon, 5-foot-3 and traveling alone, looked up at the man in the black shirt and fought back tears. Put yourself in her place and count out 20 seconds. Her heart pounded. She started to sweat. She panicked at having to explain something she couldn't. Now picture her expression as the TSA employee started to smile. Just kidding, he said. He waved the baggie. It was his. And so she collected her things, stunned, and the tears began to fall. Another passenger, a woman traveling to Colorado, consoled her as others who had witnessed the confrontation went about their business. Solomon and the woman walked to their gates, where each called for security and reported what had happened. A joke? You're not serious. Was he hitting on her? Was he flexing his muscle? Who at a time of heightened security and rattled nerves would play so cavalierly with a passenger's emotions? When someone is trying to blow planes out of the sky, what is a TSA employee doing with his eyes off the ball? When she complained to airport security, Solomon said, she was told the TSA worker had been training the staff to detect contraband. She was shocked that no one took him off the floor, she said. "It was such a violation," the Wynnewood native told me by phone. "I'd come early. I'd done everything right. And they were kidding about it." I ran her story past Ann Davis, regional TSA spokeswoman, who said she knew nothing to contradict the young traveler's account. Davis said privacy law prevents her from identifying the TSA employee. The law prevents her from disclosing what sort of discipline he might have received. "The TSA views this employee's behavior to be highly inappropriate and unprofessional," she wrote. "We can assure travelers this employee has been disciplined by TSA management at Philadelphia International Airport, and he has expressed remorse for his actions." Maybe he's been punished enough. That Solomon's father, Jeffrey, is a Center City litigator might mean this story isn't over. In the meantime, I think the TSA worker should spend time following passengers through the scanners, handing them their shoes. Maybe he could tie them, too. Update: Ann Davis, the TSA spokeswoman, said this afternoon that the worker is no longer employed by the agency as of today. She said privacy laws prevented her from saying if he was fired or left on his own. | ||||||||

Gaza Faces ‘Catastrophic’ Gas Shortage
Published Thursday, January 21, 2010
Fuel Union in Gaza says imminent shortage
could cause humanitarian disaster.
An impending shortage of cooking gas in the Gaza Strip is likely to cause a humanitarian disaster unless Israel allows more into the coastal enclave, say industry representatives.
With winter temperatures in Gaza dropping, petrol and gas vendors say Palestinians are getting only a third of the gas need for heating and cooking.
"The whole of the Gaza Strip requires 6,000 tons of cooking gas a month but now we’re only getting 2,000 tons," Mahmoud Shawwa, head of the Petrol and Gas Union in the Gaza Strip told The Media Line. "If we don’t get the adequate amounts, it will be catastrophic."
"We don’t know how we can distribute such a small amount," he said. "It will affect hospitals, bakeries and homes, especially elderly people. It will be a huge problem and people could die."
Israel restricted the passage of commodities into the Gaza Strip in 2006 after the hard-line Hamas, designated a terror organization in Israel and the United States, won the legislative elections. Israel imposed further restrictions after Hamas took over the Gaza Strip in a violent coup in June 2007.
Israel is allowing limited goods into Gaza and maintains it is doing all it can in order to prevent a humanitarian disaster there.
An IDF source said the army was aware that demand for gas regularly increases during the winter months and stressed that in the past the army has accommodated this requirement.

