OMAHA.COM | LATEST ON THE MISSOURI RIVER FLOODING - JULY 19, 2011

Presidential visit urged: The magnitude of flooding along the Missouri River warrants a presidential visit, Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann said Monday. Bachmann, a Minnesota congresswoman, and Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, took an aerial tour of flooding over parts of Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri and met with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials. Bachmann said corps officials estimated that flood damage to the levee and dam systems along the Missouri could reach $1 billion — and that doesn't include road damage. "The devastation is beyond what people can imagine," Bachmann said. "Surely this is worthy of a presidential visit to come see this level of devastation in western Iowa." Bachmann and King expressed concern during an Omaha press conference that the public already is forgetting the flooding. "If you're not here to see it ... you don't hear very much about it," King said.

Bluffs workshop: The Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce is inviting the city's business community to attend a flood preparedness workshop on Wednesday at 8 a.m. at the Holiday Inn at Ameristar. Those interested in attending are asked to email vcorbin@councilbluffsiowa.com or call 712-325-1000.

Flood hotline: The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency's state emergency operations center remains activated for flood response. The center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, with duty officers on call from 5 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. The NEMA flood hotline, 855-211-2453, is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. The agency also can be reached online at www.nema.ne.gov.

Flooded roads: Officials said some overpasses and ramps along Interstate 29 in western Iowa need to be inspected for flood damage before they're judged safe. Iowa Department of Transportation spokesman Jeff McQueen said the overpasses and ramps will have to be inspected and repairs made before motorists can use them for travel north or south along I-29 or to exit for driving northeast into Sidney or west to Nebraska City, across the Missouri River.
