Nebraska Iowa County-by-county map, Missouri River flooding 2011 updates

Be prepared: Council Bluffs city officials warn residents to remain prepared to evacuate even though there is no immediate flood threat. Bags should be packed with clothing, important items and documents, and families should be set to leave home and head away from the river, city officials said. For flood information, including a complete evacuation checklist, visit the City of Council Bluffs online at councilbluffs-ia.gov.

Down came the rains: The Missouri River at Omaha slightly topped 36 feet Sunday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Officials said the rise in river height was due to rains in the Big and Little Sioux River basins. The weather service estimates that the water level will drop back down to 35 feet by Friday. Flood stage at Omaha is 29 feet.

Still sandbagging: Sandbagging operations were sparse because of the heat wave, but beginning Monday, strong-backed volunteers are again needed to fill sandbags. Sandbagging continues Monday though Friday from 8 a.m. to noon at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs. Participants must register by calling 712-325-4736. In Omaha, sandbagging will run Friday through Sunday, and generous helpers can get more information at the city's park website at ci.omaha.ne.us/parks.

Emergency repairs: In Kansas City, a levee needed emergency repairs starting at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Col. Tony Hoffman of the Kansas City District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said repairs continued until 10 p.m. Sunday night and will continue again Monday morning.
