The Nebraska Field Office of the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service says there were 47,200 farms and ranches at the end of 2009, less then 1 percent fewer than in 2008.

Operations with more than $100,000 in agricultural sales grew by 1,200, while the number with sales under $100,000 declined by 1,400. The USDA says the decline in smaller farms appears to be the result of higher commodity prices pushing existing farms into higher sales categories.

There were 45.6 million acres of land in Nebraska's farms and ranches, which was unchanged from the previous two years. The average size of an operation increased by 4 acres from 2008 to 966 acres.