The Dangers of Genetically Engineered Sugar Beets Genetically modified foods hit store shelves in the 1990's and now just about any food that isn't certified organic, and contains milk, soy, cotton, canola, corn, squash, or papaya, contains genetically modified ingredients. Non-organic meat, fish and eggs are likely to be from animals raised on genetically engineered feed and could be the product of cloned animals. Genetically engineered sugar beets have been grown commercially in the US since 2008. That year about half of the crop was genetically engineered. The industry projected that about 90 percent of sugar beets would be genetically engineered by 2009. So, with 50% of the sugar supply from sugar beets, most of us have probably already been exposed to genetically engineered sugar. Monsanto wouldn't be able to accomplish this lightning-fast market saturation without the monopolistic power it gained by buying up seed companies. While industrial producers say they like the way the herbicide-resistant crop saves labor, they are wary of the power Monsanto has to restrict their choices and raise prices. While Monsanto clearly plans to make its GE sugar beets farmers' only option, experts suspect that the seed companies will have enough non-GMO seed for the 2010 planting if the court decides to follow up its ruling that GE sugar beets were approved illegally with a moratorium. If Monsanto's GE sugar beets end up winning out, the other concern farmers will have is whether the sugar beets will continue to be effective. Monsanto's supposedly Roundup-resistant sugar beets have been known to die in alarming numbers after having been sprayed with Roundup. Another danger is that the Roundup Ready sugar beets will transfer their resistance to wild relatives, spawning super weeds. In recent years, Europe's sugar production was devastated by the natural hybridization of the sea beet weed and the sugar beet. GE sugar beets are dangerous for people, pollinators and the environment. The risks of GE sugar beets are enhanced by the fact that they contaminate non-GMO crops. Just to name one example, GE sugar beet specklings were inexplicably found in potting soil mix sold to gardeners at a landscape supply business. GE sugar beet production significantly reduces the number of bees and butterflies in beet fields. GE sugar beets are designed to withstand strong doses of Monsanto's controversial broad spectrum Roundup herbicide. Studies indicate farmers planting Roundup Ready crops spray large amounts of the herbicide, contaminating both soil and water. Farmers planting GE sugar beets are told they may be able to apply the herbicide up to five times per year. Roundup, also known as glyphosate, is linked to cancer. Monsanto has successfully lobbied to increase human exposure its carcinogen. When it first commercialized its Roundup Ready crops, Monsanto applied for and was granted an increase in the level of herbicide residue allowed to remain on the crop. |

Jan. 21 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. faces longer power outages resulting from storms this year after utilities cut spending on maintenance by as much as 50 percent, according to Quanta Services Inc., the world’s largest builder of transmission lines. “Because they haven’t been doing maintenance for a few years, we will see longer outages and we will see more frequent outages as storm season approaches,” Chief Executive Officer John R. Colson said yesterday in an interview in Bloomberg’s Houston office. “It’s a frequent, very frequent occurrence that cities are affected by storms that shouldn’t really affect their distribution systems, and they are devastated and they are out of electricity for days and days.” Quanta, based in Houston, expects 2010 revenue from maintaining power lines and providing other electricity- distribution services to be little changed following a decline in 2009 because of the spending slowdown. FPL Group Inc., which was fined a record $25 million for a Florida power failure, halted some projects targeting improvements in reliability in the state after it got a lower- than-requested rate increase on Jan. 13 The Florida Public Service Commission also turned down a request for an increase in a storm-damage reserve from Raleigh, North Carolina-based Progress Energy Inc. earlier this month. The biggest blackout in North American history started when a power line, owned by Akron, Ohio-based utility FirstEnergy Corp., touched a tree limb in August 2003. U.S. and Canadian investigators blamed its spread on Carmel, Indiana-based Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator, the utility-owned non- profit that oversees that part of the power grid. Election Year Utilities cut their maintenance budgets over the last two or three years because they are uncertain whether they will recover the costs through a rate increase, according to Quanta’s Colson. Most of the regulators who decide on higher charges are appointed by governors who may face re-election this year and don’t want to see big rate increases before the vote, he said. “When spring storms come, with the wind and tornados and lighting, it will show on the systems,” he said. PRESS RELEASE FROM Yellowstone Volcano Observator PARTNER UNIVERSITY OF UTAH SEISMOGRAPH STATIONS Released: January 21, 2010 2:00PM MST This release is a continuation of information updates building upon our two previous press releases on the ongoing earthquake swarm on the west side of Yellowstone National Park. The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a pair of earthquakes of magnitude 3.7 and 3.8 occurred in the evening of January 20, 2010 in Yellowstone National Park. The first event of magnitude 3.7 occurred at 11:01 PM and was shortly followed by a magnitude 3.8 event at 11:16 PM. Both shocks were located around 9 miles to the southeast of West Yellowstone, MT and about 10 miles to the northwest of Old Faithful, WY. Both events were felt throughout the park and in surrounding communities in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. These two earthquakes are part of an ongoing swarm in Yellowstone National Park that began January 17, 2010 (1:00 PM MST). The largest earthquake in the swarm as of 12 PM, January 21, 2010, was a magnitude 3.8. There have been 901 located earthquakes in the swarm of magnitude 0.5 to 3.8. This includes 8 events of magnitude larger than 3, with 68 events of magnitude 2 to 3, and 825 events of magnitude less than 2. There have been multiple personal reports of ground shaking from observations inside the Park and in surrounding areas for some of the larger events (for felt reports, please visit http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/dyfi/). Earthquake swarms are relatively common in Yellowstone. The swarm earthquakes are likely the result of slip on pre-existing faults rather than underground movement of magma. Currently there is no indication of premonitory volcanic or hydrothermal activity, but ongoing observations and analyses will continue to evaluate these different sources. Lincoln Nebraska Live Traffic Cams Late-term abortion ban proposed by Nebraska Speaker of the Legislature WORLD-HERALD BUREAU January 21, 2010 LINCOLN - Late-term abortions would be banned in Nebraska, with a few exceptions, under a bill being introduced today by Speaker of the Legislature Mike Flood of Norfolk. Under Flood's proposal, abortions would become illegal after a fetus reaches 20 weeks. The only exceptions would be for medical emergencies or to save the life of the woman. The bill would put an end to announced plans by Dr. Leroy Carhart to provide late-term abortions at his Bellevue clinic. Carhart has said he wants to continue the work of Dr. George Tiller, who was shot and killed at his church in Wichita, Kan.. Flood said the U.S. Supreme Court has affirmed that states have a legitimate and substantial interest in preserving fetal life and promoting respect for human life at all stages of pregnancy. He said regulation is needed because of the tremendous pain that fetuses feel during a late-term abortion. Current Nebraska law bans abortions after a fetus reaches viability, but allows exceptions to preserve the life or health of the woman.

