SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — High water on the Missouri River through South Dakota is freeing logs and other debris that's speeding downriver and accumulating at the dams.
Operations project manager Dave Becker at Gavins Point Dam near Yankton says the debris is keeping the power plant there from running all three turbines.
He tells the Press & Dakotan newspaper that the corps is using a crane mounted on a barge to remove debris piles.
Corps spokesman John Bertino said the problem isn't as serious at the Oahe Dam north of Pierre. He told KCCR radio that the dam's intakes and outlets are deep enough that the debris flows underneath and doesn't cause problems for the powerhouse.
Parts of the river are closed to boating because the debris can be a hazard.
