4.3 Magnitude quake hits Illinois this morning: An earthquake rattled northern Illinois early Wednesday, shaking an area about 50 miles west-northwest of Chicago, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The magnitude 4.3 quake hit just before 4 a.m., with an epicenter about 3 miles underground From Chicagobreakingnews.com:The quake was felt over a wide area, but there were no immediate reports of any damage At this point the fault activity that caused the quake was unclear, said Amy Vaughan, a geophysicist with the geological survey in Golden, Colo. Past quakes that have affected southern Illinois have been caused by the Wabash Valley or New Madrid seismic zones. The fault systems in northern Illinois are not as well understood as those in other regions where earthquakes are more common, and more investigation will be needed to determine the cause of this morning's temblor, Vaughan said. |

GORDON DUFF: THE 500,000 HIDDEN AMERICAN CASUALTIES OF THE FAILED “WAR ON TERROR” THE REVOLVING DOOR, A PERMANENT MILITARY “WELFARE STATE” With 500,000 “breadwinners” as disabled veterans, essentially half a million young families, ripped out of our economy, eating more money than national health care, Federal aid to education, food stamps and all American foreign aid combined, we are building a “military welfare state” inside the United States that will go on forever. Service in our current military, with constant deployments and lives interrupted for a decade has left the majority of those who served as ineffective soldiers, unemployable private citizens and, in many cases, permanent patients requiring a lifetime of physical or psychological treatment at a staggering cost. Attempts to curtail this problem, attempts that have cost hundreds of millions of dollars have been totally ineffective, in fact, our military is “melting down” at an increasingly rapid rate. Arsonists Blamed for Series of Texas Church Fires Published: February 9, 2010 NY Times HOUSTON — Arsonists are to blame for a series of fires that has left at least seven churches in ruins in small East Texas towns over the last five weeks, federal investigators said Tuesday. Federal agents have descended on East Texas to investigate recent fires at 10 churches. The fires have enraged and puzzled residents of Athens, Tyler and several smaller towns southeast of Dallas. “To people here it’s just an incomprehensible and unconscionable act,” said Mayor Randy Daniel of Athens, a town of 12,000 where three Baptist churches were burned down in the first two weeks of January. “It’s hard for them to take.” Dozens of federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have flooded the region, joining the Texas Rangers and local officials in a hunt for those responsible. Investigators have determined that at least seven of the fires were intentionally set, and they are investigating two more suspicious fires that broke out on Monday at churches in rural areas northwest of Tyler, officials said. The cause of another fire at a church on New Year’s Day could not be determined, they said. READ MORE Dallas AP A sheriff's dispatcher says fires have struck two more rural east Texas churches, just hours after investigators announced that a blaze last week marked the eighth arson against a house of worship in the state this year. A Smith County sheriff's dispatcher says fire struck a Baptist church near Tyler Monday night. Another hit a church about 3 miles away. The fires come the same day the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives announced a blaze that happened last week was the seventh east Texas church fire of 2010 to be deliberately set. Bureau agents in Houston say arson also caused a fire that destroyed the sanctuary of a central Texas church last month. There have been no reported injuries or arrests. Federal officials aren't saying if there's a connection. |
The Worst of the Pain NY Times - February 8, 2010 There is a great tendency in this country to refuse to see what is right in front of everybody’s eyes. While there is now, finally, a great deal of talk among the politicians and in the news media about unemployment, there is still almost a willful refusal to focus on just who is suffering the most from joblessness and underemployment. There has been talk about income inequality over the past several years, but what is happening now is catastrophic. The Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University in Boston divided American households into 10 groups based on annual household income. Then it analyzed labor conditions in each of the groups during the fourth quarter of 2009. The highest group, with household incomes of $150,000 or more, had an unemployment rate during that quarter of 3.2 percent. The next highest, with incomes of $100,000 to 149,999, had an unemployment rate of 4 percent. Contrast those figures with the unemployment rate of the lowest group, which had annual household incomes of $12,499 or less. The unemployment rate of that group during the fourth quarter of last year was a staggering 30.8 percent. That’s more than five points higher than the overall jobless rate at the height of the Depression. The next lowest group, with incomes of $12,500 to $20,000, had an unemployment rate of 19.1 percent. |

China's Debt Bomb
The Fed's "Exit Plan" Is Just Another Secret Gift To Wall Street The Fed is planning to detail its "exit plan" this week, the WSJ says. This exit plan is the means by which the Fed will gradually reverse the tremendous stimulus it is still pumping into the economy and financial system. As we've noted often over the past year, the Fed is in a bind. During the financial crisis, it bought hundreds of billions of dollars of real-estate loans and securities from banks to reduce mortgage rates and ease the pressure on bank balance sheets. This, in turn, pumped hundreds of billions of new dollars into the economy, which has helped the banks--and bankers--to make a killing over the past year. The question--the bind--is how the Fed can reverse this stimulus without killing the economy. And the initial answer seems to be...By giving the banks yet another gift at taxpayer expense. |

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, Don’t Think Things Through During the so-called McCarthy Era, Frank Chodorov – an Old Right individualist of the Jeffersonian school – offered a simple and effective solution to the problem presented by Communist infiltration of various federal agencies: "The only thing to do, if you want to rid the bureaucracy of Communists, is to abolish the bureaucracy." Despite – or perhaps because of – the fact that this prescription would have worked perfectly, it has been resisted by most conservatives, from that era until the present, who have seen nothing wrong with expanding the power and reach of government agencies as long as they were in the "right" hands. Statist conservatives rarely if ever advocate "the dismantling of the public trough at which these [Communist-aligned] bureaucrats feed," Chodorov pointed out, because "[t]hey too worship Power." .... |

COUNCIL OF GOVERNORS TAKES SHAPE By Chuck Baldwin Regular readers of this column will doubtless recall my recent column in which I reported on the new Council of Governors (CG) that President Barack Obama has created. See my column here. Well, Obama's CG is quickly beginning to take shape. According to the Associated Press (AP), "President Barack Obama has selected Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon to serve on an advisory council for defense and national security issues. "Nixon was one of 10 governors named Thursday [February 4, 2009] by Obama to the newly created Council of Governors." The 10 governors (and one of them is not even a State governor) selected by Obama are: *Governor James Douglas (R-Vermont) *Co-chair As I have already written, the creation of a CG should be of serious concern to all liberty loving Americans. That more of us are not as concerned as we should be can be traced to the mistaken belief that the American people have nothing to fear from an overreaching federal government. This is pure folly! As I have said many times, we have far more to fear from Washington, D.C., than from Iran, Iraq, North Korea, or any other potential terrorist state. It is Washington, D.C.,--and Washington, D.C., alone--that has the power, opportunity, and propensity to squash our freedom and sell us into tyranny. As Kurt Nimmo reports, "In other words, with the stroke of a pen, Obama significantly increased the ongoing effort to federalize the states and take control of the National Guard in violation of the now more or less moribund Posse Comitatus Act. Posse Comitatus was effectively annulled by the 2006 John Warner National Defense Authorization Act. The act provides the president with power to declare martial law under revisions to the Insurrection Act and take charge of United States National Guard troops without state governor authorization. Parts of the act were repealed in 2008." READ MORE New York Bills Would Mandate HPV Vaccines Without Parents' Consent |