Researchers have proved that they are able to calculate in their heads whether the number of dots on a screen is increasing or decreasing.
They can then make a decision based on that finding, the experiment found.
Professor Andreas Nieder, who led the study at the University of Tubingen, Germany, believes the finding suggest that basic mathematics is "hard-wired into evolution".
"It is a primitive version of maths which we think has a survival advantage," he said. "If you are foraging then it is an advantage to choose a tree with more berries on it.
"Similarly it is important that a monkey knows the number of individuals in his or her social group and compares it with rival groups. To know whether to attack or retreat."
The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, involved training monkeys to recognise the number of dots on a screen flashed before them and compare them with subsequent sets of dots shown to them later.
If a red light was flashed before them later, then they had to pull a lever if there were more dots in the second image and if a blue circle flashed before them then the lever had to be pulled if it contained less dots.

The survey showed 26% of children thought bacon came from sheep, 29% thought oats grow on trees, while 17% of both children and adults under the age of 30 believed eggs were a core ingredient in bread. Peter Kendall, president of the National Farmers' Union, said: ''The results show how important it is to teach the adults of tomorrow about the food they eat. ''Everyone should know where primary foods like cereals are grown and the role they play as part of a healthy balanced diet. ''It is critical that children and adults alike understand more about their food, and the role British Farmers play in producing it.'' The survey, conducted on behalf of Home Grown Cereals Authority (HGCA) in the build up to Farmhouse Breakfast Week awareness campaign, concluded older generations knew ''much more'' about food. The majority of over 40s questioned knew where oats came from and that bread is made from flour, water and yeast. The survey was conducted online by OnePoll and YoungPoll during November, prompting almost 3,000 replies. |
UFO NEWS |
Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) UFO Database Incredible UFO allegedly filmed above Montevideo, Uruguay All News Web January 21, 2010 A reader has sent in the following UFO footage allegedly taken recently in Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay. We know little about the footage beyond this. Some UFO researchers who have viewed the footage have compared the object seen in it to the 'Pyramid' UFO recently seen above the Kremlin. Other researchers have insisted that it is almost certainly a computer generated hoax. Uruguay is definitely a UFO hot spot. Recently Uruguay's Air Force, who are entrusted with the task of investigating UFO reports, declassified and released all their previously top-secret files on this matter. The head of the Air Force's UFO commission Col. Ariel Sanchez noted that 'The UFO phenomenon exists and I must stress that the Air Force does not reject an extraterrestrial hypothesis based on our scientific analysis.' |
